Really need to take the mans advice. 2 1/2 years and a couple hundred rounds and haven't broke 80 yet. Several 80 and 81s. Its just ....hero shots are so much fun

Great video Adam, congrats on the score. My rule is simple, No hero shot!!! It has helped me go from shooting 100+ to high 80’s.

It's rare not to see you make at least one birdie but to still break 80 without one is really good course management, especially on a narrow tree lined track. My rules are similar to yours - keep it in play, no hero shots, approach club for the back of the green (because when do I ever hit it 100% flush?), focus on speed of lag putts.

I definitely abide by the "no hero shots" rule...although what counts as a hero shot has changed for me over time. I have learned to work the ball left-to-right or right-to-left with good enough consistency that I can now play out of trouble and get it near or on the green IF the circumstances are reasonable (to work the ball around a tree, for example). The rule I often hear that I do NOT follow is "don't always hit driver off the tee" if you've got a narrow fairway or want to avoid bunkers or some hazard. This rule assumes I have another club in my bag that is more consistent and reliable. That's simply not the case for me! So, I'm better off using my driver to take advantage of the length I get. And, more often than not, I am "straight enough" off the tee with driver. Like you, Adam, grinding on the range to work on having a reliable 3-wood or 3-iron is just not going to happen. What time I have for golf, I want to be playing...not practicing. Like you, my main mantra is being tidy around the greens with my chipping and putting.

“KZfaq gets very upset” 😂 Personal rule involves where I’m allowed to hit driver, since I have no consistency with it.

I follow your rules and it changed the way I play. Lower scores. Less stress. Less miserable on the course. 😅

Nice round. You do a fantastic job of limiting damage on the course with your short game.

those rules are so simple but sooo hard to play when you're on the course. Even when you're like "I should just get back in play and try to shoot a 6 when the hero shots cause 8s and 9s, lol.

Hey Adam, You have become my favorite golf youtuber. We are very similar golfers who are not blessed with great swings and hover between 6-9 handicap. My rules are very similar but I must admit that some days I manage to stay discipline and some days my ego gets the better of me. Keep it up and if you are ever in Melbourne Aus let me know. Massimo

Breaking 80 with no birdies and your putter not being as reliable as usual is its own kind of cool accomplishment. Tidy everywhere else.

Good round on a tight course, I’d be perfectly happy with that. I shot 83 today after a month off from golf (bad back) by following these exact rules. When I haven’t played in awhile I’m focused on keeping the ball in play and just hitting greens. A lot of overseeding right now in AZ so the greens are slow. My short game was awful because I haven’t played, which is normal. 42-41 after a month off, I was ok with. Cap index went from 7.9 to 8.0. 😮

I try to follow some rules, but it only takes a good drive and a juicy pin location to be tempted beyond my willpower. A lot like dating while single.

Same as yours, but I add a few more: 1) Avoid bunkers at all costs (because my bunker game is horrible), and 2) Know my distances and play to them, and 3) when between 2 clubs, take more club and ease my swing a little. And because at 65 I'm nowhere near as long as I use to be: 4) Don't go for it on Par 5s, and 5) play for bogey on the longest Par 4s. With those last 2 rules, I still get my share of birdies and pars by getting my 2nd shot in the right position to get up and down.

Great round! Definitely the opposite of how I played today - my typically reliable fairway finder decided to be the "let's find OB ASAP!" club today, and didn't play ball off the fairway either. That combined with the flatstick being ice cold didn't make for a great round. On the plus side my driver was the best it's been in a few rounds and I chipped a LOT of recoveries close.

One rule I almost always follow as a 5 handicap - on holes with hazards lining both sides of the fairway such as water or trees, I'll swallow my pride and put the driver away regardless of hole length because my shot shape is far more consistent with a 3 wood or driving iron

Pretty impressive round. Only brought double into play once! Also have to imagine 33 putts is about as bad as you will putt so with this strategy and driving the ball the way you did, 79-80 were about the worst scores you could’ve shot! Need to implement these ideas again since it’s been a few years since I’ve broken 80 but have come agonizingly close a few times this season!

1. Take what the course gives you. Bad sidehill lie? Half swing, make good contact and get on with your life 2. Play aggressively to your strengths. Pitching short-sided to a tight pin? Aim right at it. Pitching is the best part of my game.

Approach play and driving is key. Short game and putting is big, but i only broke 80 3 times this year and my sg18 for putting and short game is near 0hc according to Arccos, but driving and approach is closer to 6-9hc. I bet if i flip flop those I'm in the 70s more often than not.

I never try hero shots and I know when to leave the driver in the bag, even on some very long par fours that I could not reach in 2 even with driver. Because of my advancing age I have moved up in the tee box. My problem remains consistent execution. I know everyone struggles with this, but with me it leads to triple bogies that wreck the score.
