Understand Norway: What does it take to love like a Norwegian? To understand the Norwegian way of expressing love? Love - a dark Norwegian story. Join us on a roller coaster of a dark, hysterical and enlightening tour of Norwegian love life. Visit the mysterious and creepy Vigeland Park, in the middle of Oslo. Where we explain everything, you need to know about Norwegians' feelings, love life, trauma and the way we flirt. In the end we will show you some surprising, disturbing and sickening secrets in this famous Norwegian tourist attraction. We use nude and explicit granite statues to exemplify the various stages of emotion and love, from birth to death. We make satirical, sarcastic and sometimes precise statements about the innermost feelings of Norwegians. On our journey we will stump into a swastika and criminal ugly behavior.
You also get some Norwegian mating dancing, glimpses of a dystopian family life, and lots of other fun and hilarious facts. Ronald thinks he is a love expert. Mads obviously makes it clear that he is not

@@fortuna240 I'm in the USA, so it would be out of the question for me. Do you know what yarn bombing means? (If not, you would wonder what in the world?!) It means using yarn and knitting to do a large public art project, usually onto existing structures like park benches, fences, light poles, etc. Public statuary can be fair game, too. The idea is to plan it out, prepare the knitting, then sneak out in the night and stitch it all on. Wouldn't the park look grand with all the statues suddenly wearing colorful sweaters, trousers, etc? :D

I saw that park in a beautiful spring day. Still found the statues a bit unsettling. Now I understand that, to get properly the full effect as intended by the artist, you need a gloomy December day: it really brings the creepiness up several notches. Great vid BTW.

The expression he would use in Norwegian is "Jeg elsker deg". I don't think the English language has words equivalent to this Norwegian term, which is usually translated as "I love you". The Norwegian term "å elske" expresses the deepest love, the one you cannot live without. The love that is unconditional, where you can do anything for another person. If you say "Jeg elsker deg" to another person, you really mean it. It comes with a commitment. We often use the term "Jeg er glad i deg" as a "less dangerous" alternative. It can be translated "I care about you", "I like you" or "I have feelings for you". As I have understood the English term "love", it corresponds better to the Norwegian term "glad i" or "like".

h z...the awkward silence is mostly on the part of the woman/ girlfriend, due to her insecurities about the relationship. Most women don't understand guys just don't reveal their feelings, because if he doesn't want to be with you, he makes any number of excuses (that was always the case before social media).

I can relate to this video when it comes to the differences between Norwegian men and women. My farmor was constantly saying "jeg elsker deg" to me and my siblings. While I never doubted my father's love for me, my mother, and siblings; I can't ever recall him ever saying that he loved us. He expressed his love for us by his hard work and always putting us before himself. I miss him terribly.

Not correct. I live in Wisconsin. We have worse weather than Sunny Eastern Oslo. We range from 35 below to 112 F. LOL, let's see if you can handle THAT!

I was 45 before my Dad said "You too", when I said "I love you, Dad". Dad: 100% Norwegian heritage, but if you ask him, he stares at me and says I am American. Yet, we pigged out on lutefisk, lefse and bollerkaka for Christmas Eve. This is a park for the foreigners. Nobody in my Norske/American life would be caught dead naked or posing. LOL!

Many young families in Oslo spend time there, it's very popular. One of my dearest friends emigrated from Norway in the early 70s as a young man. He always says "I was born in Norway" not "I am Norwegian". It is also almost impossible to get him to actually say "no" or "I don't like" as he was raised old school to be extremely polite and not offer personal opinions. He will occasionally do so around family and close friends but it's still extremely diplomatic

Growing up, my best friend was a "Norwegian" young man..he was stoic and a "deep well". As we got older, I knew he wanted a romantic relationship but he never verbalized..he showed his affection by making me a nice meal, fixing the breaks on my car etc. When I met another young man who was verbal and romantic...I spoke with my Norwegian but he still couldn't say he loved me...he said " U know how I feel"...I moved on...married and made a family with my romantic young man. Married 36 years until he passed. My Norwegian friend married very late in life and never had children

Sometimes, I feel like a rotten person, but I was only 20 and not experienced in relationships..my Norwegian was my only male experience and he never even kissed me on the cheek...he did hold my hand for approximately 5 minutes, 1 time in all those years...doesn't matter at this point

I am from the north of germany and we show our love like you norwegians like my boyfriens from south of germany told me after we visited norway for 3 month last year :D He often wishes, that i tell more about the "love thing" and i cannot understand, because i think, i show it without words and he is blind to see this way ;) but i try my best... Possibly your funniest video ever. I laughed all the way through, while at the same time feeling some good old-fashioned Northern European shame at the notion of having too much fun. The music added to the creepy-but-amusing factor. My in-laws were married over 50 years and I never heard either of them say "I love you" in the entire time I knew them. When asked about it, their comment was usually: "We are not mushy people." LOL! That defines understatement. They could have posed for some of those statues! Thanks for another great video. 💞

Hi guys, Happy New Year to you!! When I worked in a book store a few years ago, we often used have a Norwegian man come into browse round the books in his lunch break. He was in England on a 3 year apprenticeship. He was a very shy but extraordinarily polite and friendly man but showed very little emotion. He never engaged in ‘small talk’ with any of the staff. On his last day he kept attempting to walk up to the checkout but would then back away. It was only when later we were tidying up the store to close for the day that we found a large bag with a package in. It was labelled To all the girls in The Works...many thanks for your kindness, from Aksel’. Inside the package was a massive box of chocolates that would have cost him about £60.00!! It was so very kind of him, but we think he was way too shy and reserved to give it to us himself!! It’s so true how you Norwegians are so unemotional, I find it quite endearing but also hilarious.😂❤️

If you have something in common, then Norwegians like you. You will have something to talk about. Otherwise, it is awkward. I talk to my dad about weather and laugh at his great sense of humor. If I talk about anything serious, he gets very angry. He doesn't like to feel.

