What a fantastic documentary!! I'm 45 now and have lived in Devon and skated Bristol since the 80s. I can totally remember that demo with Cards. It was the first time I'd seen pros skate. I just couldn't believe what was possible on a board. Wainwright ollied from the third bowl over the fence and had a sequence in RAD mag. We used to go there and I remember Spex ollied a whole one of the moguls after I had just learnt to early grad from one to the other then he bombed down and ollied out of the corner at the bottom of the moguls and I was speechless!! He was really friendly and talkative. A true legend!! God bless and long live Bedminster!!!

My god!! Just stumbled on this and close to crying. I was 10 and at the skate park the day it opened. My dad lived in Northfield House just behind. My mum had a flower shop on East street...Paulines Florist and we also had a SKATEBOARD SHOP further down in Nelsons Parade. I remember Mark and Steve Galdies, Junior, Gary Holly (Think that was his name). Remember us skating for Bristol and all going up to London for a competition, had a blow out in coach on M4 if I remember. We all went down to see the Hobie team at Ashton Court too. Cooper helmets, ACS trucks, G&S FibreFlex, Belair Snakes.....it's all coming back to me now.

As a Bristol boy, some of my happiest memories are of weekends and holidays skating the fuck out of Dean Lane, or Bedminster as us north Bristol boys called it. My best mate from those days is actually in a couple of shots in this - the young lad in the Anthrax t-shirt with his little brother in tow. I can vaguely remember him saying there were cameras down there one time. Can't recall where I was, but amazing to see the footage 30 years later. Good times.

So stoked I've got a few tricks in here! Wish there was more Spex footage, but video cameras were so rare compared to today, when everyone has a camera capable of 4K video tucked in their pocket! Miss the old Deaner so much. The snake run (river run) and in particular PLANET ROCK and TOP BANK were so good!

What was the name of the tight as fuck little bank to quarter pipe behind the half pipe? I spent hours and hours trying to manual across the top then drop back in, bailed every time I still remember the excitement that rippled through the park whenever spex and dai showed up, happy days
@pigdog2374 жыл бұрын
@@yeahyeahbrother that was "the tube" or the "concrete wave" the smaller, longer version of Planet Rock. Before they built the halfpipe, it went all along the bottom of the big bank!
@yeahyeahbrother4 жыл бұрын
I started skating it in 87,by that time the half was already ancient,never knew it stretched right across the bottom section,I would.have loved it
@pigdog2374 жыл бұрын
@@yeahyeahbrother it was only the whippy little "tube" that ran across the bottom. They cut a section out to build the halfpipe, which was originally about 10ft vert but cut down to 6 or 7ft by about 1988?

Oh my! That really takes me back. I spent so many happy hours there in 1979 when I was supposed to be studying at uni. I was old for skating even back then, but I didn't care cos it was so exciting. Then I left Bristol in and never knew that the scene and the park got bigger and better. I'm even older now - but still skating!

This made my evening seeing this. At 40 years old I used to skate this in the early 90s with wes and that. Bumped Into spex years ago at Glastonbury skatepark with his kids and it was the first time I'd ever met him, a mythical legend. His kids were on scooters at the time so I'm glad they've gone into skating. Some amazing memories. Mark from chilled heat actually got me back on board around 1999 when Yate skatepark was being poured, and he jumped the fence to skate it. Talked me into skating again. So if you read this Mark,huge thanks..

@iwannabentley4 жыл бұрын
@@dizla21 yes, the same. I used to skate sk8&ride on a Friday and the vert skater chap from chilled heat was often there handing them. Out to everyone. . I live on the Dorset coast nowadays, and there's and D. L. H stickers randomly on a lamppost down here.

mad sk8&ride was hectic! I had to sellotape my membership card together just so it would survive. Still remember it to this day blue and white and you had the shop out the back with all the old school Raleigh choppers. A plate of curly fries half way through ya skate was a must. Haha

Being 47 now A real trip down memory lane watching this. Fond memory’s of setting of from my hometown of yate most weekends. Bus into Bristol, up to rollermania, look at all the decks I couldn’t afford .tony coffee watching us like hawks I remember lol. We’d Watch whatever skate video they had playing on the vcr in the window for a bit , then onto to the curbs at college green. Hour or so there and then off to dean lane for rest of the day. Good times and memories.

Man this was just what I needed after a stressful day….possibly the best skatepark documentary that I have ever seen but then I am biased because I lived this park. Originally jumping on the train to get there at weekends just after it was built, seeing the changes. Moved to Bristol Southside and saw the first of the demise…there was nothing left at all for long months except that weird triangular metal spine. Even the metal quarter pipe super slide in the wet was gone. That was my sketchy backside air at 2.55 couldn’t believe anyone ever filmed that. Still skating at 55 and Specs, I do still have a picture of you pulling a 5 foot backside air out of that metal quarter Truprint style. Mental. Love the rebirth but I miss that tree.

I’ve watched this a few times now and think it’s really genuinely brilliant. I’d never heard of Dean Lane before but after seeing this I went out of my way when I had to go to Bristol for work a few weeks ago to go and check it out. It’s a really amazing place and I couldn’t believe that it had passed me by for so long. Also, for weeks and weeks now I haven’t been able to stop saying Dean Lane Hardcore in a really heavy Bristol accent. Try it!!

I'm Mike, a skateboader from kenfig hill in south wales. I used to catch a train all the way from Bridgend station to Bristol Temple Meades then skate the rest of the way to bedminster skatepark (deane lane) in 1987 and 1988. It was a very sketchy area but was amazing back in the day. My favourite was the quater pipe at the bottom of the park. Spex was the mind blowing local superstar of the park, when he skated the quarter pipe, loads would gather to watch him, he totally ripped the park stylishly flying and tweaking out of the moguls etc. I skated with 'Box' (looks like he's in this video) and 'Theo'. We used to drag the quarter pipe to the band stand when it was wet. It was the initial training ground for me getting into vert which I ended up becoming sposored and did demos and comps for 10 years. They were the best times of my life.. Hi to Mark (used to skate bath vert skater) and Danny (used to skate worcester indoor vert).

Absolutely loved skating this place back in the late 80’s at the age of 12-16 we all use to save up our school lunch money through the week to catch the train over from Cardiff on the weekend. So good still see people ripping up the park and awesome that the older guys are keeping it going. Bristol was the main UK skate scene back in the day, we were lucky to be so close to it 👊🏻

Great doco... was there 85-90's continuously, would be nice to see more. My memory was - ... top bank air at speed, then continuing down to bowl 3 with either a split head or a nice air - then on down to the river run for a little pump, through to the quarter pipe.. repeat repeat repeat until something breaks or gets damaged:) They should have these parks everywhere... best memories and perfect for kids like us who were off the rails with nowhere to go. There was also a small metal quarter/pipe ramp to the left of the top bank which was tops for airing out of the back off - but sadly wasnt there for long.

I skated there from the mid 80s to the early 90s. I lived in London but would come down to Bristol every couple of months. There were a bunch of us from the UK hardcore punk scene all skating together. We weren’t that good to be honest but it was just a great place to hang out. I stopped skating when drumming became too important to risk an injury. Shame but got lots of great memories.
