Deep cleaning and repair of an 1863 Springfield. This reproduction rifled musket had not been used for 20 years and was newly passed to a new Civil War reenactor who was anxious to get his musket in firing condition.
See part 2 of this video where we attempt to fire this rifled musket (with a blank) -- will it still fire?
Part 1: (this video) • Not fired in 20 years ...
Part 2: Will it Fire? First Shot in 20 Years • Will it Fire? First S...

Thank you, gentlemen. I just got hold of a well used 1861 Springfield that needs some love. This helped me figure how to get ready for action in July!

sorry pard for the very delayed response. Any update on you getting your new to you Springfield operational? Was this an original piece or a repro that was neglected?

Great video. I've only shot my 1863 a couple times but couldn't hurt to take it all apart like you showed. I noticed boiling water removed a ton more stuff than just cleaning with balistol at the range.

any chance your 1863 is an original? its more than running hot water - the cleaning patch will "rub" against the barrel to work out the black powder. Welcome to the channel pard - happy to have you follow along with our adventures.

Good video! I'm in the middle of getting a Charleville 1777 AN IX back in working condition. Today the main spring, sear, and butt plate arrived, a replacement breech plug will arrive in a day or two. It is a percussion conversion with an 1835 dated barrel, the breech plug is dated 1833 so there's a good chance it will fit. I hope. Somewhere in my garage is a brake cylinder hone, if I can find it, and it fits into the .69 caliber bore, it will expedite cleaning the rusted bore. A lot of work but I only paid $50 for the musket.

What wax did you use Johnson paste wax? I have the Renaissance wax that the museums use would the Johnson stuff be better? What was used to keep the barrel from rusting?

The wax will keep the outside of the barrel from rusting, I like to use Remington oil on the inside. Hard to say what wax is better, welcome others input. Thanks 72GMC for the comment --LT

Just bought a defarbed armi sport from gunbroker and looks awesome but… barrel has slight rust and needs a cleaning any recommendations on getting any barrel rust out? What caliber bore brush do you think you’d recommend?
@1stminnsharpshooters341
@1stminnsharpshooters341 2 жыл бұрын
for light rust; I would try a a nylon cleaning brush then if it needed more removal move to a brass brush. See cleaning brushes on www.fcsutler.com/fcfirearmaccessories.asp. Welcome others recommendations

This is very helpful, I’m look at getting a 1863 model Springfield, but the current owner does not recall the last time it been fired. Any tips to make sure it’s safe?
@1stminnsharpshooters341
@1stminnsharpshooters341 Жыл бұрын
Few suggestions from me: welcome others tips. 1) have it checked out by someone that knows pieces in this condition. 2) good general cleaning (looking for major defects) 3) fire a few caps only first - point the barrel at a leaf or grass on the ground -- leaf/grass should move noticeable - if not the barrel is obstructed - this need to be addressed. Good luck pard! we have a LOT of backpowder shotte'en on this channel

@@1stminnsharpshooters341 I had a follow up question if you don’t mind. As I am new to collecting and do not know anyone who owns old firearms, your insight is greatly appreciated. I am looking to close the deal on the rifle, but noticed a small indent in the metal, almost directly across from the nipple. Is this concerning? The indent is shallow, but maybe 4mm wide. Otherwise the rifle is in great shape so I hope to get it firing but safety is my primary concern.

Welcome Steve to the hobby. Your have to look around for a used one ... if your a member of a group you can ask them (and for their sources). Of course you could purchase online - you mentioned used. Selling firearms is tricky on the Internet for Facebook so perhaps gun broker would work. good luck and sending you a personal invite to follow(subscribe to) our group on youtube -- see you on the field or around the camp fire -- LT

@1stminnsharpshooters341

@@Whitpusmc Several of our members have Original muskets. A first step a gun this old is to get a professional level evaluation on if its safe to fire. If not, then it can make a great "wall hanger". Of the original I've seen with reenactors they are used for special occasions like memorial day parades and would only fire blanks. I can't go deep into your question on gunsmithing to maintain an original piece - but would invite you to post this question to our group at : facebook.com/1St.Minn.Sharpshooters

He Dear... Can you talk to me in your free time? I have some necessary questions as I am going through the stage of building a rifle for my 75-year-old grandfather He is a fan of musket rifles, but unfortunately, this type of rifle is not found in our country, so I decided to make it myself. And I brought English walnut, wood treatment materials, iron oxidation materials, glaze materials, and everything And I followed several clips on KZfaq of the makers of musket rifles (gunsmith vid ) I faced only one problem, is closing the back of the barrel, so I searched the Internet for ways to close the barrel. I found the breech plug method, but I searched more about closing the barrel with a breech plug. Unfortunately, I found many forums warning against this method, and some say 200 shots max And this thing made me feel bad about designing the rifle for my grandfather, so I stopped working To sum up all of my words - is closing the barrel with a (breech plug) safe and reliable? I am very afraid, please help me, I am very hesitant and I apologize for the long wait and thank you in advance
