Hi, I have a Bsc majoring in environmental science and I’m planning to do medical imaging as a postgrad. This channel has been the most informative when it comes to studying medical imaging and the things that come after graduation. I really want to thank you for this video and I found it helpful. I am a very ‘lost’ student on what I want to do after I graduate.

Your videos have been so informative yet comforting(?) that I instantly subscribed! I’ve been constantly stressed recently due to 2022 course offers coming out and your videos have really reassured me on my decision to do radiography. However I’m worried about numerous things, the medical imaging course at RMIT that I’m enrolled in is apparently not an APHRA accredited program, but I’m not 100% sure what that means and consequently what I would have to do after graduation.. I’m also wondering what you’re thoughts about career/employment opportunities for radiographer in 4 years time? I’ve heard it’s becoming more competitive and I’m inevitable going to worry about the career opportunities for a fresh graduate that would have only internship experience.

Good to see you have done the research! message me on facebook and I can share more there... It is getting more competitive now than ever, because the 'internship' model in Victoria was remodelled this year (2022). No one really knows what is going on tbh....

@@SallyOverShare In one of the ASMIRT Keys to Employment webinars, we had the Department Head of Radiography at one of the largest public hospitals in Victoria as a guest speaker. She said that it was she who fought for paid internships when she was young. Since she has retired, the cynic in me thinks the demise of paid internships is due to the retirement of its original proponent.

@@s0516122 A lot of passionate radiographers have paved their way for us. I feel like at the moment there is a gap - senior radiographers are retiring and the young generation are not 'there' to fight for more. tbh, as much as I want to change things, I do know where to start and other life commitments take over. The good news is, I know several experienced radiographers who are making a change (gradually)! We need our voice to be heard in the government and regulatory body.

Hi Sally! I have found your videos at the perfect time. I’m in Sydney on my working holiday visa and need to get my masters to be able to stay on a student visa and then hopefully PR just like you. I was looking into dietetics or naturopathy but your videos have been so informative I think I will go with my masters in diagnostic radiography at USYD. The other two careers seem to have less job opportunities. I wanted to ask you, how much free time do you have? I am passionate about acting and would like to keep pursuing it on the side but feel sad imaging a life where I’m too busy for it. Can’t wait to hear about more avenues radiographers can take as well. - Sinead xx

I mentioned in another video that we get up to 8 weeks of paid leave a year, so I do take a week off here and there to take a break. TBH, I think you just need to make time if you want to do other side hustles. A KZfaq video takes me 10 hours of work, from scripting (2 hours) to filming (2 hours) to editing (6hours) , but I find time to do it because I enjoy it :) I have friends who also work in a different industry on a part-time basis. Radiography is flexible enough that you can do it part-time. All the very best!

I've always been wondering at the back of my head, how difficult i ist to establish your own private clinic for medical imaging (MRI, Ultrasound etc) All my mates in physiotherapy, medicine, dentistry and optometry are looking to slowly get into establishing private centres but I've always been wondering and have so many questions for medical imaging. I thought you'd know this topic of discussion decently well so here are a few of the many questions I had. In order to establish a clinic can this be done my a radiographer or must there be a radiologist who is in charge of everything? Also, since the area of medical imaging is largely played upon patients being referred from hospitals, medical centres etc, how important and hard is it to build connections with hospitals, medical centres in order to have patients coming in? Lastly, do medical imaging clinics usually handle one type of imaging such as MRI or do they generally have everything from ultrasound to regular X-ray etc. Thanks heaps and sorry for the long read :))
@SallyOverShare
@SallyOverShare 2 жыл бұрын
Radiologists and radiological equipments are probably the biggest expenses. Plus, the radiation regulation can be legally complicated and you may also need to hire a physicist. 1) All radiological examinations must be reported by a radiologists. Some clinics have the examinations reported remotely by overseas radiologists. For CT/MRI contrast scans and some Ultrasound examinations, you must have a radiologist on site. 2) Some radiology clinics have relation with private hospitals and some medical centre so the doctors and surgeons will refer the patients to a specific radiology site. However, the quality of the scan and report turn-over time are crucial. If the radiology clinics don't provide a good services, the doctors will refer the patients to somewhere else. Patients don't always know they can choose any radiology clinic, they always assume they have to go to the one listed on their referrals. 3) It depends on the company budget. Some clinic only has X-ray or Ultrasound (e.g. obstetrics ultrasound clinic). An MRI machine can cost 3-5 million, plus other safety costs. Most rural clinics only provide x-ray/Ultrasound/CT because they are cost-effective. It is not impossible to start a business in radiography, but it is not as straight-forward as other healthcare profession. My husband, who is an osteopath, can practice from home as long as he has an ABN number and a clinical bed. Therefore you cannot compare radiography to dentistry or optometry, since you can even buy and take over an existing business, just on your own. I know several radiography companies owned by radiographers/radiologists, or by someone who is not even in the healthcare industry. All the best!

hii sally! i just loved your videos and the way you are guiding the future radiographers ..like I have somewhere in my mind to be a radiographer but when i see the other position in the same field that is nursing i know both are totally different and as you are also a international student you know that we take loan for our studies when we are thinking to study in a country like Australia soo can you plz tell what should be better in term of job security , pay scale a radiographer or a nurse ...it would really help me :)
@SallyOverShare
@SallyOverShare Жыл бұрын
I think I have talked about nurses or radiographer in another old video. Job security and payscale are similar - nothing is guaranteed and it is getting more competitive. As an international student, you don't get much disadvantage in finding jobs or placements in radiography. However, I'm not sure if it is the same case for nursing international students.

I find the work-life balance in MRI is better than X-ray. No night shift/late shift/super early shift. I do more on-call but I don't get called in as often as I do in X-ray. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi Sally I’m a nurse from HK🇭🇰. I think I am with the same age as u. Maybe I hv mid-age crisis as well. Felt enough with nursing and hope to study smth different but a bit familiar to.🤣 Diagnostic radiography came to my mind. While I was searching information about it, KZfaq brought me to meet u. Is it possible for me to study diagnostic radiography in Australia?
@SallyOverShare
@SallyOverShare 2 жыл бұрын
It is absolutely possible for you to study radiography in Australia, but watch my other video on 'the cost of international student studying in Australia'. It is quite expensive to study the bachelor course as an international student. The salary of a nurse and a radiographer are comparable in Australia. I also think it would be easier for a nurse to land a job comparing to a radiographer. Unless, you become a PR first in Australia, then the university fee for domestic student is much cheaper! Good luck!

Is there any discriminations between you and your local colleagues during the hard time you mentioned in your mri team? This is one of my concern of working in hospital after graduated.
@SallyOverShare
@SallyOverShare 2 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely no discrimination at all in my workplace! The conflict stemmed from negative office culture, and it takes time for staff to warm up with new staff. I came on too head-strong as well. I have only experienced a handful of discrimination from my part-time retail job and radiography jobs, from people of all cultures (including Asians). I'd say I was treated a lot better by patients in a hospital (comparing to a clinic), because patients hold hospital staff on a high regard.

The training doesn't teach the geometric principles behind each projection and most qualified radiographers make an error. I gave up on centring point radiography when I was a second year student at the end of 1978. I presented papers at national conferences on the errors made in geometry. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8CAd8KYsdmZdKs.html Few radiographers minimise dose through accurate collimation. Low dose cervical spine series. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMmme5RisszLhaM.html I was unable to publish papers on the 75% of qualifieds and 95% of students who didn't know what happened when the tube was angled because it was such an insult to the profession to imply such a poor level of understanding existed.
