Now, I’ve reviewed countless antivirus providers over the years, and let me tell you - these three often come up as acclaimed “best antivirus” picks. Yet, is that with good reason? Like, are they actually secure, and worth their pricing point? Finding the right antivirus for YOU can be a tough task. That’s why in this video I’ll offer an honest Norton vs TotalAV vs Avira mash-up, answering all the important questions.
Each of these providers is viewed well within the market, with big customer bases, and some are even being acclaimed by independent testing institutes. Yet, let’s look under the security hood to determine the safest antivirus…
1️⃣ Security comparison: Which is Safer?
For starters, all providers boast the must-have; real-time protection. This means your device is monitored around the clock. The most extensive version of this would be from Norton antivirus, protecting you as your browser. Furthermore, Norton uses sophisticated AI, to detect threats, and has a smart firewall. The latter is two-way, monitoring not only your received traffic but also sent. These combined, make it a really advanced option in terms of security.
So - do the other providers have anything to counteract this? Though there’s no firewall, TotalAV antivirus has cloud scanning and protection against anything suspicious as you browse the web. You won’t find parental controls either though, so, again, mainly tailored toward malware removal and mitigation.
And then Avira, while it is worth noting they are one of very few providers to offer real-time protection and a limited VPN and password manager with their free plan, they are lacking with no sandbox mode, wifi protection, or even webcam protection. I wouldn’t really say it is a full cybersecurity suite.
2️⃣ Scan speed and overall performance:
That aside, duration and scan customization come into play…Avira took around 16 minutes for a full system scan. They have two main scanning options, and then a “manage scans” section. I found this convenient to schedule any custom scans or pick individual folders I’d like to check for malware.
TotalAV sits 2nd place for the quickest scan, just behind Norton. Their full scan took around 14 minutes. I like the simple navigation of this provider, go to the main section, and simply choose between the two options. You’ll see how many files are scanned in real-time, on a nice clean dashboard. Though there are more advanced options for experienced users, take their custom scan for instance, which aren’t limited to particular files, but also disk scans.
Now, Norton’s full scan was quick, just over 10 minutes. As I’ve mentioned in previous Norton review videos, I’m not a massive fan of the different pop-up windows you navigate to reach different features. But this is a great scan duration, nonetheless. Norton does have more options when it comes to scans, my most prized would be their ‘Norton Insight’ option. This automatically marks any sus files that may need custom scans, ensuring the protection of my device.
So - it is clear to see sometimes it's a toss-up between speed, resources, and detection. None of these providers are lengthy by any means. Yet, Norton does well at detecting all threats, in lightning time.

So - the takeaway from this Totalav vs Norton vs Avira video would be that Norton excels in a lot of different categories, but Avira and TotalAV aren’t far behind. It really depends on the device you’re looking to use, and what features you deem invaluable.
