Not one, but two Hyundai Equus(es?) (2021)

While driving up the 101 freeway on a quiet Sunday morning in LA county, I was surprised to see not one, but two 2nd gen Hyundai Equus(es?) gracefully riding in tandem. With less than 18,000 units sold in the US over the course of 6 years, it was a pretty rare and cool sight to see these two upscale KDM specimens in the wild. Long live the Hyundai Equus! (recorded on the 25th of April 2021)

If y'all don't know the Equus wasn't really discontinued they just renamed it as the G90 and made it part of the Genesis' lineup

Not really because in 2017 they made the Equus and the G90. I think they still make the Equus for other markets.

@@t3true-games wrong baby wrong, check it out on Wikipedia, the Equus was only made from 2009 til 2016 in North America, and 1999-2016 in the Asian market (cuz the 1st generation Equus wasn't on sale in NA) Then in 2017 the G90 came out which is basically the 3rd generation of the Equus

They never made the equus & G90 & the same time, the 2017 G90 has ques from the 2016 equus, back lights, back seat set up & a few other similar amenities, here in the USA anyways, I researched this thoroughly. The equus has been rebadge to the G90, there is no 2017 equus.

I have a 2015 Equus and I love this car. The ride is so smooth and handles like a dream. I have had no issues what so ever with my car. Also with the 5.0 engine if I want to drop the hammer it really gets down. I love it when other cars try to show off and I blow their doors off. Then they pull back up and say what is that thing? Then I tell them they just lost to a Hyundai and laugh.

@@jennifermartinez8959 Enjoy. I’ve had mine for a few weeks now, so I’ve learned a few things that I can tell you. Mine is the ultimate version, but since I’m rarely ever going to have backseat passengers, I can technically live without the rear entertainment/ac features, the power sunshades, and the cooled seats. They are fun “party tricks” though, as I like to call them. I do like the soft close doors, but since the doors are so light, the car doesn’t really need them. The one thing I like that the ultimate has vs the signature is the heads up display. I got used to having a digital speedometer readout in my last car (it had analog gauges), so I like that. The things I’ve learned are 1. Use regular gas. You lose 8 hp, 429 vs 421, but I can’t imagine one would notice the power difference, & the savings on your wallet (since the fuel economy isn’t great) are tremendous. 2. The Hyundai app is not compatible with the Equus anymore, even though the app has features that you’d think would still work (remote start, car locator, service history). Maybe there’s an aftermarket app that can do these things, it just won’t be Hyundai branded. 3. The carpet floor mats are discontinued from Hyundai, but I think I found a site that sells them. I need a drivers front carpet mat, & I think I might have to buy a full set to get just the one. 4. There is a compact spare tire, despite my local dealer saying no. If yours doesn’t come with one, like mine didn’t, you’ll have to find it online. I’ve yet to purchase one, since I don’t know how I can get it delivered (live in apartment). The dealer recommended against run flat tires, so I’d get the spare, cuz having to tow the car if you get a flat that can’t be easily fixed, it’s no fun. 5. I got a 2 yr warranty w/my car. Even though it’s a Korean car that’s reliable, get one aftermarket, if the dealer won’t sell you one. My driver seat needed a motor, & the dealer is gonna fix it for free. Also, my driver side mirror won’t fold, & seeing as I work at a dealer, they’re gonna try to fix it for me w/a $9 part. This vs $2k that the dealer wanted to charge. I don’t think there’s a setting so the mirrors won’t fold, & the dealer said eventually the mirror will be floppy/loose. Not sure if that meant the mirror could stay in the open position though. I’m gonna get the accessory hood ornament, to replace the Equus logo badge, but I’d say not to get it, if you don’t want to draw more attention to your car. Enjoy your Equus. I love talking about it, so if you do as well, or if you have any questions, reply here, or dm on X or ig if you’re on there. @adamthphynes on X, & @athp on ig.

Two guesses: one, they're rented for a movie. They have cinema vehicle rental places in LA that have tons of cars for movies and they have lists of people that are willing to rent out their car. This could be for something set in Korea. Two, Hyundai Motor America is in Fountain Valley and they needed somebody's car back for testing. Manufacturers are required to borrow back used cars and do testing on them to make sure that emissions systems aren't prematurely wearing out. They swap it with a loaner. This is very common around Detroit.

@@FabienTeulieres93 agreed. Well said. It's a looker! I love seeing them on the road. I think the first gen genesis looks nice in black too, with the 2012-2014 headlights with that S strand of LEDs running through it. Just wish Hyundai hadn't cheaped out on the DRL and fog lights. Halogens?? C'mon! Lol. The 5.0 is a great engine. I don't like Hyundai's 8 speed though. They seem to be proud of it! Ha. It's not smooth at all. My car just bombs through the gears and will do sudden power surges at gear changes sometimes that really jolts the car. Very scary. Wish Hyundai would do a 10 speed like ford with the 5.0 and maybe bump the power up to 450. The 2015 or newer Equus with the ultimate package is really impressive with all the goodies it comes with. It's hard to beat the bang for the buck they give you. The ls460 is nice and so is an S-class but you're paying way more and the Equus honestly has all the features if not more for 1/2 the price

I have a 2012 Equus Ultimate (very rare), they are luxury cars and rare ones so the cost to repair and maintain is a bit higher than normal. The Hyundai dealer here was stunned when I brought it in for front suspension replacement after hitting a massive pothole at night, they have never seen one in person before. Even when it was new. BTW not many people will work on the suspension system in this car and treat it as if its an exotic. Hyundai wanted $9k to replace just the two front struts. This is something to keep in mind. Or spend $2k or so to replace it with a standard spring kit, but then you are taking away one of the special things about the car. Owning this car has been amazing. One of the coolest cars I have ever owned and I have owned many (and exotics). Its wonderful, but if you do your research and understand that while it IS a very reliable car, when things go bad it will be more expensive to fix because it is rare AND originally an expensive car. Definitely not the same as buying some Civic part at Napa Autoparts, but if you are okay with that - yes, totally awesome. The fridge and full reclining seat in the back stuns people who see it the first time without fail.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Richard. Very sorry about what you are currently going through. It sounds like your Equus has turned into a money pit unfortunately. Regarding your faulty (and expensive) suspension system, it might be worth looking into an “air suspension delete” i.e a coil-over or classic coil-and-damper conversion. Strutmasters (a well known car part company) sells a conversion kit for all 2011-16 Equus that will save you thousands of dollars and fix the problem permanently.

Regarding the fuel line, maybe you can seal it with a neoprene glue or a silicone compound that’s compatible with fuel… I haven’t researched that kind of issue, so don’t quote me on that but if the remainder of your fuel line is ok and only that short section is leaking, a hack like that on that very section might be worth it to seal it and make the car usable again.
@FabienTeulieres93
@FabienTeulieres93 2 жыл бұрын
Finally, as far as the engine goes, yes that’s a tough one. I’ve read that the 2014 (and up) 5.0 V8 engines were more reliable and less prone to scoring and piston rings issues… so hopefully you got a good replacement one installed for another 150,000 miles or more. But unfortunately, besides using good oil and topping off fluids, there’s not much consumers can do about it since that premature wear problem is obviously Hyundai‘s fault 🤷‍♂️
