I just foraged some elm oysters today, and I must say that pleurotus dryinus is not an elm oyster. It is the veiled oyster. Elm oysters are Hypsizygus ulmarius, and are actually in a different genus altogether. You can see in the video that the gills of the mushroom picked here are running down the stipe, elm oysters in the wild have gills that curve back up into the stipe, giving them a more traditional cap-and-stem look. When cultivated artificially (I haven't had the opportunity to verify this with my own eyes) they do grow their gills down the stem, however. Awesome video regardless, amazing shots and our friend at fascinatedbyfungi is an incredibly knowledgeable and fluent communicator.

I’m on my second year of my biology degree and the more I learn, the more I keep coming back to mushrooms and finding them more and more incredible! Winter is fast approaching here in Quebec and I’m already looking forward to spring to go mushroom hunting again ❤️ thank you for this beautifully made video!

Really cool to see you guys appreciating my homeland! I grew up 45 minutes inland of Portland and went out Matsutaki hunting, they grow under hemlock trees near water and are used in Japanese gourmet cooking. We used to sell them for $15 a pound back in the late 90's and eat some ourselves. I also happened upon a massive 40 pound hen of the woods about 8 years ago in the same area. Also plenty of lobster mushrooms all near the capital area. Maine is definitely good for some mushrooms

There are so many great wild edible mushrooms that grow in Maine. It was tough last summer, but looking forward to our next foraging season!

you are right, "things have been so dry" I am on the northwest shore of Lake Ontario & it has not been a good fungi spring, summer or fall. zero Maitake, zero King Boletes this fall. i had to set up my martha tent to make sure I didn't have to pay $20.00 a pound for mushrooms ar the store because there was no mushrooms in the forest this year.

Why are you inactivating comments on your videos? I wanted to ask a question / point out a difference in culture, at least to Sweden about Amanita Muscaria and Christmas. In Sweden we don't hang socks over our fireplace, so that it would be there for drying Amanita Muscaria sounds weird. But we still have small "figurines" of them around the advent candles in the white moss.

Sorry about that! I didn't think we deactivated any comments. That's interesting stuff!

Why must people talk about their educational credentials? He PhD was not mushrooms.. so he is self taught as a fantastic, not different than a man about a degree. We are so fooled.

Nowadays people are ignorant. If someone didn't go to college for a skill they claim to have mastered, it doesn't count.
