As GenX, I will state that "mental health" is defined by society in general, and the government in particular. Who TF thinks THOSE people are "mentally healthy"?

I've been working in psychology and mental health since the mid 1990s and it is what my degree is in, and I can share something one of my professors told our class going back near 30 years ago. He said, if you ever come across somebody that has none of the diagnostic criteria discussed throughout the DSM, beware, because that person is really f*%#!d up. Everyone laughed because we all just brushed it off as a joke and something to keep the class involved, but after decades of experience now, let me tell you he was 100% correct. It isn't talked about anymore, due to multiple revisions in the DSM, but one of the best indicators of good mental health skills is something called the global assessment of functioning (GAF). It used to be in the Axis V of the the older DSM. It is a scale from 0 to 100, blocked off in sections, about how a person deals with various and multiple crises. In my experience, people who have high GAF scores, are where you can find most of the types of people to look for as "standards" of what she would consider "mentally healthy."

@lisalee9182 should save some time and be more direct than having to do a bunch of research if anyone is more interested in learning more. The newest DMS did away with the multi-axis system of diagnosing, which I don't personally like or think was a good idea, but whatever.

My question is Do you ever address the deep spiritual aspect of mental health ? Or do you just read the books ?
@user-jy2vd2em6vАй бұрын
So basically how you deal with everyday life and the shit it throws at you. That’s something that needs to be brought back and to teach people how to be a lot tougher than they are now. There’s only one person that’s in charge of your brain and that’s you, you do not let your brain control you cause then you’re fucked.
@pandapower307629 күн бұрын
@robertsice6704 I don't think that's relevant to the conversation at hand. And the person said they've been working in the field since the mid 90's so I think they've done more than "just read books."

I know this is going to hurt some people’s feelings. So far with the couple of years of therapy from a bad, really bad mental shutdown, I have noticed that a very high percentage of doctors, and therapists actually are in the field because they themselves had or have something (or a loved one) that can be labeled in that special book.

DSM is about statistical significance. Any human has the capacity to have to some degree, any symptom in the DSM. That is what makes them content valid. If there was a subset of humans who were immune to a certain symptom, then that symptom would be statistically invalid. Many of the DSM symptoms are structured to be somewhat measurable and those that are not are discrete, meaning even if you ha e a little of it; you qualify. To qualify for a diagnosis, you must have a certain specified number of the symptoms for a particular disorder as judged by an assessor. Some of whom are poorly skilled due to the degradation of training these days. And as far as being overtaken and enamored with social media, there is no age qualifier for teenager, and no diagnostic category for gullible.

Well what DSM do you want? Because the 5th edition was made to make everyone in need of treatment. I mean smoking is in the DSM-5 (305.1). And we will never see a DSM-6 because the 5 just gets changed and how dare you hold onto that 2013 physical version! Only the internet version is correct and you must check it every time to make sure you’re not “remembering things wrong”
