A most gorgeous fish the dollies. Those red colours and pink spots are pure bliss to gaze. The solitude of the pristine scenery, the light of the rainy day…knowing that there are bears and moose around….pure joy of life indeed. How fotunate you guys are to live such a dream. A wonderful video.

Beautiful fish! I've been blessed with being able to fish Alaska my entire life and the biggest dollies that I ever came across were in the kanektok river in Bristol bay. Some beasts in there! ✌️🎣🐻👍

Awesome fish! Nice job! There seems to be a little confusion with the species you were catching. All of the fish that I saw caught were either Artic char or salmon (the last fish). I did not actually see any dolly varden caught.
@troutacademy
@troutacademy 2 жыл бұрын
Seth, thanks for the comment, I appreciate the support. The last fish is a silver salmon but the rest are dollies. Arctic char are lake spawners and dollies are river spawners, all of these fish are moving into the river on their spawning migration and there are no lakes in this part of the system. Additionally the tails, gill rakers, fins, mouths and spotting are all different between the 2 species. For example, arctic char have a forked tail and dollies are more squared. Dollies have a larger mouth with the maxilla extending further behind the eye and typically have a much more pronounced kype. There is a lot of confusion surrounding these 2 species as they are both char and both live in the arctic and people interchange the names frequently. A big part of the confusion comes because dolly varden were once considered trash fish and had a bounty on their heads. Arctic char however have been widely considered prized table fare and so anglers and lodges like to refer to dolly varden as arctic char because it once was considered a more sought after game fish. The famous Tree River has seen this same confusion, the fish have been called arctic char for decades, however a scientific study shows they are actually a hybrid being more than 74% genetically dolly varden, which is why they spawn in the river. If you check out the Film "Seriously North" on the Blue Halo channel you will see the difference between the char in that film versus the dollies in this vlog. I hope this helps clear up any of the confusion. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

This is in Ak, flights and charter planes make this fairly expensive so I guess it depends on what you consider "doable"? I guide in the area so if you are interested let me know.

Thanks for the response. The fish are dollies, you can tell by the tail, position of the eye compared to the maxilla, shape/size of mouth and the fact that they are moving into the river to spawn. Arctic char spawn in lakes, where dollies spawn in rivers. Thanks for watching, have a great day.
