How did you break it off so clean without ripping various pads off - that’s an amazing feat by itself (either that or the soldering with extremely weak and brittle).

For tasks like that you want to use a hot air BGA machine. Where I work I use a Honton HT-R390. Company got it 8 years ago and it does component removals like that with ease. In the 8 years I been using the machine to replace connectors (currently use it to replace lvds connector on Apple motherboards) I have never melted a connector. Sometimes customers want to replace the faulty component themselves thus if we have a scrapped board available, I will use the BGA machine to remove the connector from the scrapped boards. Comes of the pcb perfectly. I used to use a Weller heating plate with a hot air gun to remove components because the small size of the heating plate and the hot air gun was perfect size for a work bench but over time, some of the components I had to remove needed more heat due to the size and the thickness of the pcb which meant I had to go for something a bit bigger. We already had the BGA machine and I wondered if it could remove plastic components without melting them and it can.

Alex, I have a batch of Nintendo 3DS and 3DSXL FPC connectors to repair on my Instagram channel. Before retro hardware got to be too expensive, I acquired the worst basketcase consoles I could find on eBay and set aside the boards I found with bad FPC connectors, as I considered that repair to be for the future when I was more skilled. I have ordered some low melt solder from your website and I think I'm going to give it a go. At least some of the connectors can be had from China now, as donors become brittle with age. The largest connector I've been successful with is four pins but after watching your video I have new confidence. Used working 3DS XL consoles especially are very lucrative right now, so thanks in advance.
@nerddub
@nerddub 3 жыл бұрын
Connectors like FPC connectors are really only available in a couple variants, top contact, bottom contact, dual, and then the pin pitch and mounting style. I'm pretty confident you could measure that connector and find a suitable replacement if a donor board wasn't available.

The red glue is for securing the heavy connector in the second part of reflow. Heat causes the glue to harden on first pass of oven. When other side of pcb is component placed then reflowed, the glue stops the part falling off. It does little to really secure the part so the side mount points should be re-soldered for strength. So don't re-add glue.

You make it look so easy. I wish I had your agility! I am trying to find a video from your channel that shows how to reconnect a plastic connecter to a board. It looks like it is just set in place with some solder on each side. The board is: rsag7.820.7351/roh and it is the white connecter that goes to the on/off - IR button. Any help would be appreciated or a link to one of your videos. Thank you

I have a ribbon cable that shows wear at the contact points. Also, the clips that hold the ribbon cable locked in has the 2 locking tabs broken off. To fix ribbon cable, I could cut off a strip to shorten it which would change the contact points. But I would have problem holding it in place. I tried cleaning contacts with alcohol and then pushed back into slot. I then applied hot glue on back side of cable to hold in place. This worked for a couple of weeks but I think I have bad connections again. I even thought about replacing connector on board, but not sure what to get. Only know that my cable is 15 pin. This is on a stove/range. The other ends of the ribbon are attached to splitters which go to various buttons on the face of stove. What should this cost to repair?
