I have found myself following your approach and, more importantly, trying to transmit it to my son who is 14. Was really proud of him at the weekend when he took a triple bogey on the chin and came back with 3 straight pars. Not so long ago it would have triggered a meltdown

@@NotAScratchGolfer I agree with this commenter. I've been under 100 a lot more often since I've been following your advice, laughing more and having more fun... While just focusing on the next shot. I was a 48 with an 8 on par 3 8th at Torrey Pines last week. Was irritated. Melted down a bit on that hole.... But bucked up, laughed it off. Remembered why I was out there, and shot +2 on the next 4 holes, getting the round back into shape.

I've really found solace in your saying that "I'm not good enough to get mad." It's so true for us weekend hackers with double digit handicaps. It needs no explanation why we hit bad shots when we do... we're just not scratch golfers, and bad shots will happen and happen often. I've still not had a great deal of time to practice or improve, but I'm enjoying golf more, and that's really what's important.

Tried a Swingtweak the other day using your code, and despite the app itself being pretty rough (I had to record my swing about a dozen times to get it to register), the advice was pretty solid and in depth. Also, this is a cool video because I was thinking about it during my round yesterday. Started off bogey, then a wild triple bogey. Instead of getting down and declaring the round over, I just decided to focus harder and grind out a score. I had three birdies on the back nine, erasing my triple, and kept it in the 70s. Grit and positivity is such an underrated aspect of golf. Great vid!

If I hit a bad tee shot on the 1st hole, I always declare the round over. I just yell "I take a double par on every hole, shot a 144, this tee shot is now the first of a new round". I recommend the strategy, my friends die laughing every time. Probably a random comment but your mentioning of declaring the round over made me think of that lol

Interesting video and helpful thought process. It's always the best three holes that keep giving me hope that my scores haven't plateaued and there are gains to be made after the round. Usually, 1 or 2 bounce back shots during the round like a sand save or a dart from the rough that keep my mindset optimistic during the round.

What gap wedge do you use? 48 / 50 / 52? Also, great video; and easier said than done indeed. The challenge I often have with this is the shots I hit well, but that don't work out. I hit a tee shot on Sunday on a hole with bunkers left and water right, and faded it off the bunker exactly like I planned, only for the ball to get a brutal kick right across the fairway and roll into the drink. Messed me up for 2 holes.

I had to share an experience I had last night and I will copy/paste from what I posted on my fb page....Tales from the fairway....so recently I used a driving cart and Saturday I had my worst round of the year, a 52, (I refer to nine holes as a round, as that's my normal) and I was thinking maybe I was rushing shots....I'm dealing with a shoulder that's doing physical therapy so maybe that added, but had been doing ok for some rounds prior so i won't blame it on that. So 2nite I decide to cart again and on my course, the first 2 holes can set the tone....2 par 4's.....God forbid I start with 2 double bogey's, that can ruin a round or at least put you in a bad place....so 2nite i start off with triple bogey/bogey...not good....matter of fact of my first six holes I had zero pars and only one bogey....horrible....now driving in a cart the round is going quick and playing bad puts me in a bad mood.....finished with 3 bogey and a 51.....however, with a cart I still have daylight and decide I may try for another nine...... Welp, I guess my body was a bit warmed off as I reeled of four pars in a row.....but then caught up to a foursome and now the fear was if I can't play thru it may get dark before finishing nine.....so I blow by those guys by 2 holes and play the last three holes double bogey/par/bogey.....now i gotta race back for the 2 skipped holes and I shoot bogey/par on those....all in all my lowest score of the year, 40.....which put me in a great mood......it's amazing to think how playing the same nine back to back can lead to a 51/40....sometimes I kick myself for shooting 46s but being happy with 45s but in truth had i played 18 holes every time I guess it stands to reason the back nine you'd play better b/c your body is warmed up to the task. Bottom line is I've forgotten all about the 51 and focused on the 40, which by the way with six pars, that's just the fifth time I've ever done that....I've had 7 pars once in my life.

Since you work with Troon, I challenge you to play my local Troon track in Escondido, CA called Eagle Crest. I’m interested to see what you’d score on a complete crap course as opposed to these beautiful courses that makes us all jealous. EC has a great layout but course conditions are a 2.5 out of 10, as the owners have either run out of money or just don’t care.

Like the videos but I feel like my handicap would be much lower at wide open courses as well ... I like to play different courses regularly, and there's many out there with OB and water looming on nearly every shot ... one thing that you mention is your swing, and ugly or not, it's consistent, which is most high handicappers issue ...

Thanks, Jeremy! The handicap system accounts for the relative difficulty of the course (at least in theory). In any case, I do often wonder if my cap would go down if I weren't playing different courses all the time. Food for thought!

I propose a much more easier approach. If you’ve never broken 100 make every course a par 100 until you break 100 10 times, if you can’t break 90 make your next course a par 90 and work on breaking that 10 times. 80, 70 etc. smaller bites. We’re not pros and the pros didn’t go from shooting 120 to 65 in one year. They got there with $1000’s of sponsorship dollars which most of us don’t have. And It is self torture to think that a weekend amateur will, playing by all strict rules. The strict rules should not apply to pros who make money on your and are sponsored. The rest of us should play by relaxed rules to have fun and not they down on ourselves every time we mess up. One can take 25 lessons and not improve, so rules have to change. They are designed for the elite. If ur going to be winning millions of dollars play a par 72. I Al see I think the new clubs don’t help high handicappers. The clubs 15 years ago did. All teachers are trying to clone a swing they most of us will never be able to reproduce. It’s a waste. Find someone who works with what you have and not change everything, it’ll be more expensive and much less fun guaranteed..
