NOT Sure What's BETTER - Debarking A Burned Log From A Fire, A Log Delivery, Or Milling Logs Again?

In this video, Greg gets a delivery of long doug fir logs, he mills up some boards for when we get another slab poured and he and Karlyn (his youngest daughter), work on figuring out how to debark the burned logs we have from a forest fire. It's a busy couple of days, but we're here for it!
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from ‪@BarnGeek‬ . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Happy to know we have ALL of the logs we will need for our build on the property! Good to be back on the mill again and glad that we have a tool to help debark all of these burned logs. It's a VERY messy job, but definitely works. Hope you enjoy this video! 😁

Hi, Bart- It’s too bad that log isn’t any good but it will make a lot of btu’s as firewood. 😁

Howdy y’all- I didn’t know you had a grapple for your skid steer buggy. When you got out the log wizard l put my dust mask on. I gotta go take a shower now lol😆 I have pushed a barking spud and that turns into some work if the sap isn’t moving in the log. Looking forward to seeing more videos of your build. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless

Hi, Paul- I like using the forks better than the grapple for the most part. I need to wear a dusk mask next time ! The long logs (not burnt) are debarking a lot easier and I’m going to saw those until I have time to mess with the burnt ones. Thank for watching! 😊

I have a log wizard. You should use a short bar, preferably with a removeable nose, it makes it much lighter and easier to use. The arms get sore with all that weight you have. Make sure to use bar oil, even though you aren't cutting you need it to keep the chain cool so it doesn't stretch. You would constantly have to tighten the chain until it finally stretches to the max adjustment on your saw...I know I did that lol. Ring shake is real common in Hemlock, ruins the lumber inside.

Hi, Justin- Shorter bar makes sense- that thing is heavy and awkward. I’ll look into the removable nose. Sounds like you agree not to bother with that log?
@justinrussell760
@justinrussell760 Ай бұрын
@@ourdreaminthewoods Yes, I've milled some ring shaked Hemlock and you will see the crack, separated wood run down the lumber, makes it weak. I know you have more patience than I do to clean those logs lol, you are a busy man and that certainly adds to your workload!

You will need three showers before you go inside to take final shower, clothes can be cut up and used to smelt high carbon steel. Nice to see you bunking all your logs, so many sawyers do not take the time and end up losing lumber to ground rot when logs are not cut as soon as was planed. Ray Stormont

The Wizard made short work of the bark. Could you make a pass down the log once it is on the mill and you have the position figured where you would make your first cut? It would clean up the log and make your blade last longer. A pass each time you turned the log would take a lot less time than cleaning the entire log. Sort of like a Debarker on a WoodMizer sawmill. Do you think the wind shake was a result of the tree standing but no longer being alive? Going to be a busy summer. Glad that you have the extra time off from work. Thanks for the video
@hpw59
@hpw59 Ай бұрын
was going to suggest the same thing....lot less time debarking. Either pop a chalk line where your cut is going to be or use a laser
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods Ай бұрын
Hi, Mike- That’s probably what I should do. I just think that everything is going to turn black on the mill but maybe not. Not sure about the wind shake. The second log looked fine. I started milling the long load of logs I just got- bypassing the burned ones for now. Thanks for watching! 😁

❤ beautiful bunch of logs you got delivered... do you mind sharing what you paid for them? Wonder what it would cost to get a load like that delivered to the Memphis area?...LOL
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods Ай бұрын
Hi, HW- I paid $650/thousand- so about $3,900 for the load plus hauling which was around $400. These were considered premium grade and paid around $150/ thousand more than standard mill grade. I have a buddy in Alabama that wants to do a log swap - haven’t figured that out yet. But I want to 😁
