This is the exact same reason we have "hit me baby one more time." Max Martin thought he was saying the equivalent of "hit me up". And, in fact, TLC passed on the song specifically due to the connotation of "hit me".

funny thing tho, in the few vocal lessons I took, I was taught to sing the 'e' vowel as an 'ae' because it opens up your throat and resonates better. So 'may' instead of 'me' is technically the way to sing it at least according to my teacher haha

That would be more of a (using IPA here for context) mid-open "E" vowel like the word "set" rather than the closed "i" like the word me. The close "i" vowel still comes out as e sounding (like me, tree, bee, sea etc). Notes - the "E" I wrote looks like a capital cursive E, but I can't type that via the app. Context - IPA stands for International Phonetic Alphabet and it's used, mind you the more technical-classical vocal training, and helps a lot for pronunciation, especially with different languages when singing. Cheryl Porter uses them in her popular vocal warm-up videos/challenges all the time.

I was told by an opera singer that many songs pronounce ‘me’ more like ‘may’ as it naturally comes out a bit lower and, therefore, is easier to sing. As soon as you know this, you’ll start to hear it being used everywhere

I've heard something similar. The long "e" vowel sound tends to be more nasal and harsher sounding than the "ay" vowel sound so singers drift more towards "ay" instead of "eeee" especially for longer held notes.

Not that it comes out a bit lower, but rather that the “ay” sound creates a lot more space in your mouth that the “ee” sound, so it’s easier to sing on an “ay” vowel than an “ee” vowel.

Britney says “may” in a lot of her songs on the Oops I Did It Again album, most notably in What U See (Is What U Get) and Don’t Go Knockin’ On My Door. It was Max Martin’s signature. What people don’t get is that it gives the song a little R&B feel to it. Mariah Carey is the most influential R&B singing artist and she does this all the time. I've heard JT say in several other interviews that Max Martin gave him the note to bring out his southern roots/twang for that line - and that's why Justin pronounced it that way. I'm surprised he didn't say this here.
