good morning, just brought back a memory of me when I went to see this in 1979 in Framingham-Natick, Mass. with my cousin, and how she screamed when Parker knocked Ash's head off with the fire extinguisher (?). I cracked up. lol. great memories of an amazing once-in-a-lifetime movie. Have a great day :)

I first saw Alien when I was 9 years old, i'm 27 now, and even now I am still completely in awe of the Xenomorph creature. The creature itself is disturbingly beautiful, the way it moves is so graceful for such a large creature.

a tall guy wearing a full-body suit designed by H. R. Giger, mechanical devices for the head & mouth close-ups - and it became one of the scariest creatures to be ever seen in a movie. much scarier than the CGI aliens from later movies. thank you Ridley Scott, H. R. Giger & the entire crew for creating such an amazing creature and making such an awesome movie.

He's right, it is scarier if a monster is very close to looking human, but with definite parts that are horrifyingly wrong. This puts the fearsomeness into that which is otherwise very familiar.

H.R. Giger is a very interesting character all by himself. Someone should do a documentary on him. His art transformed the sci-fi genre; look at how many movies have been made based on what he did for the original "Alien." Then there are the many copycat movies and so forth...

Back in 1978 when this movie was being film and a year before theatre release.It would of been great to know if the director says,"lunch break everyone,be back on set in an hour",and the actor in the "alien" costume says,"I'm going to McDonald's for burgers& fries you guys want anything?"(now,imagine the customers expression at that restaurant & no trailers of the movie on tv yet).

I have all of these in my "Director's Cut" version of Alien. Really Ridley explained the "DC" label was for marketing and Fox just wanted to put in some deleted scenes for the Alien DC two disc DVD releases. Veronica Cartwright always was in good spirits during these interviews despite the shit they did to her. The chest burster scene is funny because none of the actors, aside from Hurt, knew what was going to happen, so those reactions are their real, on the spot gut reactions.

I'm not attacking Badejo...he did a fine job, but the limitations of what the FX team could do with the suit at the time were apparent from the documentary. Focusing on the head/mouth and never showing the full xenomorph walking in an upright position was ingenious. And unlike with Spielberg's shark ("Bruce") in Jaws, it wasn't because of technical glitches or malfunctions that the Alien didn't appear more; Scott intuitively knew that "less is more" with horror. That's why he's a genius.

No, At the Mountains of Madness was halted due to rating and budget disputes before plot details of Prometheus were beginning to leak out. It's true Del Toro commented on the plot similarites when the film was released, but his film had already been shelved. It's rather irritating when some spout disinformation all over the place. That's the internet for you though.

Watch The Thing 1982. Then watch The prequel and tell me which one looks more vile and organic. In my opinion cgi should only be used when the object in question is to massive or expensive to build like a transformer or a spaceship like the Prometheus ship in Prometheus. Looks superb.Bits in these sorts of movies that could have been pulled off better with CGI but it should NEVER be overused in a horror movie.

The saddest thing is that they were not using CGI in the 2011 The Thing, it looked beautiful and realistic, until the very last moment, then they decided to replace all with CGI and it looks so fake. They really missed a chance, if you have time look it up, they really did an amazing job.

No problem, just a suggestion ;) Well, if that was the case I wouldn't have any problem with the film, but it is not the case. That's precisely why I encourage you (or whatever is the correct word in english) to read it. There is no influence, it is a direct copy and paste, even in scenes where it would not make sense, like with the mummy head. In fact, Guillermo del Toro was making an adaptation of "At the mountains..." and had to stop when he learnt about Prometheus. I hope he'll continue it.

Nachos XD The SJ was a symbol of an inhuman lovecraftian intelligence from a region so different that it's inhabitants were... just alien to our concepts of morality. A symbol of the oddness of a universe that doesn't care about our beliefs, where humans were ignorant and insignificant; now it's a symbol of humanity and their beliefs (creators) as the center of the universe. I would have liked the new concept if it wasn't just a human god in a Cthulhu suit. Just treason, in my humble oppinion.

Unbelieveable. didn't you read the 'making of' book? I'll find you a link. How much sweat do you lose under the hot studio lights when animating your CG beast? How many retakes do you have to make? do you have to deal with skin irritations from your materials? yopu don't have any experience with any of this.
@Titusatreides
@Titusatreides 12 жыл бұрын
Well, the great Cthulhu is more or less the result of crossing a schrimp and an octopus, mainly because Lovecraft himself disliked ANYTHING that would come out of the sea. Deep ones are also part of this sea-like hate. Having said this, i too expected more "mythos" in Cloverfield. Nevertheless it could be listed in a "mythos lore" movies list. I mean, the monster of cloverfield could very well be an stellar spawn of some kind of Old One. Could'nt it?
@Khrixos
@Khrixos 12 жыл бұрын
Actually, it does. Nothing that can ever be done on a computer is going to match the difficulty of stop motion animating a rubber and wire creature on a table and making it work. There's no UNDO button, for one thing. Just a month's animation down the tubes if you screw up. And the movies with the best SFX start with a practical effect and enhance it with CG anyway. But let's just drop it, we aren't going to agree. Enjoy the movies.

Ridley Scott said once, he prefers the "sensible" option of real craft instead of CGI because when the actors act and interact with CGI and have been put in to a green or interact with things in various ways, they're basically guessing. So, during post production when the film need to be seamlessly edited together it ends up costing more money going back to correct the mistakes/fault than if you had just started using the physical thing/environment in the first place.

It was the first jandra that had union space workers that might have been city workers from New York. It was the first honest idea about how people might be able to work in space. The dark overlay was how the employer, Weyland Yutani might want to obtain the find at whatever the cost, and the story that this level corporate greed might be the most dangerous way to treat an organism like the Alien. The wrong kind of organism could wipe out your whole population in a very horrible way.
@Virgil077

True. But partly because directors simply didn't attempt what couldn't be done with CGI or they did but it simply didn't look as convincing. Take the full body shots of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park for example, just in terms of the animations they look better then what the go motion dinosaurs would've looked like. Or look at the T-1000 in Terminator 2, Draco from Dragon heart or the pseudopod in The Abyss, i don't think those would've looked as good as they did with traditional methods.

I know practical effects are more difficult than CG effects. Look at hollywood - no shortage of CG artists. Why? How many stop motion animators/monster makers can you name? I do CG and practical effects - and animation. Knowing materials for a rubber monster is essential -it is not as simple as saying 'latex'. You also have to know what to use for the molds, and so on. Obviously, we are both passionate about special effects, which can only be a good thing. Keep it civil? CG has won the field!

There is hate against Prometheus, yes, but please note there are also many well explained reviews that just show the flaws of the film. There's no need for hate, the movie can be criticised using logic and observation. I specially recommend the article called "100 glaring logical issues with Prometheus". And don't forget the people who didn't like the film because of the new Space Jockey. You know, some wanted an alien/extraterrestrial, after 30 years of good comics about elefantine aliens.

What's with the Promethius hate? It opens the Alien movies! In the first one, they reach the mining planet because of a distress call. In the end of Promethius, the first Xenomorph comes as a mix of the giant facehugger and the Engineer. The distress call was made at the end of the movie. Just my opinion, but Promethius was an amazing prequel to Alien.
