As a kid growing up in the San Gabriel valley in the 60's...there was nothing better than Dad taking my buddies and I to Irwindale, Lions, and OCIR for weekend drags. I remember calling Irwindale repeatedly, just to listen to the recorded promo (by Steve Evans) for the upcoming weekends race hype. Also spent a good deal of time building model drag cars, pouring over car mags, and playing with my Hot Wheels. Maybe that's why I'm still drag racing at 63, and loving every minute of it...thanks Dad ✌😎

Same here but east coast tracks. Built models of most of these cars. This was a great time in racing history. I loved that the cars/teams were named. Blue max, chi town hustler, revolution, jungle Jim, the snake, etc. Nothing like that now.

We may have bumped into each other at one of those drags. When there were funny cars involved , my dad and I were there too. Gas Rhonda was my favorite and Big Daddy was his. I loved them days!

I totally agree! Now they need decals to make them look kinda, sorta, maybe like what they want'em to be? Besides being narrower and all?

In the 60's and 70's both my parents raced the tracks of southern Michigan and growing up around drag racing was a great part of my youth. I still enjoy watching it today...

Oh yeah. so many splinters of the mind's eye from my youth. And Big Jim Dunn, the, " funny fireman". I own a copy of, " Funny Car Summer" about his exploits in the mid-engine Barracuda. So many of these famous cars from that time are in his movie as well. With Snap, Crackle & Pop 'roid ragin'! I liked The Blue Max when Harry Schmidt still owned it. And Mr Four Speed, Ronny Sox...RIP man. I got so good with the four speeds in my SS Pinto & modded CobraII that the gang from high school called me Mr 4 speed. Got cussed for beating a few guys with what they insisted was an automatic! Thank you for this video that brings back so many fond memories!

That night time racing brings back memories being at Detroit dragway. It made things more focused and intense. The dry hop echos were phenomenal.

First time I've ever seen footage of Jim Dunn in his rear-engined funny car. I do remember seeing Ed 'layer cake' Shaver driving a rear engined funny car @ Santa Pod raceway this side of the pond.

I bet they had 1/4 of the current funny car bhp, not to mention no twin magnetos or 16 plugs and massive fuel pumps. On the flip side,I bet some of these vintage funny cars were running 98%nitro 👍
