A comparison between the Novation Circuit Rhythm and Akai MPC One. They're two very different standalone samplers / grooveboxes, and that's exactly why I figured it would be helpful to compare them.

I’ve tried maschine mk2, mpc live,touch, one, 1000,500, 2000xl, sp404, sp404sx, sp202, digitakt, op-1, circuit, circuit tracks, and rhythm. I don’t own all of those now just the notations and op-1. I might sell the tracks or original circuit. The circuits are fantastic because they are portable and easy to learn. I realized that learning my daw was a better option than learning a mpc. The op-1 is so portable it’s ridiculous. Digitakt is fantastic in its simplicity and simultaneous depth. It only suffers because of the buttons and lack of battery power. All the Mpcs are complex and capable machines but they require a lot of time. I spend my time learning my daw when I’m in the studio. In my living room I use a circuit. On a trip or at the park I use the op-1. It’s nice to focus on making music rather than learning the equipment

The Novation has always been something I’ve flirted with but it’s limitations have always held me back from a purchase. The portability is what draws me. It’s definitely up next just need to touch it first. Great vid per usual 😎✊🏾

Before buying my MPC, I remember reading that it only had 8 Audio Tracks, and I like to record guitars and vocals in my tracks...But with the way the MPC is, and how I only tend to record guitar, vocal, etc parts in like 4 or 8 bars at a time, maybe 16 at the most.. the amount of tracks is virtually unlimited for me. I haven't even recorded in the area for the 8 audio tracks. Recording with the Looper and assigning them to pads is not only easy, but even breeds more creativity with manipulation opportunities.

Greetings, thank for for all the very informative videos, it’s bee a lot of help. I’m new to stand-alone gear and after researching for a month or more, ams still confused with all the options. What I am looking for: 1. Stand-alone, do not ever need a computer (I only have and use iPad, I do use garage band and another mastering app) 2. Minimal and simplistic foot print. 3. No screen preference but not deal breaker. 4. Ability to live sample into a live song creation using bass guitar, and/or keys, and vinyl. 5. Ability to switch “scenes” at the press of a button. 6. Ability to connect MIDI keyboard 7. Some level of synth manipulations but not overly complex. Stand alone that I’ve liked the sound of most in demos: Digitone, MPC one, some of the Roland 101 but some Roland also sounds a little….video game-like to me. Love the MPC hip hop style sounds but also like the more ambient type beats. Notations are super tempting but I have not liked all of the sounds I’ve on them, some are really good though, like the more ambient electronic sounding stuff which is the direction I want to go next. I was thinking maybe the best solution is one of the notations combined with something else? Longer samples is pretty important so that I can record a 8-16 measure song form and then layer things, similar to a looper pedal only I would walk over and press a button and then play on my instrument. I wonder how the notation (either rhythm or tracks), would pair up with the Roland 101 for doing what I want. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the great videos! -nathan

You're pretty much on point here. MPC has so many things going on, it would be hard to fly around on it like you would the Circuit. The touchscreen doesn't really help either since you can't rely on muscle memory like you would buttons. Still, I love the MPC one and the recent updates are great, especially the drum program updates like drum effects, pitch envelope and randomisation pages. Regarding live performance, I think the MPC is better at sequencing gear and finishing tracks. It would be hard to use it on it's own to do a full live set. I would say the mute tracks and mute groups, xy pad are great tools to do live sets with

I think this was a good feature comparison video that gets into the technical side of what the devices are capable of. However, I feel it didn't quite touch on the philosophical differences and how that might influence your creative process. What are you planning on doing with the device? Is the goal to replace a DAW, sketch out song ideas, perform live, or a combination of those things? Without having owned either of the two devices, I'd say that the MPC is geared more towards those who are looking to build complete songs outside of a computer DAW. It's much more capable and robust in that sense. The Circuit, on the other hand, seems more geared towards idea generation and quickly jamming out a new beat as quickly as possible, but where you're more likely to want to rebuild it from scratch in a DAW once you've got a solid song sketch laid out. I realize you can of course make a proper song on the Circuit too, but it just feels too limited compared to the MPC. So basically, what part of the creative process are you looking to optimize with the hardware? If it's idea generation, I'd say go with something like the Circuit, or Digitakt or Model:Samples, depending on your budget. But if it's to intentionally step away from the computer for a much greater part of the song creation process, and you're less interested in in-the-moment improvisation, then the Akai MPC One seems to offer the best "DAW-less" bang for the buck than any of the competition out there today.

Great video for people new to samplers. The Circuit is perfect at its price point and loads more fun than the MPC (to create full song length drum and bass tracks for instance) but if you want a studio in a box obviously the MPC (or super expensive Maschine Standalone) is the way to go. I'd say there's definite room for a more powerful/expensive Circuit sampler offering straight ahead time stretching, polyphony, and including a couple of the killer Circuit Tracks features such as the amazing scale functionality and polyphonic control of external sound sources. But let's face it the multitracker and sequencing on the MPC could have been loads more user-friendly. Maschine is just easier, but the price is just ridiculous. As a complete non-sequitur a Circuit-based multitrack recorder would also be amazing so I never have to deal with the Verselab or the like. Nothing beats the circuit workflow. It's super clever, super fast, and super musical. EDIT: oh yeah and that super circuit sampler would also need some sort of equivalente to the 16-levels thing which is just super musical and needed.

