Many homeschooling families enjoy notebooking as a way to engage their learners. In this video I share what notebooking looks like in our home.

Absolutely! I’ve picked up so many great things from friends and mamas along the way. It’s a joy to be a part of this homeschool community.

At the end of our school year I immediately have my kids put their school keepsakes in a clear bin that permanently lives in their closet. They have an art binder, a scripture memory verse bag book, reading log booklet, and literature log binder, everything else gets thrown away.

Did you purchase the outer journal from JG? Thanks for making this video!

Hi Denise! I didn’t. Those are the ones I snagged from a shop closing sale on Etsy. Juniper Grove Journals aren’t as floppy as mine and are more structured. They have a higher price point, but it’s worth it. If you look on Etsy, you can search “leather traveler journals”. The ones we have were bought in 2018.

Ok, so the notebooks are used just once a week and the other days they are orally narrating? Did I understand that right?
@kindletogetherness
@kindletogetherness Жыл бұрын
If the student is in Form 1, it’s typically suggested they narrate all subject areas orally. After each reading, they orally narrate. Once a week, the parent will add a formal narration to a narration notebook until the student becomes responsible for that in Form 2. Some of our notebooks, they use each time we come to that lesson (poetry, artist, natural history, etc). I’d not consider each one of these a narration notebook.

@@kindletogetherness ok great! Thank you for clarifying! I have a soon to be 9 year old and an 11 Yr old. We’re starting notebooking and I was thinking of one entry a day, but sounds like that’s too much. We could have a notebooking day, that may be nice.

Id love to hear your thoughts on a Y1 student who is expressing frustration about doing drawings for narrations. I had been writing down at least one daily of his narrations from our readings and he always complains about having to draw. What are your thoughts on this? Also what does Y1 copywork look like for a pre-reader?
@kindletogetherness
@kindletogetherness Жыл бұрын
Hi Haley! In truth, I never force my kids to illustrate narrations. So long as they are willing to narrate orally, that’s enough. Some kiddos won’t enjoy art and drawing and in regards to narrations, it’s not essential. Their assignment is the oral retelling. I take the pressure off and invite them to draw if they’d like, but I don’t push it at all. 💕 If the student can form all their letters, I start with copywork. Usually I have them choose from their memory verse or our hymn. I have them do copywork in a composition book for younger years with the wider lines for writing. Something like these: amzn.to/3OzEOjK
@haleyfink6325
@haleyfink6325 Жыл бұрын
@@kindletogetherness that's great to know. Okay so if they can do some letters but not all, the copywork should just be a single letter until they know it then move on? Then just a single word once they know all letters? I'll try doing that with the narrations..maybe that's why he's pushing back because he feels forced. But in the context of drawing lessons (we have the drawing with children book from Mona something), you'd say that's okay to require?
@kindletogetherness
@kindletogetherness Жыл бұрын
@@haleyfink6325 If a student is still learning their letters, I’d not require copywork, but instead offer a handwriting curriculum until they master their letter formation. Copywork is for teaching visualization of the text and then writing grammar, spelling, and punctuation of a great quality passage from memory. This helps the student master spelling, punctuation, and grammar without wrote instruction. Regarding a special drawing class or lesson, if that’s important to you and on your schedule, then it’s fine to require, imo. I’d just be certain it is valued for a specific reason that you can express. That’s my personal opinion and not necessarily from Miss Mason’s principles. Her ideas and pedagogy are not student centered or student led as some think. They are teacher led but always aim to respect the personhood of the child. So as the educator, you can decide if a course holds value. If it does, your child should master their will and attempt the task. Just be sure it’s a worthy task (what I was referencing above).
