Or the 10 Things I Hate About You moments, with the friend (can't remember his name) naming all the things he loves about Janey and it's just weird and creepy and of course the Janey's Got A Gun scene! Both were so well done that I mix up things that happened in parody and think it was the original. Still do that to this day when I try to think back to these movies.
@vernicegirl89872 жыл бұрын
They did well because they actually watched the movies they were parodying while having an actual story line. Scary Movie legit had a mystery serial killer they had to solve, it was just set in a universe that made fun of teen slasher film tropes. NATM managed to have all the tropes tie into the story in a comedic way and managed to somewhat subvert expectations and every joke had a payoff by the end of the movie. All the other parody films just copied scenes from other films and didn’t put any effort in it whatsoever. I will say though that Date Movie is one of my guilty pleasures and I will defend it to the end 😂😂

Perks is still great to me as a 'teen' movie, but there was some really hard hitting content in the book that they either toned down or just completely omitted for the film so that they could IMO fit the nostalgic teen movie archetype more, just with their own twist. I think i understand their angle and it did 'work' but, knowing what could have been kills me.

Agreed. Felt the same way about the film adaptation of "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl". The film was very well done and enjoyable, but could not compare to the emotional impact of the original book. It's so straightforward and unsentimental and brutal in a way that most adult fiction never gets close to being, let alone YA content. I understand why they didn't include it in the film but I felt a little cheated when they went with a more feel-good approach
@reikun862 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean. I think Perks is an important book, and I thought the movie was made with love, but I know some of the stuff you're talking about was left out to make it more palatable for teen movie-goers. If I remember correctly, it was Emily Watson's first film outside of the Harry Potter films, so I can see the studios deciding to tone it down to get butts in the seats. Which is an interesting move, because Harry Potter dealt with death, depression, anger, racism, and genocide. Those themes are not exactly fluffy.

I've wondered for so long why more of those high-school based movies with super adult themes aren't just made about young adults. like I get maybe they're trying to capitalize on a high-school age audience, but I'd argue the college/post-grad market is bigger and has more money/time to spend anyway. plus it does feel kinda weird being in your early/mid twenties and watching tv and movies about high schoolers. I reckon most of us would rather not have to relive high school every time we wanna watch a good drama like euphoria or elite, and I agree w you that I'd much rather watch something I can relate to as a twenty-something, trying to find my purpose, make a living, get my life together, build relationships outside of school, etc. I know there are already excellent shows like that (girls, insecure, broad city to name a few) but I just feel those storylines are so much deeper and interesting to explore, and way more rooted in reality than a bunch of 16-year-olds committing murder, taking drugs, drinking in clubs as if there isn't an age limit, etc (also can we pls stop romanticizing that lifestyle for teenagers? thanks) on a separate note I rewatched this movie like a year ago for the first time in a decade and totally forgot chris evans was in it. 100% agree he thrives with comedies

Thank you for recognizing the brilliance of this film. It really did hit on so many of the teen movie troupes perfectly. Definitely not perfect, but soo much better than these recent parody characters. Thanks for this send up!💕

I remember going to watch this in cinemas. Twice. It was funny as hell. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years! Man I feel old.

1:44 also great mockumentary. I’m not saying we haven’t met it’s equal, only that’s it good. Though my favorite is Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Yes! I remember seeing “Scary Movie” and “Not Another Teen Movie” and thinking that both were smart, funny satires of the movies that inspired them. They just got lumped in with the terrible parody films that came later.

The reference to “Saved” was just the PERFECT ending to this movie!!! I am dying for someone to make a commentary video on that movie, it was my favorite in HS and the one I related to most!!!

My favorite moment in saved is when Mary goes into labor and the boys try to go into the ambulance and only one can go so they go “ I’m the father , I’m the boyfriend , I’m his boyfriend (refers to the father)

I try to not comment on all of your videos because I know women have to deal with a bunch of gross stuff online and I never want to be a cause for concern, but I sincerely love the content you produce and am grateful that you’ve chosen to share your education and perspectives with the internet.

@Amanda Hall or maybe just comment to talk about the actual video instead of about the author.
@JebeckyGranjola2 жыл бұрын
@Amanda Hall I wasn't exactly contradicting you, but I think there is a difference between discussing the content of a work and complimenting an Author on thier work- It's still kind of talking about the Author, then. Right?

i watched NATM for the first time only a few years ago (i think after it was mentioned in a lindsay ellis video) and yeah, it really holds up even on a first viewing in the mid-2010s IMO

I just watched this last night for the first time in a really long time and I gotta say I was very surprised by how genuinely hilarious it was. I definitely didn't "get" it when I was 12-13 and was watching it for the first time, but now as an adult in my 30s it blew my mind how genuinely smart a lot of the movie was.

I remember being as fond of this movie as I am of the first Scary Movie. Thanks for reminding me of the good bits without me having to revisit all of the extremely likely poorly aged jokes. I'll take my memory of Marilyn Manson playing the main theme as the most concerning 'con' and be done with it.

Black Dynamite is another great parody movie, this one of the Blackploitation genre, and it's GENIUS. i think it's one of those that should be up there with Airplane and Scary Movie but it's severely underrated.

Everytime I see a slow clap scene I always remember the joke about the guy trying to start a slow clap and it never catched on, then at the end of the movie, the right time comes and as the guy is going to star the slow clap, SOMEONE ELSE DOES IT FIRST!!!! He goes bersek and attacks that guy. Just remembering it kills me

Ok so I am very late to your channel and have been going through your videos and I love that you talked about this movie! I have said that NATM is the last great parody and the Token Black Guy part always gets me. Especially later when Chris Evans actually acknowledges that the character is never given fair respect but then also runs off and leaves him. Its so good. Thank you!

i’ve said this before!!!! there are not enough movies/television abt what it feels like to be 19-24 that arent based on college/school, hella ppl dont even go to school i wanna learn abt THAT pls do a video on that
@kellynn7392 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see something like that too. But if we do have to talk about schooling, I'd love to see something about someone going to or graduated from community college or trade school. The whole "getting into a good college" and having "the college experience" trope is annoying. I think Community is the only show addressing this, but it'd be nice to see more characters in a trade or health career rather than a glamorized office job or yet another drama about doctors (medical assistants and CNAs can have interesting storylines too if you let them!)

I'm so happy you made this video after mentioning it in one of your other videos. I also started watching NATM at a young age on Comedy Central, and I have enjoyed it ever since! As someone who has worn glasses all of their life, the scenes where they would make fun of She's All That (a movie I've always disliked because of the "ugly girl makeover" trope) gives me great delight to know not everyone actually believes glasses and ponytails makes someone ugly, especially if the actress is naturally pretty! Anyways, love your videos.
