From what I've read, in CD manufacturing the disc is pressed like a Vynal record and covered with metal on top to reflect the lazer. And if we could reapply the metal layer we could save the disc as it were, as the data is stamped onto the plastic in hills and valleys. So from what I gather even if the top layer rots away the data is still there just unreadable. I had always assumed the data lived on the metal between the plastic and metal. But it lives on the bottom of the disc.

just to specify. The error correcting code is known as reed solomon. The laser doesn't "read" the missing data but instead the drive notices and finds the error/bad spot. Then it continues reading and repairs the data that was missing from the reed solomon error correcting code from that portion of the disc. If it's completely unreadable and unrepairable. The drive kinda gives up and continues reading. This might lead to a skip or dropout depending on the severity. You know it's rot when the problem occours toward the end of the disc ( last songs) because the laser reads from the inside out.

Whether it's disc rot or not one would have to have the disc examined when it's new and then re-examined when it's old. Run the disc through Nero Disc Speed to check how much problem the holes produce. I think the holes are in fact disc rot. The metallic layer has very thin covering from the label side and it's the faults/scratches/damage of the label side that is responsible for disc rot. Of course factory processes may have something to do with it as well. Probably impurities in metal may cause disc rot too, or other imperfections during production. Disc rot on double-layered DVDs is another matter. I've read some articles about rotting of the second layer, that is the semi-transparent layer of the DVD, which occurred due to poor quality of the resin used to make this layer. As far as I know the metallic layer in DVDs is much better protected by thicker plastic from the label side. It would be interesting to see the comparison of disc rot of metal layer in DVDs vs CDs, since the DVDs seem to have the upper hand.

The holes are not disc rot. The holes are most likely there due to improper storage (disc binders) and just improper handling of the discs. Basically the label has been scratched off.

Very interesting explanation, since it indicates that it is rather an exception and not a rule, after all, after producing many discs, the printing conditions can vary, as well as the data to be printed, but, i have a question: Exactly how does the sunlight affect? I say this because in my case I have my discs inside their cases receiving sunlight from a sunny window (bright indirect sunlight) In theory, the ultraviolet light from sunlight it only affects CD / DVD / BD-R or RW, the ROMs that use video games, films and music use a aluminium layer instead of a dye-based layer that uses he R and RW versions So... what are you based on to say that the sun produces disc rot?
@NotOrdinaryInGames3 жыл бұрын
All sunlight does is attack (a strong but accurate word) everything it touches. So, under strong direct sunlight, for a long enough time, the lacquer part of the disk starts do break down, and have microscopic cracks. Through those cracks, oxygen and water vapor get in. And THAT causes the rusting of the metal layer. It is always visible to the naked eye, as a silver or bronze discoloration.
@angelmarquez44033 жыл бұрын
@@NotOrdinaryInGames I understand, then ... the cases do not protect from the effects of sunlight? More than anything I say it because in my case a bright, but not direct sunlight comes to me from the window (basically it bounces off a white wall, goes through a glass or has the curtain through) and it makes me wonder if it is a good idea to have them in there for what you comment. Could it cause damage? SMERKUZHEO G I know this is pretty old and I dunno if you ever found an answer to your concerns, but in case you didn't or just for anyone else that's worried, I'll give my own anecdote on this. I collect a few games and have something like 200 physical PS3 games and about 350 PS4 games, about 30 or so Xbox One games. All blu rays, and I'd say about 1 in 10 have see through pin holes in them. With most it's just one or two holes, but my copy of GTAV on PS4 has several tiny ones. I've yet to encounter any issues installing or playing any of these discs, and most were bought brand new and had the holes already there right out of the packaging. I believe it must just be a manufacturing defect. Most of my Wii U discs have holes as well, and I know it's extremely common for Wii U discs to have them. They're a propriety disc so it might have something to do with how they're manufactured. Again, no issues playing them. From my experience, the only times I've had discs not work for me is when they have severe scratches, or the laser in the console doesn't like the disc for whatever reason (my PS3 super slim has never been able to read my Deus Ex disc even though it plays on my other 2 PS3s fine). I've not had a disc fail due to pinholes yet. HOWEVER, I have had one disc (old PC game) actually develop a see through area near the centre of the disc, which did make it not fully readable and unable to ever be fully installed again. It looked very different to the pin holes I'm used to, it was pretty big and still had some faded areas of the label still intact inside the see through area. I'm unsure if it was disc rot, but it was pretty dirty in the area where the damage was, I imagine for quite some time before I noticed. I used to kinda abuse my games as a kid, and this disc was about 20 years old. Anyway, if you're still worried, I recommend using a program that checks disc integrity such as VSO inspector. Not a lot of computers have blu ray lasers in their disc drives though so it may be hard to check those. Also keep in mind that even if a program can 100% read the disc with 0 errors, the laser in your console may be weaker and might encounter issues even if the disc can be read by a different laser. I don't think this is common though and it's never happened to me. I regularly use VSO inspector on pre owned PS2 games I buy to ensure they're fine without fully playing through them.
