Finally, someone stands up for the most underrated and understated of all Mercedes series! The OM616.916 240D is the best diesel /8 to own, especially in manual guise. It's an incredibly reliable car that handles better than any of the other models Pierre mentions as comparisons. Most people don't know that it revs to over 5400 rpms only in the W115, all while delivering well over 30 mpg! :)

Couldn’t agree more. I owned a 114 280 as my daily driver and it is a fabulous car to live with. I own a 108 and 107 and the 114 was a much better drive than the 108. Spacious and classy - one of the best value for money classics today.

As they say, Mercedes W114/115 series assembly line started with the blower motor hanging from the factory ceiling and then they added parts to build the car from there.

Theo, you’re right. They are seen a bit more often, and as good examples. That being said, most of Europe (Greece particularly) has a fantastic climate for cars. Dry heat, minimal snow, and no salt on roads. The north eastern US was a killer to these cars. Even south in Florida, I come across them, and they tend to be rotten (rusty).

Once again, great video! I had a chance about 20 years ago to buy a 1970 220D, four-speed manual. Looked great. I drove it, and it drove just fine. Sounded good, the whole bit. $700. I've kicked myself for a long time for not buying that car!!! It would be so cool to have one today! Thanks for your video. We enjoy them all!

My father had one of the first 220D's in Chicago. He had a 35 mile one way commute in southern Chicago suburbs. When he heard they were were being replaced he got one of the last available 240D's in the Chicago area in late '74. That was the car I learned to drive on. (Think ahead plan your merging, and pay attention) that one was destroyed by a teenage neighbor who ran into it with a Ford stationwagon.

Pierre, it is an absolute pleasure to listen to your knowledge and passion. I am new to older Mercedes and you are inspiring. I was looking for a 123 and while looking at one actually stumbled onto a 115. In this case a 1969 220D. It is remarkably rust free and Signal Red, and for me being a manual was a big plus. Motor mount(s) are collapsed, but the car started and runs fine albeit in need of service. The car cleaned up very well and I have ordered mounts and will go from there. I'm not sure what happened, and I'm sure I paid more than I should have, but the car and I connected, and I really love good bodies as I cannot do paint or body. Basically the car needed to be saved and I am going to do it. Thanks for your tremendous resource, I have already learned much.

Pierre, I think you answered all of your questions in your opening statements. Rust here, rust there, there is rust everywhere, roofs are OK, interiors are not that great, plus the amount of work you have to do to rebuild the front suspension, etc. The Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 was the mid-sized saloon model for Mercedes, positioned below the S-Class. Could of should of with the 3.5 engine but they didn't.

That's me, lol! I bought a W11T '74 240D in high school when I was 18. I'm now 24 and it still doesn't run and still working on it. I swapped a floor from another parts car and it's now completely rust free. I put on new doors last month. It needs a new paint job, the motor mounts are falling apart, brakes are shot, and needs a new wiring harness. It certainly is a money pit.

I had two of these 15 years ago and even in Australia they rusted and badly as badly as Alfa Romeos, mainly in the firewall. Both of mine had these and I could not get these repaired without an engineering certificate in this country. As a result the cost of ownership at the time was beyond me so I flipped both for a 123.

A buddy of mine in Michigan has been a longtime owner of a couple of 114s, coupè & sedan, the latter he bought new. He has kept them original, with the exception of adding Dynamat to the coupè, which really quieted the interior at highway speed (the original rear end). Roomy interiors and spacious trunks. He agrees that the /8 doesn’t get the love of the R107 or other two-seaters. He’ll never sell them cause they’re like family.

W114/115s don’t get love for the same reason early 123s don’t get love: they lack the turbo diesel engine. That’s the only thing stupid people look for in an older benz. First thing you hear them ask (with a very dumb voice): “Is it a turbo?”, No, “Oh I was looking for a turbo”. That or “Can I add a Turbo to a 240D?” They make me sick. They don’t appreciate any virtue of a classic Mercedes. All they want is a turbodiesel car because they think is going to be economical, fast and won’t require any care. I don’t know why they don’t get a Peugeot instead. Nobody cares if a car of that brand gets trashed.

