Maybe Don't Defund the BBC? | Interview with Nish Kumar

Can the BBC be trusted to fight for its own survival? Television has become ground zero in the reactionary backlash against liberal norms and, for some reason, current affairs comedy has found itself in the crossfires. This week on Downstream Ash Sarkar met with Nish Kumar - comedian and host of The Mash Report - to talk about how he became the accidental face of the Defund the BBC movement, and why rightwing comics are the real snowflakes.

I'm only here to gloat. Getting sacked by the BBC for being neither funny, entertaining or informative and having really low viewer ratings is literally the funniest thing Nish Kumar has ever done. He's a really weak impersonation of John Oliver.

Great insight from Nish. I'm not overly bowled over by his comedy style, but his factual observations are always spot on. It's amazing how many bad-faith actors pop up in social media comments trying to claim the BBC is a behemoth institution that silences free debate, whilst simultaneously being nonplussed by the unchallenged reach of Murdoch. He will silence those debates more than the BBC ever has. You're essentially saying public-owned broadcasting has to die because you don't like the license fee. What happened to arguments of reform?

So we see Nish Kumar's parting shot at his unfunny show being dropped - he shows the viewer his 'hilarious' screen, showing his 'hilarious' parting shot - the screen which says 'Boris is a racist and a liar' - sums him up: not funny and spiteful. Britain deserves better than divisive grifters like this person.

I think the issue is 'the divisive grifters' on the left, are comedians, taking the piss, usually out of genuine failings of those in power. 'The divisive grifters' on the right, are in journalism, TV and news in general.

On the topic of the BBC, I love the idea of a publicly owned broadcaster and they have produced some phenomenal content, but I think it is too easy for the government to influence it. Perhaps a democratic consumer Co-operative model for the organization would fix this

Public anger over BBC comedy reflects a deep sense of injustice for a monolith indifferent to that anger which can be see in the copy-n-paste responses to complaints over years. To conservatives such comedy feels actually really offensive in that it's always the sneering congregation of the righteous poking fun at all the usual suspects - ordinary folk

I think another thing is that any self identifying right wing comedian puts the politics before the jokes and work backwards from there. Which is hilarious since that's what their accusations of 'BBC comedy' are. They're not actually thinking about getting a genuine laugh at that point, hence it feels forced and fake.

I’m not convinced, I’m very left wing but can’t stand overly left wing comedians, especially the ones on the panel shows. It’s incredibly predictable and boring, Brexit joke, trump joke... it’s all so safe predictable and dull. the best comedians are the ones who take the piss out of both left and right wing, don’t care who they offend and generally do it less obviously.

Though, I do think Jezza had a lot more amazing things than yourselves and a lot of lefties don't give credit it to, strategy may have been awful, but the heart and purpose was in the right place, which matters most. No to mention the BBC bias attacking him from all angles. Don't let the haters get you down, they just have hatred within themselves they project on to you. The police in colonial India and even in current India, along with the criminal justice system can completely fuck up your life if they want to on a whim. Your grandparents would have had experiences were British used law for effective oppression. In such a scenario having lawyers as relatives is useful. Especially when the process is punishment in itself even if you are pronounced not guilty in the end. The other side of this is that it gves you power to fuck over other people and if you are actually aware you would know that there is nothing better that we would than maintain social hierarchies
