Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2012 | Hiking through the Cumbrian Lake District - England's green and pristine mountain playground - we'll admire idyllic lakes, discover misty waterfalls, tour a slate mine, and conquer stony summits. And we'll meet the locals - and their beloved dogs and sheep - everywhere. Then we play a little cricket, hike Hadrian's Wall, and get dazzled by Durham's Norman cathedral. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #lakedistrict

I have an obsession with England and its countryside. The fairytale-like cottages, churches, villages, cathedrals, countryside houses. This is what inspired so much English fairy tales and novels. I also love Bath and Oxford. York is another beauty. God bless England!

The reason I love the landscapes in Britain so much is because they are not high. There comes a point with mountains where the scale is too big for the human eye so you don't take it as much as smaller scenes. You feel swamped instead of connected. The Scottish Highlands etc are just right. I also love the variety. Scotland is wild and awe-inspiring and England is luscious and romantic. Each have a purpose.

Back in 2003, I spent 2 months in England and Scotland, and spent time in Keswick. I ate at the Dog and Gun Pub on a rainy and chilly Sunday evening, just in time for the traditional and very delicious roast beef dinner. There was a huge, roaring fireplace and big tables full of happy diners. For dessert, I tried the famous Kendle Mint Cake which was gloriously minty and refreshing. I then sauntered back to my B&B, where I slept like a log under a warm goose down comforter, serenaded by the many sheep who roam the streets at night. Keswick was great fun!

Apologies for That. I stand corrected! That whole trip was truly wonderful - areal eye opener for me. I also found the people to be reserved, yet friendly. Another point: I believe that the days of "bad" British food are over. I had nothing but spendid food there. I like to try traditional foods from whatever country I visit, and England did not disappoint me in any way. Great stuff!
@MeStevely
@MeStevely 7 жыл бұрын
E Mack Ah, the bad British food myth was started by American GIs stationed here in WW2. Britain was under severe rationing in those days, we found it difficult to import food as German U-boats decimated the Merchant fleet. We ate what we could get, not always the best quality. We were lucky to get anything. But there was an upside, the British population has never been healthier, before or since. We were forced to cut out the crap in our diets.
@elainebmack
@elainebmack 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I just watched a BBC series called "Wartime Farm" and how Britain coped with WWII food shortages, enlisting farmers to increase the production of food. I think of British food as fresh, wholesome, and very tasty and satisfying!

One of the attractions of Durham University, founded by the Church of England in 1832 to provide the people of northern England with access to higher education, is that the Norman Castle (and Palace of the Bishops) is now a Hall of Residence for students! Although it's perched very precariously on top of a steep hill overlooking the River Wear, into which it could slide at any moment!

While visiting northern England, do not miss out on a trip to York, it's truly inspiring and depending how much time you have the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Yorkshire coast around Whitby is well worth a shot. The only thing to remember is that although the Lake District has some of the most stunning scenery in northern Europe it is also the wettest part of England, so bring your waterproofs, having said that when I last went, it was warm ans sunny all week. Food wise try the Cumbrian sausage, the local lamb and also black pudding! Enjoy!

Britain is a pretty unspectacular place. It has no alpine peaks or broad rift valleys, no mighty gorges or thundering cataracts. It is built to really quite a modest scale. And yet with a few unassuming natural endowments, a great deal of time and an unfailing instinct for improvement, the makers of Britain created the most superlatively park-like landscapes, the most orderly cities, the handsomest provincial towns, the jauntiest seaside resorts, the stateliest homes, the most dreamily spired, cathedral-rich, castle-strewn, abbey-bedecked, folly-scattered, green-wooded, winding-laned, sheep-dotted, plumply-hedgerowed, well-tended, sublimely decorated 50,318 square miles the world has ever known - almost none of it undertaken with aesthetics in mind, but all of it adding up to something that is, quite often, perfect. What an achievement that is...................US born author Bill Bryson

The best thing about Great Britain and Northern Ireland are all the public footpaths which cover all the countryside and mountains, it’s so accessible, you don’t have to have fancy gear and be super fit. If the mountains are too high they’re not accessible and you can only view them, there are literally thousands of walks which are all mapped, other countries don’t have this.

He is so right, Catbells does leave a lasting impression on your memory! I'm 23 now, and I still remember climbing Catbells at the age of 5 or 6 with my parents and grandad. It was a beautifully sunny and warm day, but the wind was strong, so there were even a couple of mini tornadoes / dust devils on the hillside, and the view on this video is just as I remember. Amazing, when you consider I haven't thought about that day for perhaps 10 years or more.

Until the 1990's the area around Durham was a centre of the coal mining industry, when it didn't look quite as pretty as it does today! The view from the top of Durham Cathedral's tower is stunning on a clear day. You can go on a guided tour of Durham's Norman castle which was the Palace of the Prince-Bishops of the County Palatine of Durham until 1832, and thereafter a Hall of Residence for University students! Durham is about fifteen minutes by train from the much larger city of Newcastle-on-Tyne, which is also well worth a visit!
