I must say this project came out to be excellent, far better than I expected! I'm a MAME user myself and have been wanting to start a similar project. To all those planning on building their own, there's three necessities you can't go wrong with for an even better build. 1. install a capable video card for graphics hungry games. 2. lcd or led monitor runs cooler and doesn't take up much space. 3.x-arcade control panel or buttons is a definite must have like the author said.

Excellent job. I just started mine. I got lucky and found a liquidation company that was selling vintage arcade machines for 50 bucks. So that's a good start. However I refuse to compromise with my wife. I am going for the decals and side art. Good name BTW. Right now I'm calling mine the RETROCADE.

Looks good, just remember having that TV inside a confined box with no ventilation, it could burn up your TV, I would recommend taking the back plastic off the TV or add an exhaust fan if you haven't already.

Might do something like this with a desk top arcade machine I picked up. Instead of using the regular tube I might just put a tiny CRT in it. Take out all the wires and motherboards then use the little cabinets built into it as console holders. They cabinets were used to protect or hold in the arcade parts.

Old video, about to build an arcade an arcade so i have been watching several builds to see what ideas i can steal. I plan on making a wall mount using a RP3 and I didn't think about it but the idea of leaving the top hindged for storage was great and i will be using that for additional USB controllers.

AH! I've been wanting to do this for so long! But every single time I almost get completely motivated, I realize the difficulty involved with the actual controls. The buttons. The Joysticks. It all looks so very intimidating and I have no electronic or circuitry knowledge under my belt. I know there's things like the X-Arcade, but I really truly want to put my own touch on my MAME.

Me also, I found out a bar near our neighborhood had a Galaga Machine and went there to play ....of course my parents didn't know and the people at the bar watched over me...Great memories... Very mice and love the all wood cabinet, all for a very reasonable price...Especially considering the Frenzy Machine I bought, cost me about 800$... ;)

I built one back in 2003 that had a 27" Wells Gardner that weighed probably 500lbs and would shock the living hell out of you (even when unplugged). I love the classic look and all but if I'm gonna spend $500+ these days, I'll make a 50" flat screen model and it would still weigh tons less...looks nice!

looks amazing, but your wife should be more supportive and let you make the garage a game room, or man cave. Go with a black cabinet and decal stickers. Still though this was impressive. True arcades have tv's like yours and not flat screens. Well done on the carpentry. Obviously you needed extras like specific power rools, a router, saw horses, and fancy clips. Now she's going to get mad if you play it too much lol......Smh

That's actually a very good first build. You could easily sell it for far more than you spent and build a Mark2 cabinet refining all the original designs using better materials. But then, it wouldn't really play games better, just look better(possibly, again, very nice first build) just a thought.

" You could easily sell it for far more than you spent". Definitely not no, you have to factor in the labour which is at least 95% of the cost.

Nope. I'm married and have an arcade. My wife had no say on it...same way I don't have a say on her purchases...unless we ask for each other's inputs... Which on womanly or manly things won't happen. We feel it's out of place.
@BrandonHann

David Robles My girlfriend and I had this very conversation considering we've talked about marriage and future living arrangements. I'm all for compromising, but that doesn't mean I have to live in a house full of flowery objects and certain color schemes just as much as she doesn't have to live in a house full of neon beer lights and half-naked ladies on the wall. I own two arcade machines and I'd be damned if one of them didn't make to the front room for all the guests and family members to enjoy!

That is so fucking DOPE! I am thinking of building one for myself and I'm in the process now of trying to find building plans for a cabinet and layouts for button mapping with hardware. Your cabinet is by far the best I've seen considering all of the user friendliness. Way to go man. Great build! Too bad about all the commenters giving you hassle for the budget thing though, heh. They're probably not married. Interesting how you built up the interior stand for the TV and then tacked the panels on the outside- I was thinking of doing something very similar, as it would allow me to save money on the build by using an existing table I have.