I've been wanting something I can use to compose and finish songs on, not really something for live performance. So I've been looking at things like the MPC One, Akai Force, and Synthstrom Deluge. The Circuits look fun, but aren't really in the category I need. And the MPC seems awesome for sample / chop / drum purposes, but I'm not a huge fan of the pattern-based structure it uses with hard partitions between song sections. Am hoping for more of an Ableton-like "clips on a timeline" workflow. So that mostly narrows it down to Akai Force or Synthstrom Deluge. Maybe someday I'll actually get one. :P
@electrosonicnebula
@electrosonicnebula 3 жыл бұрын
Actually the Circuit workflow has been compared to Ableton's clips and is considered the hardware no-screen equivalent. But yeah for composing a full song the Circuits are not quite there due to memory and polyphony limitations yet (unless they make a Circuit multitracker which would just be awesome). You can make a drum and bass rhythm track and even sample some chords on the Circuit Tracks no problem though. Any sort of extended vocal track would eat up the memory. You could use one pack per song but you'd still be seriously pushing it and would have to seriously loop vocals. That 3 minutes is gonna go fast even for a song based on loops and samples.

@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 2 жыл бұрын
@@hvhvgitaar I guess I forgot to update the post, but I eventually got an Akai Force, and it's exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted something Ableton-like but standalone and Linux-friendly, and it's both. With a bit of light modding, it can run all sorts of custom stuff, like the midi remapper daemon I wrote a couple years ago for my notebook. I'm still barely scratching the surface, but if you're curious how I'm doing with it, I've already got a couple Force-based songs up on my channel. The Falafel Song was what I made the day the Force arrived, and the most recent at the moment is Lazy River. I'm loving the workflow, which is unusual in that it feels less like work and more like flow, so songs come together really quickly. Just record clips, maybe tweak them a bit, then play them into an arrangement... and voila, it's a song. Then I can do a quick render, and rsync the files to my computer over wifi.

But the MPC One gives you the features of a Circuit Tracks plus a Circuit Rhythm and much more, so it’s better value for money by a long way. It's definitely something I thought about, but I had the MV-1 on loan and didn't have time to film anything before I had to send it back. The main thing, though, is just the fact that the Rhythm is newer and I wanted to try to cover as many aspects of it as possible while it's still fresh in people's minds. Here are my super brief thoughts on the MV-1 vs the MPC though: The MPC blow the MV-1 out of the water in terms of features (sampling, effects, and now it even has vocal processing). If you're going off of sheer power and flexibility, the MPC is the clear choice. The MV-1 is still a good device though, and would be a good option for someone who wants something more portable (it's MUCH lighter and possible to power via USB) and something with the Roland sound engine.

I never got into the new MPCs so I can't speak to that. I primarily use a Digitakt. It's my favorite thing. And I had never used any Circuit before I got the Rhythm. But I can confirm that it's surprisingly intuitive, especially for something without a screen. It's also smaller and sturdier than I had assumed. I really like it so far. I think if I had to make a comparison, what it reminds me a lot of is the PO33, which I think is a great little sampler.

@CoolDougLove
@CoolDougLove 3 жыл бұрын
Nah, I think the PO 33 is the better comparison but that might just be down to personal use. From where I'm sitting, the PO 33 has a more usable sequencer and can also handle samples in a slice mode or a keyboard mode. On the 404 you need to slice samples by putting pieces on different pads and you can't play samples chromatically or properly pitch them at all. The 404 can also sample in stereo and isn't limited to 220 seconds of total sample time like you are on the Circuit Rhythm. I guess both the 404 and the Rhythm can act as fx processors but the grid fx remind me more of the punch in fx...except as far as I know you can't sequence them. I have owned an SP 404. I own a Circuit Rhythm. I have my issues with it. But I prefer it to the 404. I think it's cool but not for me. I've also got a Digitakt which is another 8 track mono sampling drum machine. But what it reminds me of most is the PO 33.

I mentioned that a few times! The devices are super different despite a few similarities, which is exactly why I thought they'd be worth comparing. Hopefully this will help people see exactly what they can get if they spend more and whether that's worth it for them.

@@GabeMillerMusic I just opted out of a Legowelt edition Polyend Tracker (same price as a One and also has a screen) I had reserved, to get the Rhythm instead and it was partly because of your videos/love of Circuits. ;) It should be here today!

I’ll add that it’s actually pretty easy to find the MPC One for less than retail if you’re willing to go used. I just picked one up nearly brand new for $550.

@@jaredforney2372 i also picked up a like new, used 3 times, one for $570. It's a beast and at times makes me question everything I'm doing with music. I love it though.

Yeah the MPC One is twice the price, but it's basically both a Tracks and a Rhythm....no?

Pretty much, just not nearly as portable, and some might not find it as hands on, depending on personal preference.

This is not a fair comparison. The circuit is mono with little sample time and lacking so many features. The Mpc is powerful, not the best workflow but it runs circles around the circuit. I do like the workflow of the circuit much better than the Mpc one.

Yes get the circuit rhythm if your blind so you can learn it. Cuz it looks so confusing and I’m a pianist lol

This like comparing a skateboard against a BMW, the mpc beats the rhythm in every way, I have a rhythm and a mpc force and trying to figure out how fast i can sell the rhythm, If money is the problem buy and deal with the rhythm if you have the money on mpc

Charging/powering the MPC One thru the USB port isnt a good idea. Just get a battery pack with the correct cable. My man here did it and it works perfect. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLF-rLOe362vppc.html

I don't see a comparison. $399.99 for limited, no lcd or read out groove box, vs and actual pro level, touch screen, beast MPC ONE at just $659.00 ? You're not going to scrape up $260.00 more for an MPC ONE? Instead, waste $400.00 be limited with no real 'read out' data? I will never grasp the love of the Circuit boxes! That's a lot of money for what it is IMHO. You are so close to buying superior products. I skipped Novation on count it is a $199 to $299.00 product selling at $399.00. It's got a following for sure, but why? Not wasting money to find out. LOL.

Meh, I've got an ipad and surface pro but still want a groovdbox. Virtual knobs aren't very satisfying to tweak.
