From the 1975 Broadway musical 'Chicago'
Chicago is an American musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. Set in Chicago in the jazz age, the musical is based on a 1926 play of the same title by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, about actual criminals and the crimes on which she reported. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the "celebrity criminal".
The original Broadway production opened in 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre[1] and ran for 936 performances, until 1977. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. It debuted in the West End in 1979, where it ran for 600 performances. Chicago was revived on Broadway in 1996, and a year later in the West End.
The 1996 Broadway production holds the record as the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It is the second longest-running show to ever run on Broadway, behind only The Phantom of the Opera. Chicago surpassed Cats on November 23, 2014, when it played its 7,486th performance.[2] The West End revival became the longest-running American musical in West End history. Chicago has been staged in numerous productions around the world, and has toured extensively in the United States and United Kingdom. The 2002 film version of the musical won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Watch how even when she unbuttons her jacket Bebe incorporates it into her dance. Or how she flips it to expose her hip to the beat. She’s phenomenal.

I got to see her do CHICAGO in NYC. She was more than amazing! Ann Reinking had left by that time, and Marilou Henner was Roxie. When Bebe did “I Can’t Do It Alone” she did so many physical moves as she sang. When she finished we all went nuts with applause and cheering. When we finally quieted, and Bebe caught her breath Marilu, smiling, said,”I’m not really sure. Could I see that last part again?” Obviously the band knew where to start, and Bebe picked it up on the second part of the act and did all that AGAIN! Every move was perfect, and she belted it out just exactly as she had done the first time. She was more than I ever could have imagined. I totally, absolutely love her!

Major talent! I’m not hugely fond of her voice, but her dancing is….superb! Her body is so in sync w the music and every little move is impeccably timed, seems very natural to her !

What’s even more amazing… the button moment is part of the Fosse choreography. They’re supposed to do it at the same time (4:37). Notice how Karen looks down and smiles at 4:47? I love how Ms. Neuwirth’s playing the character Velma… the seasoned professional of the Velma-Roxie duo… and that is reflected in the accuracy and cleanliness of all her movements. Everything is super precise and on the beat… very “professional Fosse”… Whereas Ms. Ziemba is playing Roxie… a novice to the stage but has a lot of heart and passion “the name on everybody’s lips”. Her movements are more fluid and free, less precise. I cannot find the original documentary with the Making of Chicago with Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking where they talk about all this… but I’m sure it’s on the Interwebs somewheres… I know there’s the making of with the London cast of Ute Lemper and Ruthie Henshall, but I don’t remember if they get into the specifics of the characters’ styles of movement the way they didn’t in the Broadway one. 🤓 I’ll see myself out.

Bebe is a consummate perfectionist and Fosse would have expected nothing less. Reinking, having studied under Fosse would have taught all the tight moves. I've met Bebe and she's terrific.

I love musical theater and I love Bob Fosse. I have taught dance for many many years. Bob’s movements are so small and precise that having the two women dance close to each other, exposes their lack of symmetry, especially through the legs. Just my opinion. I think one performer, Bebe, would’ve been my choice to do this solo.

Karen Ziemba does an okay job with Fosse, far from great or exciting, but she tries. You really get a sense of this when she is next to Bebe, who is a Fosse dancer that has worked with both Bob and Gwen.

I am not on anything, simply my opinion. I also come from an era being 56 years of age, that allowed me to see Broadway shows before the decimation of the Theatre community by aids and the inroads of Weber's horrible mega musicals from casts on down. I saw the original Joseph (Loved both Bill and Laurie, may she rest in peace.) I also believe that Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita are of a much high calibre than when Tim Rice left Sir Andrew. But Back to Ms. Ziemba, I think she does an okay job of this. Fosse stuff was very difficult when Bob was alive and ten times harder with him gone. There are people who were amazing Fosse performers, but in trying to pass along their knowledge (May Anne rest in peace as well), things got lost in translation.
