I might suggest using your first attempts with the groove, but breaking initial tinder into smaller finer particles: dried leaves crumbled finely. Put them directly onto the rubbing area while smothering with larger tinder, then smother more with your hat perhaps. The idea is to hold in the heat generated through friction to concentrate it. In the open air the heat can dissipate too fast. Their should be enough air to get smoldering going, then when you pull the hat away to keep it from becoming part of what's burning, do so gently but briskly to suck air up through the smoldering tinder, fire should start so be ready with more tinder and small kindling. Then you can start adding larger kindling and eventually logs.

I’m watching this and thinking about canoes because I’m so sure that the bottom piece moving is a problem… so I think it should be mostly buried. Then I think maybe humans used to use fallen trees that are too heavy to wiggle.. then I think, after years it would hollow the tree and maybe that’s how canoes came to be… does that make sense?
