In this video I show you an overview of the Baofeng UV-5R ham radio. Everything in this video also applies to other Baofeng radios like the Baofeng BF-F8HP, Baofeng UV-5X & UV-5G as well as rebranded Baofeng radios like the TIDRadio UV-5R and TIDRadio GM-5R radios.
I review all the buttons, and all of the basic operations of the UV5R.

I'm impressed! A guy that actually spelled Vise-Grip correct! Even that "Vice Grip Garage" clown failed that. I mean, how does one grip "vice"? Isn't that like embracing sin or bad behavior? Egad. No, Murica, that cast iron clamping thing on your workbench is NOT a vice. It is a vise. And, no, your local Crime Farmer LEO's do not have a vise squad. That is a *vice* squad.

This Happy Ham has several. The oldest is about 6, maybe 7 years old. The poor thing's lived a hard life, but it's still ticking. The backlight LEDs gave up the ghost a few years back and the volume control got scratchy (cleaned right up)...and the SMA antenna connector has come loose a few times, but the radio still works just fine. Best twenty I ever spent!

I belong to a small hunt club, and 3 years ago we bought about 10 of the F8GPs from someone who supplied them already programmed. None of us are tekkies, and all of us have our radios locked. So we don't screw them up. I just bought a back-up UV-5R, and was nervous about setting it up. Figured I didn't really need to program it for basic Send/Receive operation. Your video confirmed that, and provided clear instructions on what to do to get it working, plus how to manipulate it and the others we have, if we ever want to change anything. Much appreciated!

So it’s been 2 months since I commented about getting GMRS and HAM radios. Well, turns out I like the hobby and am going to my local amateur radio club. My collection of radios has grown now from no radio to a lot of different radios. I now have a TD-H8, UV-82, GC-5, UV-K5, TP-5R, GT-5R, RT-470X, BF-H6, as well as 2 UV-5Rs and 2 UV-5Gs. Then there is the 15 UV-5Rs I have in my closet that I’m giving to my friends and family for Christmas. My significant other says she blames you for this new hobby.

I’ve been contemplating getting a ham style radio for years just for funsies. I didn’t really see a practical use nor did I want to bother investing the time to learn all the tedious ins and outs for something I’d most likely lose interest in. Your channel has really peaked my interest. Now more than ever I see the need in having a such a device….for emergencies if nothing else. Agreed. And, most of the remaining Ham operators left around here do nothing more than have a weekly "net", where all they do is check in with each other to see how many of them are still breathing. On rare occasion they'll talk a bit about some lie they heard on the tell-lie-vision (and actually somehow still believe). But that's it. They do NOTHING noteworthy. What a waste. Very empty stuff. Makes me cringe EVERY time.

Appreciate the video! Lots of learning to be had, apparently. Just went through 2 stillbirth GMRS radios for backcountry sled/ski use so decided to step up to the cheaper option that requires actual brianpower and might actually work. I may have made a mistake.

Hey guy, thank you for helping all of us newbies through these trying times! And I mean I'm trying not to throw this thing at a brick wall! We have the UV-5G model and I upgraded one antenna but I can't get the antenna off the other one. Do you know what kind of screw is in that tiny little hole?

I got my general license a few years ago. Unfortunately the local area repeated stations have been 'less than operational'...so I stopped ham-stuff. I'm .ca clinical engineer in a local hospital and the covi d thing kept me running like a lunatic for 18 montgs..how retired...dusted off my balcony and ready to start again. Local ham club can help. Sub'd to your blog...thanks for all the great info' & entertainment!

Another stellar video you are the master! These beofeng HT's are the only cheyeneez radios I will intentionally buy. For the price they cannot be beat. Right now they have a ("High Power")two pack with 3800mh batterry and tacticool antenna for $75, I mean come on you can't beat that with a dodge ball.

We use these on our search and rescue team and that little alarm is great. If something happened to one of us that may be the only way we could communicate it.

The FSM said "In God we trust. All other pay cash" That is the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster) the one true God and our savoir. I just ordered my new Baofeng UV5R 8W. Thanks for the great advice for programming and usage of this radio. I do get the concept of line of sight. The frequency of these radios work best with shorter distances. I do like the multiple output settings of low, Mid, and High energy transmit settings.

Great video Randy, I’m a happy HAM who started with, and still uses a UV5R. Love my radio for what it is, and love your videos for what they are. This video showed me things about my radio I was ignorant about, thank you, and f@@k the sad hams!

My first thought was another UV-5R video? What else is there to cover? But I had time to kill with my coffee and watched anyway. Guess what, I learned a few more things about my radio, and not just the UV-5R but my UV-9G and UV-9R as well. Keep up the great videos!!

I'm listening to you for the last hour, you're both verbose and terse, which is interesting, you also relay the information clearly without bs annoying editing and distractions. Anyhows, I'm a software engineer and I have 0 knowledge in frequencies and radios, I just remember as a kid that my friend's dad had a big fat radio thingie with bulbs on his desk and he would show us some amazing things from live communicating with people around the planet (I guess that's called low freq, right?) to listening on weird recorded signals and cryptic messages (like directions or something). In anycase I'm looking to get into it.
