Abby doesn't work because the setting doesn't work (anymore) When he and the other high rank traitor characters were effectively "left behind to fight the long war" as the primes went off to the realm of the gods to play their own games, it made them unique. These guys were powerful by HH standards which means in M41, they should be primarch level compared to the slowly decaying remains of the imperium. But this is M42 now. The game where primarchs hang out all over the place, we have super duper space marines, and blowing up Cadia means jack and shit, and jack left town.

I'd like an abbadon who's just the old, grey-haired man who saw the world burn around him, his loved ones falling into turmoil helpless to stop it, and perpetuates that turmoil at his own expense, he's aware of it, but it's all he has left, waxing philosophically with people, he knows he's a loser, a failure, just like the rest of his kin, but he'll be damned before he lets anyone else get a drop of rest while he breathes. Honestly it would have been better if Abbaddon was in the background as a chaos strategist and not a Saturday morning cartoon villain of the week... He was a high ranking commander in the Horus Heresy and has centuries of combat experience and leading troops he should have been considered something of a mythical foe that should be known but not seen especially on tabletop. It would certainly make the Black Legion more depth. But that would require a writer with at least half a functioning brain. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

I like the idea that Abaddon thinks that the Emperor would discard them after the galaxy was conquered. I believe that's probably what would happen as well.

I agree with pretty much everything you pointed out. In fact, i was even telling you the very same things that you ended up saying in the video (obviously you cant hear me haha). One of the biggest flaws is that he is not a Primarch, and never will be. Once they were re introduced to the setting, we all know there are bigger and badder warriors on the field. Abby will never be THE bad guy. I still maintain that WHEN Perturabo takes the field again, the Imperium is going to have a baaaaad time. I do think it would be interesting to see how Abby and each of the traitor Primarchs get along, as it were. I can imagine a scene similar to Perty-Fulgrim where Perty absolutely puts Fulgrim in his place. I ALLOW my legionaries to fight for you, but you will NEVER give ME orders, "Despoiler"(says with derision). When the time is right FOR ME to take command, I WILL. Abigail the Despondent only ever was one thing to me - conversion parts. Always preferred to make my own characters because the 40k universe is a big place and it has room for creativity.

I never thought of Abbadon as basically Big Boss with the Black Legion being his Outer Heaven. They were created to fight, and thus he gave his brothers an eternal purpose.

What shocked me with the whole Femstodies response was not that they said It but the utter arrogance of it. I had the same feeling, like you said, with the 13 black crusades. The level of arrogance of GW and willingness to just tell people who pay them so much money to piss off and call them idiots. THEN I thought about it as disney Star Wars, and I realized i was being an idiot for not seeing what was actually happening and that GW actually think like Disney that they are just too big to fail. I realized that this level of arrogance has already been clearly displayed already with the "you will not be missed" and that GW was acting exactly as I should have expected. Great video sir, you are spot on with what would happen with a Primarch, IMO. I really enjoy the rant videos, too. Thanks for the food for thought.

For added context for the development of the lore, way back around 1999 the 12th black crusade was orchestrated by the Deceiver (C'tan). This was before the necron super retcon. Originally one of the primary reasons for the 13th black crusade was claiming territory. This would allow the chaos factions to get out of the eye of terror and obtain strategic resources. Abaddon merely wanted to kill the emperor and destabilise the imperium. Just to prove he's better than Horus. *The big problem with Abaddon is he's not the main villain of chaos. He's just one of many. He's good at bringing the chaos factions together but he shouldn't be the only character capable of this. He's not even extraordinary in his own martial capability.

I see we are still circling this drain?

The GW plot armour is just the worst and has been going on for over two decades: going through "Zombie Slayer" and expecting Gotrek to finally kill Heinrich Kemmler and Krell, only for them to be whisked away at the last second because they were named characters with miniatures in the game was so frustrating to read; given the absolute nightmare situation they'd been causing throughout the entire story and the build-up for how much you want to see Gotrek and Felix finally kill them gets you really hyped, only for them to yank the rug out from under the reader at the climax by magicking them away before Gotrek lands the final blow on Krell - it's not like Lucius where they gave him a reason why his plot armour exists, (no matter how flimsy) they just yank Abaddon out from the killing blow at the last second because he's not allowed to die and be replaced by another Chaos champion who might do better. He's no better than a Saturday morning cartoon villain right now, he has no goal beyond "I want to destroy the Imperium and rule the galaxy" and every time he's about to bite the dust, he gets to escape at the final moment before he can be slain, all while giving a new villain of the week a reason to fight against the Imperium themselves - the story of a weapon without a war is a great look into the mind of a Veteran of the Long War, it's exactly the motivation Abaddon needs to keep fighting, (many soldiers in the real world can probably relate to that feeling) yet that just blows away like a fart in the wind when he's so two-dimensional like this. If they can make Gotrek's "stranger in a strange land" and "tool of a god" stories work in Age of Sigmar, you'd think they'd be able to do the same for a character such as Abaddon, but I guess that's only going to be reserved for the Loyalists like Girlyman or Dante since they're the "good guys."

I'll say this: Abaddon looks really cool, he has a great model, his idea of "Vindicta" is badass, he tried to win the Siege of Terra with Perturabo as a soldier and not through Warp power. That's all good enough for me. His future is my head canon. "In shame and shadow recast, in black and gold reborn'.

Tbh, Warhammer generally don't have interesting main villains because the status quo demands that they don't fulfil their ambition and when they do like with the Warhammer Fantasy End Times, it was kinda badly written.

I liked Abaddon as the big bad for pre primaris 40k, he was a threatening villain and an equal to Calgar and the like, now with the primaris and two loyalist primarchs returning he's lost a lot of the threat, either Guiliman or the Lion would smoke Abaddon where Calgar or Dante or Asmodia would have struggled too. The on going story line from archs of omen doesn't make him an active threat rather a prop for Vashtor to use

Abaddon is always going to be something of an oddity in terms of strength and accomplishment since he's the poster child for Chaos at their strongest as Undivided. I think Abaddon is the kind of character who knows that to take the Imperium for himself (if ever does) is that he'll have to play the long game. Khayon didn't surrender himself to be beneath the Imperial Palace without a reason. Forces the likes of Be'lakor will not sit idly by to allow Abaddon to have his triumphs eclipse his own in the eyes of the Gods. Even the Primarchs themselves will have their roles to play and as is ever the case with individuals like Kor Pharon it is foolish to underestimate anyone be they mortal, Astartes or Primarch.

I think the issue with Abaddon losing to other characters and surviving is that NO named character that has a model can die, as decreed by GW. I can understand why. I'm a massive fan of Abaddon so I'd be upset if he dies. But on the other hand I can understand why he cant kill Calgar or Dante because THEY have plenty of fans. Like on Vigilus, he bested Calgar in single combat but was forced to retreat because some of Calgar's men infiltrated the Vengeful Spirit and he had to clear them out and then of course Papa G showed up. As for the thirteen crusades, they did flesh them out into victories for Abaddon by shifting the target from Cadia to something else while also prodding Cadia's defenses. It makes him look a lot better in retrospect. But on the other hand I do love the PC perspective you've given to Abaddon. Gives me something more to chew on and I think enjoy, as Abaddon is just a captain not even a Primarch. Abaddon is the naked dude with a stick in dark souls. ... I think we can all agree that GW is the BBEG of the scenario either way.

The primary problem with GW is that it doesn't respect its customers. GW doesn't respect its customers time, their money, their intelligence, or their opinions. Until GW changes that fundamental problem everything will suffer
