My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.
Links are affiliate links where they can be - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

On behalf of almost 90k people, we’re glad you’re here! And Cooper in his yellow jacket? That’s as sweet & delicious as any chocolate bunny I might today. Thank you for sharing Paris and your life journal!

I normally don’t comment but I wanted to tell you that I’ve been watching every new video because I really look forward to them. It’s no surprise that today’s post resonated so much. It’s always been about feeling like you’re not living and it sucks when you feel that way.Thank you for sharing. I really needed to hear that today. What you’re doing matters and I appreciate that you’re doing it :)

I’m glad you haven’t had those thoughts lately! I’m glad you are here! 🙃 I think everyone feels like life is empty or lonely sometimes. But glad you got support and guidance. I really love your VLOGS. They are fun and meaningful. Your sharing is healing! 🙏❤️ Stay with us Jay! We need someone like you on this planet for a long time!!! Now… how do you film with people talking in the background and garbage men there? I am fascinated you never had your phone just taken or someone knocking it over?! (This is the less profound part of my comment section. 😂)

It is really hard as an adult to make friends - your time is so limited and you have to be vulnerable. I didn't even realize I'd been protecting myself from pain until later. Thanks for sharing!

My gawd. You're my urban Buddha. While I like your clever focused vlogs (like that awesome 20 in 20 series), sometimes the ones where you're standing on a beautiful street thinking your thoughts out loud are so, so good. Thanks, Jay. Please keep doing your brilliant mish-mosh. And Happy Easter 🐰.

It’s good that you took a day out for yourself. I think a big turning point for you was getting Cooper, I certainly think no matter what sh*t life throws at you, your dog is there to comfort and love you, for them their happiness is in that moment and the love you share xx

I really appreciate the deep honesty you bring to videos like this. For years, I've told close friends that I often think, "I'd rather be dead than X", where X is a whole variety of things like "live like this for five more decades". If you think about it, it's actually an incredibly life-AFFIRMING attitude: If you refuse to draw the line anywhere and accept ANY life on ANY terms, you're not really stretching or striving at all. You're just living according to someone else's idea of how you should live, accepting whatever comes your way without a vicious fight. So as paradoxical as it is, there really isn't much difference between "I'd rather be dead [than X]" and loudly affirming, "I want to live"!!! And Jay: You are a successful, independent ARTIST living in Paris, France. What is art, if not showing people how to see the world, how to see beauty that they've somehow overlooked or forgotten exists? Arguably, you have really made it! By some measures, many are more fortunate than you. But by the measure you're defining with your life and the art that is your life, very few are as fortunate or as successful as you already are.

Bonjour Jay.. I completely understand those thoughts.. not suicidal, but just not seeing the point of "me", and wishing I wasn't here. It's a pretty crappy feeling. I'm proud of you for working on yourself and realizing that feeling was truly just your spirit wanting to really live! 💛💛

So glad you are not having that thought so much anymore. Death is so final and thoughts are fleeting and change from moment to moment. I'm finding being resilient against that monkey mind trying to mess with me is the real challenge. You are living a sweet life in Paris with many friends online and off, and an adorable dog who needs you. It's not always fireworks but at least you are living with the freedom to chase any whim you have. I have so many different creative ideas pinging around in my head that my one big fear is that I won't have enough life left to fit them all in!😄 Sending you hugs on your down days and thank you for sharing Paris with me 🥰

I remember when I heard "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the 4746th time and suddenly this one line got to me. "I don't wanna die. I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all." That's what I thought of during your video. But I guess you're right. Of course we want to live. The circumstances and moods are just not always what we want them to be. I believe when you want to learn loving yourself, you kind of already do ❤

Thank you for another wonderful, thoughtful Jay-share! I thought I had commented…but must’ve forgotten to press the “post button”, LOL! This video brought to mind a semi-silent, very beautiful docu-film, by director Philip Gröning, called “Into Great Silence”. There is more information about it on wikipedia, and it is sometimes streamed on prime amazon. Deep and gentle, and lovely.

Wishing you were dead is very relatable. I have that thought very often. It’s logical if you believe that your life absolutely sucks. Like I don’t want to die, and it is scary, but I also don’t want to live this life either. So I’m kinda stuck in a limbo.

I think loving yourself IS the journey in life and it's more apparent when you're single and don't have children. Life doesn't owe any of us anything. Which was a hard one for me to accept because I believe in karma and when you put out good, good comes back to you - but then you have to define what is "good" to you? Having a partner? I see a lot of people who are very unhappy in their partnerships. You're a very deep thinker and so life can be more difficult because of that too. Is there a point to all this? I like to think so but who knows... I think you're on the right track when I listen to your thoughts on these vlogs... life is just a series of ups and downs and change and happiness is not a destination, it's the whole ride and it's also fleeting. it comes and goes and we're constantly shifting...
