I'm sick of anime fans thinking everyone has to like what they like. You have to understand that what you like it might not be other people's thing. If you like political messages in your films some American films have that too. I'm pretty sure the new Mr. Peabody and Sherman movie is a metaphor for gay adoption.

I'm sorry about what I said. Although there are some people of the anime community who are like that most of them aren't. Some of my best friends are anime fans and they're nice people. Actually one of the kids in my Boy Scout troop is the president of the anime club at his school. I'm sorry I offended some people. I meant no harm.

Miyazaki's films have a subtly sinister overtone if you ask me. :O
@hunterspride189 жыл бұрын
Hannah Small First off, I don't have this figured out for all Miyazaki's films so bear in mind that this is a work in-progress list. 1) *Nuassica and the Valley of the Wind:* Out of all his films, this one very much has his strongest environmental message (in my opinion) and with it comes some very eyebrow raising content. There are many moments in the story that suggest that humanity is paying for the way they have treated the environment in the past. A) Bugs have evolved to attack and kill humans as a means to protect the forest as it recovers. B) The forest is defending itself against humans for the way it has been treated. A sentiment that looses all its luster when you realize that the roles are reversed and humanity is almost extinct because of the forest. C) A monologue from a blind old woman when a "Giant Warrior" hatches and starts blowing up scores of charging Ohms. Her general line is this and I quote..."The anger of the Ohm reflects the anger of the Earth, the Earth knows it's wrong for us to survive if we have to depend on a monster like that." *First off, the Giant Warrior translates to Miyazaki's opinion on the creation/use of nuclear weapons, especially when you pay attention to the explosion that occurs after the "Giant Warriors energy attack."* *I could go into the existence of nukes and why they were used in WW2 but to keep it short, I find it very interesting that instead of holding the INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE responsible for their choices/creations, that the film condemns all of humanity to be eradicated even though very specific people were responsible for the creation and usage of such weapons.* *In short:* This movie has a very contemptuous attitude toward humanity, an attitude that is heavily violent as opposed to anything constructive. It doesn't help that the movie is incredibly poor at building it's backstory. It's all tell not show and the fact that the environmental angle is completely surface level makes it extremely hard to understand what legitimate lesson can be learned sub textually from this film. 2) *Princess Mononoke:* This one deals with that same environmental, anti-humanity stuff as VotW, though not as in-your-face. A) There is one moment of backstory where a human is sharing some of the problems a group had earlier where the forest gods (boars) where outraged at the humans cutting down trees to build/expand their village and in response the gods flat out destroyed that village. *In fact, there is an underlying tension throughout the film that humans are constricted and confined to very very specific areas of the land to a suffocating degree. A tension that is rather unfair considering that society grows and with it comes the need to expand.* B) The gods are outright HOSTILE toward humans, death is the immediate answer and when the main character is talking with the Mother Wolf god, she does not hid her contempt of him. *In short:* A message i picked up involved the notion that "nature should be protected and maintained at the expense of human life, ignoring the basic, principle requirements that come from an advancing society. 3) *Ponyo:* This review actually picked up on the (unnecessarily) apocalyptic nature of the film. Ponyo's dad is clearly at odds with humanity in regards to how humans pollute the water (fair criticism). His response however to this problem is.... A) To build up a magical concoction that will create a never ending torrent of aquatic life that will unseat humanities place in the world....basically the end of the world and the very possible genocide of mankind. B) After everything is flooded, people the main characters meet are chirpy and glad faced. Instead of being concerned about how their livelihoods are ruined, they instead are happy and upbeat as if "that is how the world should be." C) During choice scenes (mom and boy driving home), it is possible that someone could translate the waves battering the shore as the ocean having its revenge/payback after being polluted by man for so long. Considering what was mentioned by Ponyo's dad this would line up. *In short:* For a simple story about a fish that wanted to become a girl, the narrative sure is out-of-place in regards to how apocalyptic it is. 4) *Howl's Moving Castle:* For anyone paying attention there is an anti-war message brewing underneath all the story. A) During the scene where Howl is showing the main girl a portal he made for her that consists of a rolling meadow full of flowers, they are interrupted by an imposing sight. A flying fortress loaded with bombs on its way to bomb a target. Howl's response is to destroy the fortresses engines and make it crash so it can't follow through. *The deal breaker occurs when Howl reveals that he doesn't care if the war machine is on their side or not, its an instrument of death and that's all the reasoning needed to destroy it.* Even to this day that moment ranks among my top 10 stupidest moments in film. The amount of pig headed stupidity of that rationale defies comprehension. The moment you start asking questions about war, war machines, politics, etc...the more obvious it is that such a mindset has no place in the realm of constructive messaging! *In short:* This movie is dangerously close to suggesting that war and killing in general is wrong no matter what the situation. Even though it has been proven time and again that your enemies WILL attack and kill you regardless of your stance on war and being armed. 5) *Kiki's Delivery Service:* Out of all my examples, I find this movie to be the most subtle. There isn't anything technically wrong with the movie, but things get weird the moment you look at Kiki's character. A) She's a witch...that's it. Now I can understand if this sounds petty but when you take into account the inherent nature of witchcraft, what it entails, and what someone has to do to obtain the use of witchcraft; you can't help but feel rather disturbed by the film. *When you take into account the fact that this is a movie aimed at a younger audience, how clean the rest of the movie is, and how likable Kiki is...you can't help but wonder what the movie is teaching your children.* B) I have an issue with Kiki's character but since this is a concern that I can't put into words yet I'll put it aside. *In short:* For clarification, I have dealt with actual witches in the past. And I have to tell you that when a group of women routinely sacrifice animals and use their blood to paint glyphs and pentagrams on private property that is the basis for a satanic prayer that prays for the ill-will and literal destruction of you and a group of people you are apart of, your attitude toward witchcraft becomes anything but pleasant. With that image in mind, just what EXACTLY is a movie telling children when you have an extremely likable character that IS a witch and is therefore suggesting that witchcraft is ok? *Overview:* To be clear, I'm not talking about how all these details play in the story of the world that Miyazaki has created; my arguments deal with the underlying message and subtext that each film is conveying as a means to communicate a higher set of messages. To me I see a mind frame that suggests that Miyazaki's outlook on humanity is contemptuous, borderline bitter, and quite violent if you ask me; and while it is true that I have all his films and I like him, I can't help but be apprehensive about the messages he is trying to communicate.

