I had the immense honor of creating some official presets for the new Novation AFX STATION that come with the device! Here is an overview of them while skipping through and tinkering with them a bit. All sounds are coming directly from the AFX STATION and its internal sequencer, only a touch of reverb was added where i found it suitable. Enjoy!

The sound design here is top notch. Really interesting rhythmic textures and timbres evocative of Aphex and Warps late 90's and early 2000 output. I hear alot of Autechre in there. Now to just combine some of those harsh industrial sounding rhythms with a couple of those detuned microtonal lead and pad sounds and you've got your track halfway there.

an honor to hear that man, really appreciate it! It was actually quite a lot of fun to work on them. Hope the patches can inspire people to elaborate on them or maybe just serve as examples what’s possible with the device. Funny that you mention Autechre since i actually never listened to them, will definitely have to do so 😊

Awesome sounds. The AFX Station is blurring the boundaries between a classic analogue synth and a modular due to its many modulation features. It feels to me like it is covering about 80% of what a modular system can deliver in a musical usable manner. Just love it and feel much gratitude to own one. A real keeper.

Hopefully this project came along with some musical hours spent together with Aphex Twin. As I’m digging your sound I’ve got the hunch that you spent many hours listening to this musical mastermind and adore his sound as much as I do. They chose the right one to contribute To this project. Makes me feel really happy for you!

man, thank you so much for the kind words! That really means a lot to me! Sure, like many others, i was and still am quite influenced by Aphex, among many other great artists out there, so it clearly shows in my musical taste and style. And no, unfortunately this project didn’t include meetings in person, haha 😆 For me, it’s already such a great honor to even being asked to participate, still so stoked about this! I‘m just so happy that i could contribute a tiny bit to this and share it with others.

Such a bummer, but you’re totally right. It would just have been an extra plus to share the room and exchange some words and jam with this legend. Congrats one more time. Maybe I should finally crawl out of my autistic hole and start sharing my work as well 🤔 I think you inspired me... it’s about Time to show people what I am doing, Even if that’s totally not my thing. I’m really shy about stuff like that and spend my time alone with the machines.

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! You’re right, it’s almost vowel like stuff. Actually this surprised me as well. It’s not that i thought „let’s make some vowels“, it more or less happend during the sounddesign process while tweaking random parameters, so it was actually a happy accident, haha 😅 i found it quite interesting how sonically versatile and surprising it is so this patch made its way to the final bunch of patches for the machine. I‘m sure some smart people can exactly explain why it sounds how it sounds but for me it was just fun to explore. Cheers!

@@matthewbucknall8350 really appreciate it man! It’s definitely a really fun machine to play with! Just to let you know, these patches are also available for the Bass Station 2 via novation components, for free! Just in case you can’t get your hands onto an AFX Station

@@PerplexOn oh i have no idea about any of that, first of all, thanks for responding, and second, i mean like what is a patch and how did you make one?
@PerplexOn
@PerplexOn 3 жыл бұрын
a patch is just a custom setting of various available parameters of the machine. Either you or other artists have created these presets that can be loaded into your machine, resulting in different sounds. If you want to create your own one you can take a initial setting of the synth or any other premade patch, tweak knobs and settings to your liking and save it as your very own patch.

@@PerplexOn oh ok that makes sense. i was thinking of buying it (because all i have is a DAW) but its pretty expensive. also i like your music!

thanks man, really appreciate it! You definitely can achieve this kind of sounds with software plugins and your DAW, too, no question. You may just search for sounddesign tutorials that match your current setup to start with. There are even some great free software synths out there, so you don’t have to spend a lot.

Gotta say that the synth sounds nice but I am left with this, it is just a glitch machine and nothing else as 90% of this showcase was glitch.

That’s just because this video showcases the few glitchy presets i‘ve created for it, which demonstrate a little fraction of all patches coming with it. 😉Besides ALL patches ever made for the Bass Station, which actually spread across a vast variety of sonic possibilities. Definitely check out the other artists patches like Lightbath and rBeny on their channels.

"Too many sheep and not enough shepherds." - Richard D James ??? What is this fascination with various artists within electronica, that causes so many to stagnate within a particular style of another? My creations are nothing special, but they're 100% me, - I'd hate to have spent hours, perhaps days, working on something, for someone to say, - Hey, that sounds just like Jack Dangers. - I understand how we're all influenced by others, but when it just becomes clone-like emulation, I lose all interest. Not having a pop at anyone, least of all Perplex On, I sub to this channel and enjoy the content, - I just always felt the Sheep Vs Shepherds analogy was spot on... especially within the electronica sphere. Love to ALL, feel no hate

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! While i do get your point that every artist wants to be recognized for his/her own style and voice, i personally have no problems with people saying my stuff is sounding like artist xy, especially when i‘m highly influenced by this very one (among many others!). Or maybe my ego isn’t just as big enough, quite possible. 😊 But let me assure you that everything i make is 100% myself, too. And a sidenote regarding this project in particular: i nor any other contributing artists i assume ever wanted to „clone-emulate“ a certain RDJ but rather create interesting, inspiring, unusual patches that fit this rather experimental genre while being true to their individual taste and style at the same time. Neither more nor less. Actually i think the electronic music genre is at least if not an even more versatile, multi-layered and complex genre compared to many other musical genres. And not everybody will do „aphexy“ songs with this machine despite it’s named after him 😉 In the end, AFX is a household name that helps raising attention and selling it, and i am absolutely honored that i got the chance to create patches that other people can now experience, too! Cheers!

@@atommachine Too true, - Currently, I blame the internet and social media for most of the stagnation within the sub/counter culture phenomena. - For a long time there was an 11yr cycle that existed within the youth/cultural expression field, that came about after the world wars... It started in '55 with Elvis and prescription drugs like Quaalude's, Valium, opiates etc. In '66 we reached the heights of the psychedelic revolution. '77 saw the birth of Punk, with Speed and Heroin being the substances of choice, - those were the days, yes I'm that old. In '88 we had Acid House, MDMA, - where we inadvertently developed the chemical sound for the chemical compound - LSD. And in '99 the internet came along, and the youth got sidetracked into a virtual world of mediocrity, a world so full of noise, even the innovators have a hard time getting heard... btw, I love this guy's visuals, very bespoke... Not too sure about the synthesizer though, it looks much better without the blue, and the oscillators sound great, - but the filter always feels a bit lacking, - though if I wasn't retired and watching my pennies, I'd probably buy one... There's just too much choice at the moment. stay safe, be well
