He did a wonderful job for us. That 2005/2006 season in particular was amazing. I guess his success with us, and the praise that he deservedly received at the time, went to his head and made him arrogant.

@@JohnCollins the move to Man City with their riches (I think they spent a fair bit of money even before the takeover that summer) inflated his ego. He then thought that he was too good for Fulham afterwards. I remember when City pursued Lescott, he called Everton a small club. I think Stoke’s League Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool in 2016, kind of brought him and his ego crashing down, and made him realise that he’d never win any silverware as a manager.

Met Mark Hughes, who happens to be my all time favorite United player. I remember thinking how his fitness and strength radiated from him, as did his decency . You can’t say that very often in the contemporary game. Couldn’t agree more about football beyond the top tier being refreshing.

well said Sam about the ref's decision at City the other week.. normally they allow play to go on without flags until play stops.. infuriating for fans & players im sure & makes people wonder what the linesman's job is exactly nowadays.. i can only think VAR mentioned something in the ref's ear to distract his thoughts & he suddenly reversed what he had done. i cannot think what else could've overruled his initial decision.... but back to topic.. thanks Mark for your time & efforts at City.. you got us some great players.. the intensity of Bellamy & Tevez upfront.. would we have had Yaya without Kolo ?? and only 7 million for Vinny who turned out to be one of the best defenders the premier league ever saw.. and btw Mark, you were a top player & great volley in the 5-1 !!

Mark Hughes was one of the best football players in Manchester United history. I remember when names started to appear on the back of shirts, my dad got me a man united shirt with Hughes on the back and i wanted to cry lol then sparky left united 6 months later lol! but players from all teams in those days all wanted to win and fought hard, now you don't see any honest 50-50's most are afraid of being hurt or their hairband flying off.

Listening to Sparky talking here. This is why Zabaleta and Kompany are underrated legends of the Premier league not just Man City. The impact they made as a centre back (bought as midfielder) and a right back. If they made the equivalent impact from CAM or LW, people wouldn't stop talking about them. Imagine a world where Lewandoski and Zabaleta signed for Blackburn Rovers, and Kompany signed for City for the project and the takeover never happened. Its only timing and "good" / "bad" luck, that doesn't put Zabaleta and Kompany on the same level as Kante and Salah Everyone looks at Zabaleta and Kompany as 2 of the great players from the first era of the man City era.. but they were already there before 💪 Zabaleta, kompany, toure, aguero and silva - pep - ederson, walker, Stones, gundogan, de Bruyne, thats the 2 intervals of the city era
