We filmed Olivier Latry improvising at Notre Dame in late 2011, and this film is part of the award-winning DVD boxset "The Genius of Cavaillé-Coll", available to buy at: fuguestatefilms.co.uk/product...
It was shocking to see recent photos and footage of the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris in flames. What a testament to the skill of the cathedral's builders that although the roof and spire burned off, most of the vault held, and what an extraordinary miracle that the cathedral's main organ seems to be completely untouched by fire, water or smoke. In fact, according to the organ builder who has just looked over the instrument, the temperature in the organ never went above 17 Celsius!
This is a huge relief. The organ at Notre Dame, although rebuilt by many people, is still most indelibly imprinted by the artistry of Cavaillé-Coll, even though most of the pipework was by earlier builders. Among his hundreds of instruments, Notre Dame was unique. In no other organ did he create a similar scheme, with its progressive mixtures and complete sets of mutations and batteries of reeds, all on the grandest of scales. The sound of the organ is rivetingly powerful. There were no problems here with projecting the sound out of the case, as there were at St Sulpice. It's a shame it has been much altered since 1865, but those alterations cannot hide Cavaillé-Coll's work. On which note, our filming at Notre Dame in late 2011 was a sort of heritage moment in itself, as shortly after we left the Cochereau-era console was replaced in the latest round of renovations to the organ.

I do wonder how many will agree, but surely this organ is the greatest in the world! Parts of it go back as far as the cathedral itself, it can make any sound from a splashing mixture, lush strings, snarly reeds and biting, screaming chamades that always come in at the end. These sounds can go anywhere in volume from barely audible to utterly deafening. People say the very stones of the cathedral sound like they are alive and singing when it stops playing. This is a truly godly instrument. When the fire happened I was so sad, my only hope is that one day I will be able to hear it personally

@@christianlongobardi5438 The st Sulpice organ was larger as built, however the grand organ of Notre Dame now has 115 stops as compared to st Sulpice's 102. Both instruments are different and I think they have their own appeals.

I can't disagree more. The alterations made to this organ devalued it greatly. It just sounds bad. Majority of this Latry improvisation sounds like synth. For me personally, this sound is terrible. St. Sulpice on the other hand couldn't be more different. That organ is basically untouched, all the stops nicely blend together, what a pleasure to listen that organ is. For me, St. Sulpice, St. Ouen, St. Sernin, St. Maximin la Ste Baume... and that's just France, Riga dom Walcker organ sounds much better as well. And it's not even a slight difference as others say (again, imo, but quite objectively too).

I strongly recommend this DVD, it is wonderful as are all of Fugue State Films' DVDs. As for this performance, although I am not all that attracted to this particular improvisation in the current French church organist style, I am always greatly impressed by Latry's virtuosity and musicality. It is interesting to watch the stop changes.

@Yaledmot
@Yaledmot 5 жыл бұрын
That is fascinating. The Voix Humaine is used a bit later, without tremulant. I wonder if it is not a Voix Humaine (box closed) with a mutation of some sort. Roth uses the Voix Humaine at St. Sulpice unto itself in various recordings (with a very nervous tremulant.)
@haldentoyorganist3896
@haldentoyorganist3896 5 жыл бұрын
The registration is just a use of mutations stops (or just one) by itself. They are tuned to perfect ratios to the "unison" (8' pitch). Which makes them perfecty in tune. A perfectly tuned major 3rd is actually quite flat compared to what most people are used to. So it gives a highly unusual effect to use a Tierce or a Septieme by themselves due to the flatness....

Johan Brand The same reason we no longer use horse and buggies, and are moving toward electric cars. Of course history is valuable and special, and we wouldn’t have this organ without it. But there is no reason not to continue to innovate using current technologies. After all, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll was revolutionary for his orchestral approach to voicing and use of Barker levers in the 19th century. There is a room in this world for both the organ of St-Sulpice as well as that of Notre Dame.

This particular console was a bit of a monstrosity. Far too high and apparently quite shaky and eventually almost falling apart. The Cochereau console was old and worn out. Filled with technology that didn't stand the test of time. It was also prepared for a vast expansion of the organ that never came to be, so it wasn't practical. The CC was indeed magnificent to look at. However, it was made for an 86 stop organ, not a 116 stop. Reusing the CC format might have been an option, but I doubt that it could have worked for the instrument as it eventually developed. Also keep in mind that a console isn't just there to look impressive, it's a workplace that must be practical, sensible and safe.
