I thought the hereditary system was applied only to the Kim family. But, the fact that other government and military positions are passed down too makes the image of North Korea being more similar to a traditional kingdom than a republic.

Many KPA garrisons act like brigands or mafias toward locals due to lax discipline and logistics. But if you mess with some nerdy looking guy with labor hero medal, the whole unit and the family will be in world of pain because such recipients would likely be tied to the highest of elites. It's a symbol of power and status.
