An early clinical trial in individuals with the deadly brain cancer, glioblastoma, showed an experimental spherical nucleic acid drug developed by Northwestern University scientists was able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and trigger the death of tumor cells. Lead investigator, Priya Kumthekar, MD, explains the results of the study.

This is a tempting concept however I know that time and again people think they’ve come close to answers only to learn they didn’t work. I’m also wondering what’s the catch? I’ve learned to ask this because I watched this monster steal my moms mind, dignity and life. All of which happened with no professionals willing to be upfront with my parents over the prognosis. Obviously I want this to be successful but you’ll have to forgive the suspicion and pessimism. I learned them the hard way!

I'm so sorry for your loss. My 10yr old son had a brain tumour too. But thankfully after a year & a half of aggressive radio/chemo therapy. The after affects from these drugs are terrible. But thank God he's alive & well now. I really hope these new drugs give better chances of life without all the negative affects.

@@jennzenn971 Me and you both! I’m so glad to hear when anyone, but especially a child, can deal with any type of brain tumor and come out on the other side! The whole large group of diseases that initiate from the brain just has me looking at the topic with suspicion. What on earth is going on? Both of my grandmothers battled Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. My only paternal uncle was a notch under monk status (never drank, smoked, did drugs and was always very healthy). He developed brain tumors that confounded the best doctors. He participated in the GammaKnife trials as well as the RU486 drug trials. (It was the foundation for ‘abortion pills’). I have several aunts and uncles who have dealt with crazy mental health illnesses and substance abuse. Same with cousins. Then my mom had two forms of primary brain cancer: Glioblastoma Multifotme and Oligodendroglioma. Toss in a few great aunts & uncles with strokes and seizure disorders. I personally have dealt with medical issues that no doctor would believe until the right tests were run. That was basically from birth. I’ve since had more time than I care to admit battling mental health issues and substance abuse that never responded to any therapies or medications. Out of all of these relatives that encompass 5 generations but not quite 20-30 people, there are only three things in common: 1. Born and raised in the US; 2. Almost all men spent time (if not full careers) in military; 3. All spent more than a couple years in a 50 mile radius in Georgia. Beyond that... I’m just left with thousands of questions... no one willing or able to answer them honestly, and a deep suspicion that all of this is not simply a fluke of nature. If that makes me sound like a paranoid lunatic, then so be it!

I wonder if the NU129 can be taken if the original tumor was removed. And regrowth occurred. I've had my tumor removed and then it came back quite quickly so another removal was done. The couldn't get all of it on the 2nd removal. Wow! It is a trip and a half. Glad to hear they had some success.

If anyone out there reads this; we have a current family member, age 84 recently diagnoses with this. 12 to 16 mos was the life expectancy given. Not very promising, not to mention not knowing the progression of the disease and how it will effect their ability to live comfortably through this. Only time will tell, but something we are not looking forward to. We have more to learn, but at this time, the research is dim.

I’m finishing my first round of SOC at NW Delnor after 2 Stage IV Glioblastoma surgeries; first thru NW Delnor ER, second at NW CDH, with 7-10 days in between at NW MarianJoy. I was approved 4 a NW Proton trial but insurance wouldn’t cover. I’ll have my first post SOC MRI in mid January 2022. Can I qualify 4 the phase 1 Nanotechnology trial if I have recurrence? Hoping there is none, but trying to plan ahead which is something I couldn’t do in September, as I had no symptoms until I looked back with some hindsight. #ih8gbm4

@@cish6047 The Optune is not that bad to work with. It requires you to shave your head, I wasnt happy about that but given the alternative. The optune is definitely a lifestyle change. I call it my monkey on my back. I am using it 70% of the time and almost everynite. There is a back pack which lets you get out and about etc. Placing the patches takes some time to learn, my brother is good at it and I have learned myself to do it.

Our son was Diagnosed in October 2019 with Glioblastoma. He had Radiation and then was fitted with the Optune. He used the machine 18 hours per day along with Chemotherapy for over a year. His tumor has shrunk. We feel very Blessed because he feels great. He walks his dog everyday, he shops, cooks, drives and takes his grandchildren out for the day. We know Glioblastoma is a deadly cancer but are thankful for the time we have had thus far.
