When Billy Eppler first stepped down as the New York Mets general manager it really came out of left field. Now we understand why, as the MLB is investigating Eppler for misuse of the injured list.
Host Ryan Finkelstein talks about the Mets potential use of the "phantom IL" and what to make of this investigation. Now that we know why Eppler stepped down, how does this impact David Stearns setting up the Mets front office moving forward.

Maybe the investigation of the Mets only became public because Billy Eppler drew attention to it by resigning? Maybe other teams are being investigated, but MLB wasn't trying to make it public - especially while the postseason is still in progress. They never want any other news to come out that might take attention away from the postseason.

Wasn't there speculation that Steve Cohen called the cops on Zack Scott to get him out of being interim GM? maybe he's good at moving people out of his orbit without the finger pointing directly at himself

That's a good point and I wouldn't rule that out. I believe Cohen's hiring of Stearns was a sign that he lost faith in Eppler's expertise and leadership.

I am a bit disturbed at your use of terms like 'ratted' and 'tattled'. How about we, in America, begin playing by the rules? This idea that turning in someone who breaks the rules is bad. It's something we ought to grow out of by 4th or 5th grade. Based on the numbers, the Houston Astros have managed to follow the rules of using the IL, and unlike the Mets, THEY are in the playoffs. I find it shameful and disgusting that we seem to view 'beating the rules' as a routine part of competition. You should try endorsing the idea of playing by the rules. As far as who turned Eppler in, I applaud them, and my guesses are ... 1. Pete Alonso 2. Francisco Lindor They have both shown the highest degree of loyalty to Buck Showalter. Think about it ... Eppler, Showalter, Vogelbach story comes out MLB is investigating Eppler Alonso hire Boras Alonso to Cubs story crops up.

There wouldn't be just 2 political parties and Wall Street and the banks would be honest if America "played by the rules." I'm more for changing the rules based on needs and practicality instead of back-breaking though. Too many people want rules, rules, and more rules, but it's regular people that end up being held to follow all these rules except the powerful. People are control-freak psychopaths and can think of nothing else.

I think when it's something minor then it's OK to shame someone by saying "snitched, tattled, or ratted." But what constitutes something being "minor" is up to interpretation and people in America love to exaggerate like their lovely mass media.

It was so obvious that this was happening. Very convenient way to get your old guys like Scherzer extra time off after an outing. The timing of some of these supposed injuries was incredible since it allowed certain hyped up players to be called up.

How could you know it wasn't abused? We don't even know what they are investigating 100%. It was good enough for Eppler to resign, which would lead you to believe that at some point the Mets may face sanctions. When Coppolella the general manager of the Braves got in trouble we were told everyone was doing that but it took it to the extreme.

Isn't that what The Mets did with a Vogelbach "Vacation"? I believe the Phatom IL is used by all others too. This IL use probably stemmed from COVID rules of the past 2.5 years. Somebody tipped off MLB....could it be Max S.? He was shocked by his trade - where is Max with Texas, Arm troubles again. It seems now the trade was a wise one! Same with Verlander. He is pitching well, but he iwll be 41 next year. I hope the New GM learns NOT signing these old Timers for 4 years!. I'm squeamish about getting Soto who wants a BIg Contract (but he is younger than I realized at 24). Get Aronado for 3rd Base - Keep Pete happy, sign at least two Starters (Get Bassit back), need for at least 3 or 3 Relievers. Hopefully Sugar comes back strong !! Otto is OK, but getting old.

Max wasn't surprised at his trade, he was surprised at a different trade and then asked what the plan was going forward. He was, apparently told that they didn't fully plan to compete, so he let himself be traded. Also there's no way the Mets are getting Bassit or Arenado unless they want to break down their farm system.

@@JoelC724 the same way we do - rumors. He led Ohtani to the frozen land known as Anaheim. He has also brought us a star in Senga. With huge rumors circulating that the Mets are in on Yamamoto and, possibly, other Asian top arms this puts a wrench in the communication process we have with overseas players (in Asia, not other parts of the world). I understand he isn't a phenomenal scout but proper etiquette and a show for the love of a culture goes a long way.

I think people around baseball are realizing that because of Cohen rules are going be changed as to not affect the game as much. I think we will see a change in how much money a team can pay on a contract when trading a player; that's a unfair advantage. What Cohen and Mets are paying in 2024 for traded players is going be more payroll than some teams.
@luisdiego22002
@luisdiego22002 10 ай бұрын
@@benjaminwatlers1848 Not saying I disagree or that it may or may not be the case but, what I am saying is that it’s not the best of approaches. If the MLB, players or other teams feel there is an unfair advantage maybe they should address the problem rationally and legally in a direct and more transparent fashion instead of playing so many of these feeble games.
