I guess back in the day, 5 cents would get you that much. Anybody old enough to remember a nice chunk of [penny] candy? Today what use to be a penny in the 60s and 70s, cost you a dime, maybe [even] a quarter today ... and the portions are way smaller.

Just imagine: a little boy/girl decades ago hanging in the neighborhood growing up visiting a little shop everyday that they love to visit and saying hi to the shop owner to brighten his day and grab a handful of candy... and now decades later, the machine is being restored to its former glory and reviving a small piece of history. Thats my favorite part of these videos is imagining the story and history behind the littlest trinket.

I saw and have painted them in several colors. Red, yellow and a blue hammered metallic look were the most common here in the Midwest. A few green hammered metallic look, but they were sort of rare. For a collector they had me do one that was chrome plated on outside shell. Personally I didn't like the look. But they had the money so I did what they wanted.

I almost wanted to cry seeing that old candy machine. I remember when grocery stores (especially A&P, Big Star, Winn Dixie, etc) and K-Mart used to have those candy machines lined up in the front of the store near the registers. On the way out, I spent my change to buy gumballs and tart candies. I wish we could go back to the 70's and 80's. Times were so much simpler and normal back then.

@jenslundy
@jenslundy 5 жыл бұрын
@@clray123 Cooking oil is a horrible lubricant for mechanical lubrication. It gums up, especially on rotating parts. Once the solvents evaporate it becomes a sticky mess. It may prevent bacterial growth, but I'm not sure there are too many problems with bacteria issues in bulk M&Ms. Having worked on industrial food processing equipment for years has taught me that cooking spray as a machine lube causes way more problems than it solves. There are far better food safe options to keep this machine in top shape.

When I was a child there was one of those stores that had everything, back when Mom and Pop businesses ruled the USA. At the storefront there was a bank of these vending machines and my brother and I really wanted some of what they had. We got some change from mom as she waited to pay the clerk and went for what we wanted but got a shocking surprise. The dime we used opened the floodgate and stuff just poured out! We told the clerk then asked if we could have two small bags and permission to plunder. I remember thinking this was so fantastic, little bubbles with glittering rings and small toy cars. Believe it or not, many of the things were made of metal!

You can indeed get all the parts for these. People make a living off of these machines, and it makes sense they’d stay in service a long time. Mind you, you’d be replacing the 5¢ mechanism for a 25¢ PDQ.

I’m no expert, but powder coating is just what it sounds like. It’s a powder coating that hardens when baked. It’s much more durable than painting, but it’s also much more expensive to do, which is why painting is more common. Not everyone has access to the powder coating tools, but anyone can grab some paint and get to work.

The only thing in this video that I saw was that after everything was said and done, the embossing on the glass container was placed 180 degrees off from its position on tear down. Still, such wonderful video and restoration Thanks!
