Medals are often made of bronze, brass, or copper, while in countries with scarce resources, like DPRK, they're often made of zink alloys or tin. Most of these metals aren't magnetic.

Welcome to military medals. There are military medals for almost everything, and the only part that makes NK stand out is the inherited medals portion. If the US were to follow the inherited medals custom, then many generational military families would be sporting similar coats.

I thought the hereditary system was applied only to the Kim family. But, the fact that other government and military positions are passed down too makes the image of North Korea being more similar to a traditional kingdom than a republic.

What will be truly interesting is the next sucession, to date the Kim Dynasty has passed from father to son, this time we are looking at a father to daughter sucession. How the various members of the 'nobility' are going to react to that will make for interesting times.

For very prestigious medals, they are also frequently worn on top of civilian clothes, not to earn salutes and respect, but to intimidate others. Many KPA garrisons act like brigands or mafias toward locals due to lax discipline and logistics. But if you mess with some nerdy looking guy with labor hero medal, the whole unit and the family will be in world of pain because such recipients would likely be tied to the highest of elites. It's a symbol of power and status.

I remember reading that Stallin had to create a signal to let everybody know when to stop clapping. Nobody whated to be the first one to stop as it might be looked at as disloyalty. Stallin whould clap as well and when he stoped it was time for the crowd to stop.
