Your polytunnel is just gorgeous and I cannot believe how much you are growing in it! Try not to have too many regrets, you have done amazingly with it. Things can always be better in everything we do so it is better not to think too much about it. Have a nice folding chair you can use to sit in the polytunnel and a little folding table. They do very comfortable camping chairs nowadays. You can fold them away and pop them into the shed when you don’t use them, just an idea. I was very lucky to get that 20% off discount too on our polytunnel otherwise we couldn’t have afford it. They are such a wonderful space to have in winter, even if they are small ones like ours. Don’t worry about your clothes! They look fine to me. It shows the reality of a garden! Have you seen my clothes? Covered with silicone and paint! And my hair is turning grey but again it is a reality of life as I am nearly 50! I like to think people don’t watch our channels to see what we look like or what we are wearing! It is only for seeing our attempt at gardening ( in my case!!!😂🤣) and sometime cooking what we have grown. I am leaving to the young ones to worry about what they look like! You are doing great! I love watching you exactly as you are! No need to change a thing! 😄👍😘💕🌸❤️

Oh I do love our interactions ❤️❤️ It’s not massive regrets but 14ft wide would have been the icing on the cake for sure. I do have an old school desk and a little stool in the polytunnel and often just sit there. They really are so warm and bright. Even today, -3 outside and it’s 18° in the tunnel. Feels glorious t0 have that warmth against your skin in winter. I’m the wrong side of 50, so I hear you there! No one is watching me for glamorous reasons, that’s for sure 😂😂

I totally agree with you. I’m very tempted to shorten the bed in the north side of the tunnel. I think I’ll see how the space evolves next season first. I do have a little school desk at the end of the centre bed. I could, in theory, make a bench to sit on the end of that north bed for potting up etc, which would then give space for that chair in the centre space I’ll keep you updated. Hope the frost hasn’t gotten to your plants

Built a polytunnel at daughter's request this May and its been well worth it. Our polytunnel is 9'x 5' (two 2' beds and centre path) as that is all the space we can allocate in the garden and also limited by the bits of wood etc i had in the shed to cobble it together with. Tomatoes, lettuces, cabages and cucumbers have been great - had to hand pollinate the cucumbers though. Mesh at the top yes but then when you put the plastic over it hang it from the top and leave the bottom loose then as wind blows you will get some simple ventilation. I initially closed up my mesh with plastic stapled in place and it got really humid inside ( we keep the doors clipped shut because of local vermin (squirrels, foxes and cats).
@TheFarmyardGarden
@TheFarmyardGarden 8 ай бұрын
Sounds like a very worthwhile addition! I’ve been debating putting another set of doors inside, and having the seconds doors just mesh. It’s a shame they can’t make double sliding rails for two sets of doors to cover both bases.

Nice tunnel and good advice go bigger! The ventilation is an area many overlook. I am a drip irrigation snob and have underground water delievery for my raised bed and grow bag garden.

Oh that irrigation set up sounds perfect! We really shouldn’t have overlooked it. We may take back the woodchip and membrane to add water to the tunnel in spring. Ground so wet under there now Thanks for the comment and watching. Happy New Year to you ☺️

@davidt898 7 ай бұрын
Hi Claire, i agree with your comment about using screws rather than nails, as it allows you to make adjustments and changes without wrecking the wood. When your cover eventually wears out, First polytunnels can supply you with additional hoops so you could make your polytunnel longer at that time.
@TheFarmyardGarden
@TheFarmyardGarden 7 ай бұрын
Actually I did think I could maybe extend t)3 tunnel if needed. Sounds a lot of work. Ha! To be honest, it’s more the width than length I regret. I’m sure I’ll be fine with the space when I get going next year and will be settled with the size before I need to change the cover. We said at the time it seemed weird to be using nails. We wondered for there was less chance of the cover snagging than with screws twisting through it. Will definitely use screws if we change the door covering next year. Kicking myself that we didn’t.

Hi Gemma, I really do wish we’d put mesh at the top of the doors. We have no excuse. It did cross my mind at the time and we built it ourselves, so I should have done it. I’m sure I will get it sorted by next year. I wish they did two sets of doors on double runners. That would be cool to have mesh doors inside sliding polythene ones. We could build another set of mesh doors, but they’d have to hinge inwards I think and I didn’t want hinged doors. Soooo many things whizzing about my brain on that one 😅😅

Hi, I bought an 18ft x 30ft polytunnel 11 years ago after a very bad summer when nothing grew. I'm in the process of moving it to new ground because of the red spider mites that have infested it, the old cover was still in good condition so the 5 year guarantee is really not needed. I did have high raised beds to save my back but I am going to plant straight into the ground this time because of the endless summer watering needed for raised beds. I did try two types of irrigation but neither were very good for various reasons. The perforated soak pipe was much wetter at one end than the other and the sprinkler type was very hard to get right if at all. There is no substitute for watering and feeding plants in a bespoke way. Some like their leaves wet and others dry and they differ in the feed they need. Like you say go as big a tunnel as you can, you won't regret it. Put some shading up in the summer or nothing will grow well if we have a hot summer. The sun just seems to scorch the plants even the outside ones last year.
@TheFarmyardGarden
@TheFarmyardGarden 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I do like watering, as it’s time to be up close and check on your plants regularly. Like you say, one size doesn’t fit all with watering, as some need more than others. We have plants for some summer shading if need be, but only the real heat loving plants will be in there. I still wish we’d put up a bigger one. I can imagine your tunnel is far hotter being so much bigger. Here’s to a great season for us all 🌱

Hi, Just found your channel and subscribed! I have a Poly tunnel and have changed the layout several times over the past 4 years! Its a case of live and learn, with nothing ever having to be too permanent ! Some of your thoughts on what you would do again or change , will no doubt come about over the next year or two! My only suggestion is to use more of the vertical space to grow stuff! Feel free to take a look at my poly tunnel vids and see if anything is useful, as the more ideas you see makes making any alterations easier! Keep up the good work , Shaun.

You bring up good points to consider. I have been promised a polytunnel/hothouse/potting shed but need to wait for the new tractor shed to be built as it will be at the end of it. Alas the build keeps getting put off with lamb prices dropping, interest rates rising, summer drought etc. I am hoping things will start in the ne year ready for next winter. Looking forward to seeing the hats. BTW I enjoy watching the natural you. No need for make-up and fancy clothes.
