For the grafting question, I think it depends on what we are trying to achieve with practicing bonsai. If our aim is to create spectacular pieces of art, then yes, graft it with the best possible foliage we can find so that the end result is the best in class. But, by doing that, we do take away what this tree stood for, and it's true essence for hundreds of years, when it was in nature. Somehow I feel like we should try to preserve that as much as we can. I have gone back and forth with what exactly my definition of practicing bonsai is. Personally, at this point in time, I wouldn't graft it. My answer and preference may change at some other point in time but I think there are enough examples of world class Itoigawa. We need to develop and show these native species in their truest form.

For me, grafting is in the same ballpark as 'Phoenix grafting'. Many have argued with me that they aren't similar at all, but I still disagree. A Phoenix graft uses a sapling, attached to deadwood to give the impression of an old tree, right? Normal grafting keeps the original roots I suppose, but what you see is still a lie. No Rocky Mountain juniper has the dense, lush green foliage of a shimpaku. And by grafting' it with that foliage you are trying to pass it off for something it is not. Sure you can get tighter, denser foliage. But what's the point?? To make it look like something it isn't? Just get a different tree... I know grafting is a horticultural technique, and some would probably argue the same about using wire on a tree. I guess I'm just basically saying I'm against grafting in bonsai, for what it's worth 😂👍

If you wanted to preserve a trees true essence then leave it in the mountains. Otherwise you're just complicating a simple hobby. Make bush look like old tree. Stop trying to romanticize everything sheesshh

In my opinion grafting is a bit like cheating. Changing out the foliage on the old trunk. Using the original foliage has my preference.

@@matthewbackstrom2104 Some take the concept of Naturalism to the extreme ... Nature does NOT make bonsai, nothing we do with a plant to turn it into a bonsai would be something that nature would do ... the very activity of bonsai is a series of deceptions to the viewer.

100% keep the native foliage. You have the skill to make it spectacular anyways. I don’t think every juniper needs to have the tightest foliage, The fact that this would hopefully not would in my opinion make it stand out more so, and it has spent its life with its own foliage for hundreds?? Of years and I think you owe it that. just my opinion of course and my will bow down to a better man than I on these matters.👍 Cheers though Bjorn…and thanks you for all your work and sharing it with us.

My 2 cents, graft that spectacular RMJ with the best RMJ foliage you can find and put it in an American pot. Part of my rationale is that when you eventually put it in the US national show, it will have a real chance to win the All American Award, in addition to being a serious contender for other awards.

I love how your garden is growing. I come from the desert Southwest, and tend to agree with Gordon about the grafting, feeling like an "American School" would be a wonderful development in the world of bonsai. That said, it would probably turn out beautiful in your capable hands either way.

For me, I’d keep the native foliage. Graft a better, tighter Scopulorum to it, but keep it native. In my opinion, it keeps the grandeur and wildness of our amazing species. And it smells wonderful of the natural environment it came from.

Great video as always Bjorn. In regards to the grafting, since bonsai is an art - especially in your hands - any type of grafting is certainly most acceptable. That said, from a little bit of a philosophical viewpoint, when possible I tend to prefer keeping the grafting foliage species the same as the trunk/deadwood - as there’s a 'belonging together' kind of feeling. Aesthetically I often enjoy the lighter, feathery, airy contrast of some juniper species against powerful deadwood and live veins. Also I wonder if less dense foliage can add to the impression of age compared compact, vigorous foliage? Whatever you do, it will be a beautiful tree for sure.

for the RMJ that you are considering grafting, if you have the shimpaku variety that Mr. Iyuda (sp.) uses, that would make a wonderful tree!

Go for itoigawa foliage! Personally, I don’t care if the foliage is American or Japanese or Canadian. I just want the tree to be as beautiful as it can be, and if that means grafting itoigawa on it then be it.

I won't graft the huge rocky, why because developing a rocky mountain juniper with its native foliage would be much more appreciated than taking the easy way out and grafting shimpaku. Almost anyone can develop a shimpaku where is the skill in that developing a native species to its maximum potential is where the real skills matter.

Id keep the original foliage on that RMJ, or graft really tight RMJ/ One Seed foliage. For native species to be more used and accepted in bonsai community, we need to cut a slice out for native US species that showcase the wildness and unique species we have to offer here. We can learn to accept that it won’t be as tight as Shimpaku , and that should be accepted as just like coniferous yamadori with inverse taper , it’s just how nature left it.

congratulations, you have a wonderful, functional and practical garden. I am also a bonsai professional in Spain and I know what it costs to maintain a garden as impeccable as you have it. If you will allow me a question, what kind of wood do you use for the shelves? I have a lot of problems with them because they end up rotting and I have to constantly replace them. Thank you

I would try to develop the tree to its full potential without grafting Japanese variety Juniper onto it. The Japanese used species native to Japan to create their art and we should try to develop species native to our locality in the same spirit. Train it into the best old Rocky Mountain Juniper that it can be!

I would graft this tree with some of the newer commercial Rocky Mountain Junipers with striking blue foliage that is very tight growing. Go visit some nurseries and look them over and you will find what I am referring to. There are some growing in my neighborhood that are stunning. There are also some yamadori trees in Castlewood Canyon state park that are very similar.
