Hello and welcome to our guide of all things from Setesdal!
Today, we visit Sylvsmie Rysstad Sylv, which is run by Torfinn and his mother, to learn more about crafting traditional filigree brooches, cufflinks, and other jewellery worn with the traditional folk costumes. And to talk about an extended family that has kept the craftsmen’s and craftswomen’s traditions alive for over 300 years.

I happen to be a goldsmith who also knits, so for me this episode was the best of the series.Passionate about foreign language I appreciate the occasion to hear native speaking.Special thanks to Carlos for the translation.Don’t worry to much about the captions auto generated by KZfaq, even if they are not perfect it’s better than nothing, some people always need to criticise . Thanks for continuing to entertain us

Such exquisite jewelry and accoutrements for the folk costumes! I also love reading your English translation while listening to Norwegian and siphoning out words that have similar linguistic roots (yes, I am a language nerd). I hope your series on Setesdal can eventually be featured at a historic site or museum in Norway as these programs are a wonderful contribution to the documentation of folkways of the region.

This series has been a treat! Torfinn’s family tree put me in mind of an expression my husband’s Swedish and Norwegian family used when I first met them more than fifty years ago: “If you are not a relative, then you must be a relative of a relative!” At the time many were first generation Americans living in Northern Maine who were proud to be citizens and equally proud of their heritage and traditions. Arne and Carlos, you have invited the sound of their voices to the front of my memory bank!

What absolutely beautiful work!!! Thankyou both so much for taking all of us along on this journey. I have truly loved every bit of it. I can't wait to see what other delights you come up with over time. Documenting traditional arts is so important. You have just ensured that many more people develop a love for traditional Norwegian crafts, and maybe renewed an interest in traditions from our own heritages. Thankyou for all that you do. You are truly a blessing to this world and most especially to those who watch your videos.

I left a thumbs up but only because there's no other way to show how much I have LOVED this series! And still there's the one with the music. It will be so exciting to see Arne's cufflinks and your costumes complete. The black and white 'lice' sweaters are so amazing - very classic and beautiful. I love that while they are all so different, there is a cohesive look that keeps the traditions alive. You two work SO hard to bring great content and yet you make it look easy. It can't be, so we viewers have much respect for you and your team. And we learn so much at the same time. What a lovely country; both the scenery and it's people. Thank you sincerely for all you do and most especially for this series.

Big thank you for this series. It has been so illuminating, inspiring, beautiful and full of information I did not know. You did it so respectfully and thoughtfully to your guests that was very touching to me. Thank you Arne and Carlos, warm greetings from Finland.
