Күн бұрын

🇰🇵North Korea, or officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), stands as one, if not the most isolated major tank manufacturer in the world. Sometimes thought of as a relic of the Cold War desperately clinging onto existence, the country, sometimes known as the Hermit Kingdom, has long wanted to assert its independence from the Soviet Union and China when it comes to its military equipment, long before the Soviet Union even collapsed.
The country’s military industry started becoming increasingly independent in the late 1960s. Since then, it has put out vehicles differing more and more significantly from their Soviet or Chinese ancestors. Despite the harsh interruption of the 1990s crisis and famine, the 2000s have seen a significant renewal for North Korea’s tank industry, with a large variety of new vehicles introduced since the start of the 21st century.
One of the most significant and iconic of these developments is the Songun-Ho main battle tank, unveiled during the 65th anniversary of the Worker’s Party of Korea military parade. When unveiled, it was one of, if not the North Korean MBT that appeared to differ the most from the T-62 on which the DPRK based its Chonma-Ho series of main battle tanks.

I had made a comment about a year ago, saying they should give individual playlists for every country featured and their armored vehicles respectively. I love the content and the history provided, but in my opinion, a small amount of effort organizing the videos would make a great deal of improvement for the current subscribers and future subscribers who are looking for information on “that one tank” in whatever nation it happens to belong to. Edit: They actually listened, three days ago they made playlists for the individual countries. Someone at TE saw this. Whoever you are, you’re an absolute legend for taking this into consideration. Thank you very very much. From me and most likely many other current and future subscribers.

Fact: some believe that the M2020 tank models we saw recently is actually a deeply revised design - both in its appearance and internal technologies - of Songun-Ho, combined with import technologies from China and Iran.

SO UH...one note, Chonma 215, 216, and Songun did NOT use smaller roadwheels, that was a mistake I made back in the day as well, they are identical to regular T-62s but because of the layout changing and the hull being slightly lengthened they could afford to just barely squeeze a 6th wheel in in fact the T-72 wheel is only SLIGHTLY smaller than that of T-34/55/62 series, and in fact at some factories and repair shops they often use old T-55 wheels with the rubber shaved down a bit to transport the tanks around as to not damage/wear out new T-72 ones anyways, Overall Great work! EDIT: One other thing, I do actually believe the Norks saying the songun has Composite, there are OBVIOUS weld lines conveniently around the "cheeks" of the turret, which could be exactly where it is installed, and if thats the case it could also explain another reason for the turret being "taller" as to move all the gear back so the Composite could fit

Producing tanks is a lot easier when you have a massive pool of borderline slaves and see no need to give the population anything but the bare minimum needed to survive in the best case scenario. Most countries on the planet could produce tanks if they wanted to, they just choose not to because it's a lot easier to just buy them, something NK can't and probably doesn't want to do.

The thing i always wondered with North Korean made tanks is, have they ever performed a modification on the Soviet-style tanks they made to perform better in mountainous terrain? Because Korean peninsula have a mountainous terrain, and i feel that Soviet T-series tanks will not perform well in that kind of terrain, mostly due to the little gun depression, and the lack of hydropneumatic suspension like the ones found on South Korea or Japanese MBTs.
@RugnirSvenstarr
@RugnirSvenstarr 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think we know the gun elevation/depression specs (elevation can be as important as depression in mountainous areas) but the video does mention the turrets are a little taller than russian designs which could potentially allow for it; we just don't know though.

Watching the North Korean Army propaganda video covering the training and infantry using AKMs 7,62mm with everything in these guns worn to death then rebuild on used parts and then three times repeted this cycles. Like the black blue finish turned into polished to shine only because of extensive use fo last 60-70 years. Soldiers shooting from the trenches in the WW2 tactics style. All filming totaly staged so every soldier had like 2 rounds in the AKM mag and the PKT opetator had empty belt with three rounds ready to fire this burst and film it only. And all the "hard training" done. Yeah half the PKTs dod not cycled the 3rounds. But the parade training literally takes the shape of so extensive preparations that marching woman had to continue even after got injured because of the overloading with hours of constant strain of innatural marching "style" (which I found only in India Pakistan, Iran and Russia) I think the lack of depression or the hydropneumatics in the suspenssion of these tanks is their last problem. Having the tank running, with full tanks of fuel and ammo racks with the ammo that will not fail to ignite because of its age. These are the NK Army challenges!

The Songun Ho always makes me think that there was actually some Chinese influence on the Korean design, the overall shape of the hull, and especially from a side view, is quite similar to that of the ZTZ-96 series, with a gradual slope towards the engine deck, as opposed to the Western "hump" type of engine deck or Soviet flat style.

I doubt the inclusion of ATGM's is for improved penetration as compared to the main gun. It's far more likely that the ATGM's are to compensate for a lack of accuracy at longer ranges, indicating drawbacks of the primitive fire control systems that North Korea has available.

Putting manpads on tanks is unironically the funniest shit I've ever seen, even if their latest mountings allow for operating them inside the tank. Manpads is not in anyway offense-oriented, and you need to see air targets before you can lock on and fire, and visibility isn't exactly what a tank is known for. That said, they might have valid reasons to do this, e.g. if I have limited production capacities for APC's that can carry this sort of AA gear I might consider putting them on tanks out of desperation.

The DPRK has acquired around 75 T-72 Ms from various sources in the 2000s , they were going to produce a copy of the tank but the poor performance of the tank during the gulf war stopped that, the DPRKs military intelligence has been acquiring data on the T-90 and type 99a as well as south Korean K-1 and K-2 . The DPRKs military industrial complex has been under going modernisation in the past few years , production of the Mig-29S started last year . There are plenty of people who work in the Russian military industries who still support Socialism and supply data to Socialist countries like P.R.C and the DPRK.
