In this episode of the No Sediment Wine Podcast, I sat down with Alexandre Chartogne, the winemaker behind the cult Champagne - Chartogne-Taillet. We discussed grower Champagne (also known as artisanal Champagne), Alexandre's approach to viticulture and winemaking in Champagne production, the Meunier grape variety, and other exciting topics.

Well done monsieur Chartogne!! I never tried your wines but for sure they are good. Hi Agnes, I'm glad that most of the time you interview fairly young winemakers/producers and all of them very professional, humble and very very passioned. Thanks a lot for let us know that kind of people of the wineworld,.. may be lesser known than "great maisons" but certainly even important. Cheers

While popular House Champagne labels have their place, Champagne-lovers are increasingly turning to grower Champagne for a sipping experience that is more intimate, authentic and unique

I think Champagne Estates are making very authentic Champagnes, and growers are making very authentic Champagnes, and I personally enjoy both categories. 🍾🥂🥂🥂🥂

He said 'My work is to be lazy' then spent a lot of timing talking about all the things he does to the wine. You made the point well that champagne is a 'made' wine and he responded that the vineyard is 90% of the work and then over the course of the interview he detailed all the work he does in the other 10% 😂@@NoSediment

His comments on riding the fruitiness of the Meunier varietal are very interesting, but I may not totally understand. Is this typical of what a producer would do with this grape or would the same be done with Pinot noir or Chardonnay based champagnes? Why not embrace some of the fruitiness to bring more to the wine? Basically, he doesn't like the varietal but it makes his best cuvée. Fascinating!

And his Meunier is epic! One of my favourite Champagnes! 🙌 no, it is not very typical practice in Champagne, he is artist. 🍾
