Model Railway based on North East England large scale junction in the 1960's
This video is the first of a series re-creating the role of the Station Pilot. The Station Pilot could be seen at most large stations and whose role was to move stock around within the station limits. Duties included the dismantling and forming of trains at the beginning or end of their journeys.
This film shows how a parcels train might have been assembled.
There is a series of articles which give details of the design,building and operation of the railway in my blog. Read the articles in reverse order (first is at the bottom of the list)

Great stuff! I've watched this poor little gronk marshalling goods wagons and now passenger stock. It has left me very impressed with your layout. Look forward to seeing more.

Looks good but the ballast could be better, like actually around in the track and inbetween the sleepers, otherwise good

Hello, thank you for your comments. I always put some notes in the video to give an idea of what it is about. Maybe a bit more explanation would have been better here. The shunter is gathering the parcels vans which have come into the station on various trains to make up an express train.

Another great video Doug. One thing that has me intrigued is that I don't see any signals on the layout! I can only imagine how difficult it would be to wire in a signalling system. Best regards, Roger.

dougattrenholmebar Nowadays there are some railways which are not controlled by signals but by a mobile phone network.This is the case of the railway from Golmud to Lhasa across the Tibetan Plateau. There are mobile system antennas along the way and the info they get from the trains are the input to DCS in control room far away. Take in mind this is mostly a one track railway with only some sidings along the way. So you see, in a way, you have been a pioneer by not including signals in your layout, even though there were no mobile systems in the 60´s. Kind regards.

Love your layout. What platforms did you use?
@dougattrenholmebar
@dougattrenholmebar 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ethan, The platforms are made from wood topped with MDF, they are then covered with Meltcalfe's Tarmac sheets. The edging is the Paving Slabs, also from Meltcalfe's.

@@dougattrenholmebar Similar to mine on a couple of layouts. I've used 1.5 inch planed pine as the bases, only topped with Wills' York Stone sheets and fronted by their brick moulded platform faces and ramps. Have you done any scratch-building on this layout? - I've 'visited your videos before but can't remember asking. You've got an extensive fleet of locomotives and stock, I will say that. Any kit-built wagons or carriages?