I love my 1970 w114. Threw the rod in it on father's day and trying to decide what to do motor wise. I have a 1jz and transmission sitting at a friend's shop, so I might just go that route. I know the purest hate that type of thing, but to each there own. I also own a 1972 BMW 2002 and the BMW purest are pretty crazy also. Some may say that doing such a swap ruins the car, but I actually saved the car from the previous owner that was just leaving it to rot on the side of the house. I still may rebuild the original motor, but the cost to rebuild it just doesn't make sense, when I also have to fix the transmission. The w114 and w115 are very underrated, and as much as I love stock, a modified w114/w115 just looks great just as well.

I’m currently bringing a W115 back from the dead. It started out bad. The dealer in Texas that I purchased it from lied about everything. He said it ran and it had no rust which was BS. Fortunately for me the rust is contained to the floorboards. I have purchased new factory style floors panels. I purchased a used engine that is supposedly good but I’ve been lied to for everything I’ve purchased so who knows if it’s good. I’ve gone through the cluster and restored it completely. I’m waiting for the clock to come back from the repair shop. You’ll be happy to know it’s going back bone stock down to the painted hubcaps. It’s a 1968 model blue with non headrest gray interior. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Question. I am Putting together a W114 250C project. The original engine has not ran in over a decade and the car needs a complete interior but the body is completely rust free. So I am going to put a low mileage M113 engine out of a CL500 and a manual transmission in the car and keep the original engine and transmission. My question is: which manual transmission would be the best choice ?

I love the w114/115 more than the W123. They look way cooler and in my opinion are easier to work on. The big problem, as much as I love them, is they are rust out really badly. My 1975 has so much rust I did a lot of work to it and haven’t gotten around to finishing it. Rusted trunk floor, fenders, rockers, floors, rear subframe, and rear quarter panels

We recently rescued a 1974 240D that had a sawzall taken around the engine to put in a 2JZ motor... Has barely any rust because it was from down south except for the sunroof and the rear trunk, which I cut out. I'm slowly putting it back together but am missing some key parts to get it running. Air filter housing Vacuum hose from pump to master cylinder Idle adjustment screw/nut from the cable Throttle cable Shift link between auto transmission and shifter Just to name a few... Been searching like crazy but even salvage yards that have a complete engine bay won't allow pick and pull and are 200 miles away... Any help? The interior is a mess and I hope to tackle that later (seats are shot, dash is cracked, some electrical issues)

I had a 1969 250 which barely survived the ravages of my brother driving it. In the end, the rust is what terminated my ownership, though it did go on to somebody else who intended to restore it. It was a damn good car despite the rust, and I have to admit one of the ugliest Mercedes ever. I still want a 250c or 280c though. I especially miss the old Becker Europa radio.

Out here in Australia, the exception is the 280E and coupe models that are both valuable and highly desirable. I don't think you got models like the 280E, 250CE and 280CE models like we did. With 185hp on tap, the 280E has much better performance than the W123 as our smog laws started in 1976, and the 123s have about 150-160hp. I agree that the more pedestrian models like a 230.4 for example have minimal value. This is the same as a W123 230 carby though. It is sad to see so many slammed and bagged, mostly poor old 250 or 230 models.

ah yes the rust is horrible. i bought a 1974 240d last year with barely any visible rust. i thought i could daily drive it and after just one salty Pennsylvanian winter the rear floor was completely gone. i think the problem was the thick shutchz undercoating they used. it trapped in moisture. and also alot of those cars have leaky window gaskets that lets water in rusting them from the inside out. im currently in the process of fixing the rust on my car.

I own both, a 76 240d (W115) 4 speed and a 84 300d (W123) Automatic. If you live in an air-conditioning heavy country/ state, then you're partially correct. The air conditioning system in the W115 is more complicated of an installation and the blower fan is not as easy to replace when it fails (which it will eventually). If you want to keep the system original, then it can be a pain to repair. Once sorted property, both will last a long time. In every other way, the W115 is a much easier car to own. It handles better, rides like a sports saloon, revs higher and is even more economical despite being powered by an older version of the same motor. I enjoy my W123 but I really look forward to driving my W115.

Though these cars were somewhat innovative, their build quality as compared to the W108/109 and especially the subsequent W123 was lacking...To me, its a malaise period for Mercedes...
