The ADAC let me use their place so that I could test in a safe, controlled environment. Thank you ADAC Paderborn!
Test Parameters:
My weight: w/gear: 90-95kg / 200-210lb.
Ride Mode: Dynamic
Lean Angle: Guessing around 44°+ because BMW app didn't record it - set at default 😥
Surface Area: ADAC Test track, flat, smooth, clean surface, can't get any better than that!

My weight: with gear on & with some gear in the bags: 90-95kg / 200-210lb. If you add more weight & compress the suspension more, then results may vary. Bike settings: Dynamic Mode. (Road Mode, which lowers the suspension = result may vary) Lean Angle: don't know, I didn't have the BMW app set to record short rides but if I had to guess, it was around 45+° when the bar touched down.

I have the same crash bars on my RT 1250. But as I have lower down my foot pegs with wunderlich equipment device (about 2cm) it’s my foot pegs that touch the ground instead 😊

I have accepted that crash bars are always to protect in a low speed or garage drops. In high speed drops or impact don’t bother to see if the bars will save your bike. More to worry about than your bike in such a crash…..yourself!

Nice video, Scott. You are brave to do such a demonstration. I recall reading about this same issue with the Wunderlich crash bars touching the pavement when I was looking at various manufacturers of bars for my bike last February. I have purchased many items from Wunderlich in the past and even visited their South Carolina store to be fitted for and purchase my Helite vest. But because of this “Problem”, I purchased and installed Ilium front and rear crash bars. I am very pleased with Ilium’s quality and customer support. I even spoke with the owner of Ilium when I had a question about taking off the “RT” side panel. His advice worked perfectly. Another video idea - review various airbag vests. Ride safe.

I use MachineArt Moto's X-Head cylinder covers instead of engine bars on my R1250RS. Provides tip-over and roll-over-onto-side protection without impeding lean angle or looks. Hitting a hard part during being leaned over might cause a wheel to unbalance and send you tumbling.

since your crash bars are add ons, all you have to do now for peace of mind is to replace your foot peg "feelers" with longer ones... so that you know when you are about to scrape hard parts with all the associated risks....OR, make sure that you use your sport mode with lean angle display and stay away from whatever lean angle the scraped crash bar came up to! thank you for making a vid on this specific topic! always informative!!

I'll never buy a Rt but still was amazed by your test. Scientific approach to scratching pegs, I love it. If i was you i would remove immediately those bars and look for something different for protection, hitting hard on those bars would mean crashing for sure.

This was a great video and collective comments, and replies. Reminds me of late MCN publication from States. Our best results come from measuring everything and documenting in the best fashion, such as your video stops and examine in detail what is really happening. In a younger lifetime we would often get together a lightly used side of a local airport and make lean angle moves at increasingly higher speeds via arranging and re arranging the cones, in preparation to "timing" our mountain runs on the weekends. In the end everyone became converts to really long feelers, which usually were ground down and re lengthened every two "timing sessions" in the mountains. Saved a lot of body ( fairing and personal) damage. Thanks

Great video, congratulations. Tuned in because I'm trying to decide whether to fit crash bars to my 1250. I have the machineArt covers on at the moment for a sort of minimum protection. I guess scraping the bars is not so much of a problem - it would only be if you put so much weight on them in the corner they start to lever the tyres off the tarmac!

Great video, definitely food for thought on this subject. My initial thought is explain this to a local machinist, Germany has plenty, and see what they can come up with. It might turn into something they want to start offering out of the factory in Berlin, or that you could hawk yourself, nice side project (maybe even with their blessings, I mean, you kinda got'm square on this one lol).

I have an 1250 RS, basically similar engine/chassis configuration, but with OEM BMW crash bars, and I think they don’t stick out as much as the Wunderlich you are using, and that’s why you’re touching the pavement with them. I haven’t tried to play with them, but I can visually see the foot peg tip sticking out from it. Good video as always and by the way, you are the reason I bought the RS, 😊

Found your video's as I'm considering buying a 1250RT LE, and I'm coming from an ST1300. On the ST, the crash bars touch before the pegs. On my old SV650, I had bungs fitted, so the foot pegs touched way before the bungs. I and friends would regularly grind pegs, and the ST has a little mark under the plastic cover, too. My take on the RT... hard parts are probably touching tarmac if you want to get rid of the strips anyway. I'd rather it be crash bars than cylinder heads.
@WatermarquePaul
@WatermarquePaul Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, not sure about that. I have the same RT model and have been considering crash bars. However I recall many years back on another bike touching the bars down, granted at much higher speed than 19mph and down I went due to the rear wheel lifting. A useful demo though, thank you.

Recently i changed my oem foot pegs with after market and the new ones had two pairs of underneath bolts , smaller for my model and longer for the cbr model. I assume because they cbr footpegs are higher.Maybe replacing the bolts your footpegs have with a litle longer you will solve the problem reducing though a bit the maximum leane angle
@Marc-zf3xv
@Marc-zf3xv Жыл бұрын
It's disappointing the bars scrape first. I suppose, other than different bars you could lower the footpegs or perhaps add a longer feeler? Of course hanging off a bit more would reduce overall lean angle but not overall turn in speed. Tough situation but I know it would freak me out worrying about the bars hitting.

Nice. Well crash bars will also be there on a scrap in the autobahn 130 or 120kmh speed and as long as your bike keeps going without crashing against anything else it will erode the bars. Maybe your pannier will scrap too. I speak based on real life experience. Take care.

I have the normal screen on mine. It's 4"/100mm taller than the sport screen. I never use the screen in the full up position, I normally have it about 50% way up, so I guess I'd use the sport in about the 75% up position. I did ride an one with a sport screen but since the screen is infinitely adjustable I just put it in the spot I liked and didn't notice a difference. BUT when there was cross wind I got some whistling noise at a certain speed and I don't notice that on the normal screen. So maybe it does matter 🤷‍♂️

Nope, it was one speed all the way around the circle. No braking done or even off throttle. This is why I showed the one view of the entire circle and how I was going around it twice in the video. BTW the Telelever front on the RT has no "dive" even while braking hard.

Hello Scott, I own a 2021 1250 RT fitted with Wunderlich front and rear crash bars. On my bike, the footpegs always touch first. On flat ground, this happens at a 41-42° lean angle. The crash bars touch the ground at about 44-45° lean angle. This is with DYNAMIC suspension mode. What lean angle did your BMW app record when your crash bars touched the ground ? Keep the good work up, love your channel.

Don't know, didn't turn on recording of small/short rides and needless to say this was not a long ride around a short circle :) On the street I'm usually in the high 30's lean but I can imagine that during this test I was around 45°+ because of the almost lack of chicken strips. But I've done 47+ on my 900XR on the street and still had chicken strips and they are the same exact tires, well Road 5 GT and not the 6 GT. And yes, I was in Dynamic mode and well you see the footage. So I wonder why you are touching the foot pegs before the bars...hmm. Maybe I'm a lot lighter than you: LOL! take care, Scott
