Robin Hilton | July 5, 2017 - Chance The Rapper knew he wanted to try a different approach for his Tiny Desk performance, so he decided to do something he said he hadn't done in a long time. He wrote a poem. More specifically, he wrote a poem in the short time it took him to ride from his hotel in Washington, D.C. to the NPR Music offices. Calling it "The Other Side," Chance debuted it in the middle of his remarkable set, reading from his notes written out in black marker on sheets of typing paper.
"I still have all the keys that are of no use to me," he began. "They used to, though. On the other side was a mansion on a hill, complete with L.A. pools and fireplaces and a rim made specifically for people that lie about being six feet to dunk on."
Chance didn't get much further before he was interrupted by one of the hazards of performing in an actual, working office: a building-wide page for someone to call the mailroom. But Chance rolled with it, cracking a quick joke before starting over again.
The night before arriving for his Tiny Desk set, Chance performed for more than 23,000 people at Jiffy Lube Live, an outdoor theater in Bristow, VA. The sold out arena and amphitheater shows of his current tour offer a stark contrast to the first time I saw Chance in concert back in 2013. Then, he was a 19-year old upstart rapping and singing for a handful of people at a tiny club in Austin, Texas. A lot has changed since then, and quickly. Chance's most recent mix tape, Coloring Book, was widely ranked among the best albums of 2016 (some called it a masterpiece) and featured collaborations with a cast of hip-hop luminaries, from Kanye West to Lil Wayne and T-Pain.
Chance's poem "The Other Side" was sandwiched between an opening version of "Juke Jam" from Coloring Book and another special gift just for his Tiny Desk appearance, a moving cover of Stevie Wonder's 1974 song "They Won't Go When I Go."
Coloring Book is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.c...
Spotify: play.spotify.c...

I think this was really cool. This place is not for crowd pleasing, it's a place where the artists can do whatever is in their hearts, without feeling the pressure to always play this song or that song. I wish more artists would take that road. It's a brave and honest one.

I met chance when I was his artist liaison in New Zealand's new year festival rhythm and vines.. I can vouch for how he's one of the most down to earth guys I've ever met! He asked me how old I was and what I was upto with life. I said "19 and still trying to find my bearings" he goes "oh wow thought you were older, but anyway guess what I was doing at 19? Just smoking joints everyday and going to church a bit on sundays. I am 23 years old now (24now) and look where I am, crazy right.. goes to show you can do anything man, no cliche" I will forever remember this chat.

As a person who plays all the backing instruments for vocalists (drums, keyboard, guitar, bass) and sings, the idea of standing in front of a band without an instrument is absolutely crazy to me. So much respect to people like Chance who can just casually do it. I don’t think people really appreciate how much talent that takes.

The Other Side by Chance The Rapper I still have keys that are of no use to me, They used to though. On the other side was a mansion on a hill, Complete with LA pools and fireplaces, And a rim made specifically for people who lie about being six feet to dunk on, Where a piano was for decoration and an old record player was actually for the hoes, I was never awakened by the twisting of a door knob, Benzo’s kissed me goodnight, The bars finally stopped working, They used to though. On the other side was a presidential suite, Complete with living rooms and empty beds and a rainfall showered fixture and the freedom to smoke big dope, And smoking fees also, And the possibility of making a beautiful girl I just met, map out in her mind just how many times her apartment could fit in this room, If I could just get in. The card stopped working, They used to though. On the other side was a family, Complete with carpet stains and big loves and “its your turn’s" and toys all over the place (I almost fell and broke my fucking neck), And responsibility and refrigerator magnets, And days on the couch and nights on the couch, And lines drawn in the sand and comebacks that cross the line, And a horn line from my favourite make-up song plays, And just like that, we've rehabbed a home, DeBarge stopped working. I still have all the keys that are of no use to me They used to work though.

this could be wrong but what i get from it is that the keys are different stages of his life, as in what he wanted to attain at the time or certain memories he had at the time. those aspirations from before hold no use to him now but he holds onto them because it made him who he is. i think when he says the keys stop working, it means its no longer what he wants. i think it's about finding what makes him happy

i think, on another note, it also refers to the potential futures and dreams we have had at some point in our life. the means to reach those futures and dreams are still within us, but unusable because we have already chosen a path that makes reaching out for those possibilities impossible. The potential to be those things is still there though, but they USED to work and now not anymore. "We still have all the keys that are of no use to us anymore. But they used to work, though." +Andy4Prez explanation is also spot on. it really depends on how the poem made you feel :)