yeah but Ponyo is another great adaption of the story. what saddens me is the amount of people who are legitimatly surprised that Hans Christain Anderson wrote it. but here's another thing I learned that gave me the feels, he wrote it out of unrequitted love. he was in love with a man who rebuked him and married a woman. Hans wrote the story saying his love for the man was like a mermaid in love with a prince.

It's cute and charming and that makes it very likeable. I just prefer all his other films a little bit more. It just goes to show you how great Miyazaki really is at making high quality animated films and even at his weakest, it's still better than a lot of animated films being made today. My personal favourite from him is Laputa: Castle in the Sky. I absolutely adore that film! It's one of my favourite films of all time! :D

Personally I feel NC missed some of the deeper layers in this movie. It seems to me that this is kind of a 'coming of age'-story in combination with the development of a romance that drives the young girl away from her overprotective household, led by a patriarch with an overly agressive dislike of the outside world, and into a life with in-laws who are more risk-driven (get the pun?) yet still caring. Whereas this evolution is primarily driven by more primary needs (ham) it leads to a more profound connection with the boy (by which ultimately the maternal figure makes place) and ultimately with other people including the baby, which may also symbolize her being scared of a possible maternal role in her future life, certainly given her previous lack of loving relationships with others. Yet she overcomes it and makes the baby happy. Still she's being caught up by the identity of her former self, which she can't fully deny. Yet due to Soke's acceptance of that, the turmoil that brought Ponyo in his world is being silenced. Meanwhile Ponyo's father learns thanks to the influence of the mother that he can let go without fully losing her and that she'll be fine after all. The fact that they're five year olds just adds up to the viewers sympathizing with their quest. They're just 'so cute'...

***** I know. To my opinion, the beauty is that... Miyazaki makes it work. Some directors who use such symbolism get lost in a dry, boring, preachy and rather annoying style but in here there's just enough magic and heart in EVERY layer of the story. It's the extent to which a film emotionally captivates you that thrives you to think about it's meaning and well... this one does leave an emotional impact. I don't know why. The characters are rather blant and unrecognizable, yet... there's just something genuine in it that gives me the feels. I guess that's what has made his films into one of these little 'phenomenons' in cinema, but I don't know for sure. After all I just know this movie of his and My Neighbour Totoro. I just guess that most of his films must share this kind of magic knowing that 96% of the Japanese movie goers have recently claimed to have seen at least 1 of his films in the theatre.

I agree with NC. While its not bad, Ponyo isn't as good as other flims by Studio Gibli. While it's better than Howl's Moving Castle, which was a let down imho, it's not as good as My Neighbor Totoro and is no way near as good as Spirted Away. I would even debate that Pokemon 3 is better.
@claraglyn1787 жыл бұрын
I'd honestly put it in the same boat as Totoro (which I didn't love like his others), as in it's cute and charming, but I found it a bit too cute and charming. Seriously though, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises are some of the greatest animated movies of all time.

What I didn't enjoy about Ponyo is that there didn't seem to be a lot to it. A boy meets a fish and fish-daddy doesn't want them together. .... For the most part, that's it. That's also why Totoro isn't my absolute fave. I like the Miyazaki movies that have more plot going on.

Deborah L. like spirited away and how pretty much every little detail near holds a hidden nuance of growing up to face the world and how it may change. -has to work in an onsen to pay parents debt and save them. -has to do anything she is asked as a worker, and after no-face is consumed by human sin he shows lust by 'trying to buy her services' at which her childish mind doesnt piece together and she refuses his mone saying he shouldnt just give it away to strangers, confusing and angering the currently insane yokai. -riding the train herself unsupervised and even keeping no-face out of trouble like a mother to a child. arriety and howls moving castle had a lot going on too, but they're both based on two of miyazaki's beloved britich novels so he had a lot to work with i imagine. to my knowledge spirited away is all his ideas and not from a book. dont quote me on that though.

I still think that the best Miyazaki film I've seen is princess Monoke. It feels a lot more mature darker and complex than movies like Ponyo or Spirited away. Not to say that they aren't good. I have yet to watch Ponyo but Spirited away was alright. As I mentioned before I like Miyazaki's films but I am really not crazy about them. I think one thing they could have done is if they had made Fujimoto's point "Ponyo needs to go home because her magic and misadventures have accidentally created giant fish and caused lots of flooding which is bad," rather than throw in the idea that the moon is somehow getting closer to earth and the world is going to end. I'm surprised that Fujimoto was making a big deal of it though when he sort of wanted mankind to end. Plus Ocean goddess mom seemed to be able to handle it fine. Guess she just wanted reassuring Ponyo would be cared for.
