I notice that the engine speed dies away very quickly as the braking force increases. Is it possible to change the rate of braking increase? This might allow the engine to sit at the peak for longer, giving more reliable readings, and also give the engine time to recover at lower revs without stalling.

Alex, you're reaching the point where you might want to investigate some datalogging options. Seeing peak crankcase pressures would be really interesting and I think would help you dial in your rotary valve timing. And with that, I think a precise and repeatable adjustment mechanism for the rotary valve also seems like a no-brainer at this point now. Keep it up!
@ferrumignis

100% agree, datalog as much as possible. Experience is great but only gets you so far when diving into a new an unproven design. Some method of logging parameters like crankcase pressure against crank angle would be ideal.

Engineer here that works on combustion Engines: Maybe the engine dies under slight load at low rpm because your ignition is too advanced. A flat timing curve is not a good idea, try to at least ramp it up over rpm by using some standard flame speeds in combustion engines to determine the slope of the curve. This wont be perfect at all, but it will be way better than a flat line over a range of nearly 8k rpm.
@chi-kylemotorwork1198
@chi-kylemotorwork1198 2 жыл бұрын
I could see that too.. The mapping ignition is flat.. A curve end would be beneficial to the engine as it rotates faster, a slightly retard ignition on the end would make ignition happens faster and potentially 'knocking'will occur thus limiting rotation or might cause blow up of an engine..

Love your channel! You can think of running shorter intake duration which will reduce the risk of backfire, since you are able to run higher boost pressure, therefore you can hold the cylinder charge amount constant! When intake durations are low enough and charge pressure will be high enough, the engine should perform well without the intake reeds! Try it - break it -repeat it!

@jplxlabelle1681
@jplxlabelle1681 2 жыл бұрын
The reed problem can be overcome by stacking reeds. Carbon with a titanium reed that’s undersized and installed directly on the carbon. Vintage two stroke have problems with “flutter”, causing the reeds to not slam closed completely. It has much to do with turbulence, and the fact that people didn’t understand what was happening at 100K frames per second. This is why we have “ Reed blocks “, it backs the tips of the reeds out of the turbulence, allowing them to seat slightly better, but not perfect. This is why we started using a layer of titanium/steel. Order some reeds from a Quadzilla and cut them to size. They are as robust as you’ll be needing. But layering allows the reeds to operate properly at low speeds even though they still work at mind-bending rpm. Though it does give you more crap to find when you detonate.

I don't know if it's still produced, but i bought the Stage6 Carbon reeds in combination with their full aluminium cage for multiple projects and they never failed me. I used them with the then legendary 2Fast 94cm³ kit for 50cc scooters and one thing i constantly noticed when upgrading from factory or metal reeds to carbon is that the responsiveness of the engine improved, since the carbon ones weren't as heavy and could therefore open and close faster, even with smaller amounts of air-fuel mixture coming in.

For mounting pulleys to the shafts look at Trantorque bushings. Or, if there is not room, copy the taperlock idea at a smaller scale. Great progress! However, as much as I'd love to believe you're getting potentially 30 horsepower from 50cc capacity (boosted or not) it's a big pill to swallow. You need to take an engine with known output and test it on your dyno to make sure your dyno is accurate. It would be a shame to find out your 30 horsepower is only 15 or something.
@T3ddyRuxp1n
@T3ddyRuxp1n 2 жыл бұрын
While you are not wrong on the need to verify the dyno operation it would be rare for an engine to produce exactly the horsepower that it is rated for as atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity would all play a role. So best case scenario is that testing a known engine would only confirm that the dyno is ballpark correct. On the flip side of the argument, the dyno load cell and software is known science. He has set it up and done the math. This isn't new technology and I think he's set it up right. My money is on the 30HP although it would be nice to have confirmation, 3rd party dyno after installed in the landspeed bike!

Hi Alex! About reed issue I would like to suggest you some soutions. In order to reduce deformation of the bridges and petals due to the increasing blowdown back pressure, you could use three petals and two bridges on each side of the cage. Narrower petals have less area, so the applied force to the bridge will be reduced. To avoid bending fatige you should change bridges to vertical walls or splitters, linking both sides of the “V” cage. Due to the pressure and temperature conditions, the suitable material for reed is steel, the same used for reed valves in pulsejet engines.

Awesome result mate! Sounds tough as. Just a thought, given the huge amount of pressure the reed valves are seeing at high timing, it may be a good idea to slightly increase the area of the exhaust hole in the rotary valve (increase the duration of the exhaust port opening time) to allow the engine to breathe a bit better. This should decrease the peak pressure that the reed valves are seeing and may help with longevity in addition to the other reed valve mods you are going to do.

My son raced MX for 10+ years. Had excellent results with Carbon Tech reeds. No failures.

WOW! Usually people swap steel reeds for fiber... guess you are going the opposite direction. If that's true 30hp then you are really killing it. Keep up the good work!

You could design rotary valves to replace the reed valves, it would certain complicate things a lot … thinking of complicating things, you could make the rotary valves with variable timing 👍

Great work! I 'm excited to see progress in this new engine design. Have you considered a "V Force" reed block design? The extra reed surface area may be important for reed life

Those were the reeds to have on Suzuki 2-strokes, they made some difference in performance but reed longevity was the biggest difference.

Great progress. That must be a nice motivation boost to see 30HP!

you can get a polini reed sheet where you cut out the reed, i did this on my ported aprillia rs50, if you cut it as one big square it gets a vetter seal. im not sure if the engine got more horsepower because of stronger reeds or fresh reeds but it works. i hav some spare if you know the thickness.
