I grew up in a suburb of NYC during the late ‘60’s - ‘mid ‘70’s. The train tracks ran parallel to the street I lived on, approximately 200 ft or so feet behind our house and the station was about 500 ft south of us. Growing up in a musical family, sound was -and still is- such a prominent sense for and an integral part of me. I can’t exactly put it into words but there’s something about the pitch-changing drone of these engines as they notched up from the station that grabs at me. I used to compare it to the sound of violins. It is so very much tied into my memories of that time. Of course, nothing compares to hearing them live but thank you for capturing these mesmerizing sounds that are an indelible part of my childhood.

Love it, I know quite a few of those locos and have worked on some. I even did a lot of work to the powervan behind A62 at 7:14 about 15 years ago. Engine spruce up, new genset control system, etc. 👍. Have spent many hours at the load test platform at Newport yards listening to the engines being put through their paces (during replacement of the HEP units on the N class Locos - also about 15 years ago).

I remember one Anzac day in Seymour. Waiting to see if any trains on the broad gauge when all of a sudden I heard a Leslie RS5T horn. Not long after that was this amazing emd chorus. A81, A78, 2x X class, a T, H and P class nearly all but notched up and led a mixed freight bound for tocumwal. The emd's were; 12-645e3b, 16-567e (non turbo), 16-645e (non turbo), 2x 8-645e, 8-567c

I believe that all the motors in these locomotives were built in the U.S. I don’t know much about locomotives in countries other than the U.S. But I do know a lot of locomotives in the US have the same sounding motors. And they were built in the US or Canada. I have seen companies like GE make locomotives and ship them to places like Australia

3:38 Looks like a NOHAB AA16 to me or has EMD also licensed the FP7 model to an Australian manufacturer?
@ThePaulv12
@ThePaulv12 5 жыл бұрын
Here you go. Read all about the class. They were built under licence by Clyde engineering. Our tighter loading gauge meant the F series nose shape was modified a bit but yes the general configuration is F model. The weight is about 110 metric tons or tonnes. They were originally broad gauge 5'3". There still is quite a lot of Broad Gauge about in the state of Victoria. Note we evolved a variant of the 567 engine that was incorporated into production by EMD 50 or so years ago. I'll give you some links to some other interesting EMD based locos built for the VR. Surprisingly quite a few are still in revenue service all over Australia and many have been converted to standard gauge and run all over the country. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_B_class_(diesel) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_S_class_(diesel) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_X_class_(diesel) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_C_class_(diesel) A private operator imported some NOHABs (DSB Class MZ) from Denmark to Australia iirc. They have 20V645s in them but they're not US E series or F series in looks. They look 'utilitarian' which is code for ugly as your mother inlaw. You might like them lol. They are quite successful actually. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSB_Class_MZ