A very interesting video - it truly explains so much to me. My father was Norwegian, but died when I was a youngster. Consequently, I was raised without a full understanding of being Norwegian as, my mother was not Norwegian and we lived apart from the culture. When I was an older teen I was exposed to my Norwegian roots and this video explains so much about this Northern European culture. I thought I was the only one who danced from my hips up! I need to show this to my fellow non-Norwegian Scandinavian friends so they can laugh with me. Thank you.

Regardless if you guys believe me or not, this is so relatable to my life, I swear (minus the carrying passion at 5:13)! Also, at the same time, perhaps my genetic test now explains very well why I have some types of behaviour (it turned out I have some clusters from Bergen area but also Sweden). And also why I love Norwegians so much, there is absolutely no point in hiding it at all, hehe! Thank you so much for making my Christmas so much better! Bra jobba! Dette var so fint, so klart! I am just now learning about this park from this video. I looked it up and the article said it is supposed to be the journey of mankind from cradle to grave. It is all done by one artist. The monolith is supposed to be humans clamoring toward heaven, although I can see the cruder, lewder, grotesque aspects of it in the placement of some of the figures when you got closer to it. In fact, my initial reaction to the park was one of surprise: that there were so many people out walking in that park on a somewhat cold winter day with snow on the ground. (Many Americans tend to hibernate in winter and only go out to go to work or to get groceries.) So kudos for getting exercise outdoors in winter. My next surprise had to do with all the families wheeling baby carriages and walking with children of all ages through the erotic statues, without looking at the art or giving it a second thought. It is said that we are very prudish here in America. Nadine Strosson wrote a whole essay on the sex panic we have here in America where she lists all the pictures and statues involving nudity that had to be taken down, even those that had nothing to do with the erotic, for example, a mural of Columbus discovering America with bare-breasted native women, or a poster in an AIDS clinic promoting safe condom use. They must feel the same in Australia. One Australian woman cautioned in her review of the park, not to feel ashamed; she assured everyone that it is art. (Funny.) Looking at it, I can see allusions to myths like Medusa: the one woman statue holds up her very snake-like hair, and Romulus and Remus: the mother bent over her children looks like the she-wolf suckling the baby founders of Rome. And so on. How do we express love here in America? We idealize it; we present it at its best in the movies, in the best of our romantic comedies like Kate and Leopold, Stranger than Fiction, When Harry Met Sally, etc. This is both good and bad. These movies show the essence of life and love, what it should be, but then too many people get disappointed because the reality doesn't live up to the fantasy. And we are not as glib at throwing the word love around as you and others have suggested. Some of us are, but many of us know the wisdom of Cordelia's words in King Lear: "Love and be silent." These are the thoughts your video and question evoked.

"We use the word 'awesome' a lot." "Hey, Good to see you." "Dude! That rocks!" Come to think of it, we are quite expressive and outspoken in this country. I once asked a lady from Perth Australia her first impression of Americans. She said: "You people are loud in restaurants! Everyone talks to each other." 😀

Nothing wrong with how Norwegians express their love. Just because people see overt displays of affection in romantic Hollywood films and TV they think they can act it out in real life but I find it can be a bit fake. Having said that, I really want to visit Vigeland Park next time I'm in Oslo.

I’m Swedish ancestry 🇸🇪. My friends tell me all the time ... “you’re a difficult man to get to know. You don’t speak too much but when you do, it’s always direct and in point.” I just smile 😉. I find Americans constantly have to make idle chatter and are not comfortable in silence.

YOURWAY2NORWAY ... Ronald/Mads ... I try to be conscious of my arms. If they are crossed, it sends a subliminal message that you are a closed person to the speaker. I usual just keep my hands at my sides when standing or on the arms of a chair when seated. Happy New Year.

thanks for your uplifting spirit, lifts my heart, I feel joy. Some similar but less crystalised instincts but not expressed, like we forgot the instincts or how they can be expressed in modern living, lost our culture a bit maybe. Also wonderful is the travelogue aspect, can't afford or have opp at moment to visit, so really looking forwardto the tram ride next. Thanks again for the joy, I really feel I'm there. Much prefer the Ronald of Norway to the Donald of the US. One of life's universal empaths I think.

There was a survey of married couples, who also owned dogs, in the USA a few years ago. The researchers asked who they liked better--their dog or their spouse. This is actually very similar to how I remember things in the rural Midwest US about 30 years ago. Men were stoic, and parents didn’t show emotions to each other (at least in front of the children), but there was a lot of evening banter. Moving to the city was a huge culture shock, everybody talks all the time and it sometimes feels like people are fake because I’m not used to the outward affections! People say “I love you” to friends they just met!

I don't think the English language has words equivalent to the Norwegian "Jeg elsker deg", which is usually translated as "I love you". The Norwegian term "å elske" expresses the deepest love, the one you cannot live without. The love that is unconditional, where you can do anything for another person. We often use the term "Jeg er glad i deg" as a "less dangerous" alternative. It can be translated "I care about you", "I like you" or "I have feelings for you". As I have understood the English term "love", it corresponds better to the Norwegian term "glad i" or "like".
