March 17, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • I could walk by Peter Frampton on the street and not recognize him. His long blond hair, which shines like a halo on his album Frampton Comes Alive! may be gone, but as soon as he sat behind the Tiny Desk and began singing, 1976 came rushing back. I worked in a record store the year Frampton Comes Alive! came out, and it was one of those records that seemed to have universal appeal. We sold a ton of copies of that double live album and I can still remember the label and number (A&M 3703) from having written it on countless sales tickets.
Forty years later, on the new album Acoustic Classics, Peter Frampton has taken those electric guitar songs, some linked forever to that unmistakable talk box effect, and stripped them down to their essence, just a few acoustic guitars and his voice. At the Tiny Desk, played by Peter and guitarist Gordon Kennedy, these songs still thrill. We had a lot of coworkers and friends come watch Frampton come alive again. It was electrifying to hear a room full of people spontaneously burst out singing on the chorus of "Baby, I Love Your Way" especially when many of those singing weren't alive when that song came out.
Songwriters could spend their lives hoping to write a song that connects for the ages, but Peter Frampton told the NPR crowd that two of his biggest hits came to him on a beach on the same day. The notion that one day the magic is there and the next it's gone could haunt a songwriter, but not Peter Frampton. On this day I saw one of the happiest musicians walk into our building, a man filled with joy, eager to share his tunes he's sung over and over for much of his adult life, with a fresh attitude. It was enchanting.
Acoustic Classics is available now:

He looks and sounds great! I luv 🎶acoustic🎶 Petey Pie. Eff the R&RHOF, we know who we've luved for 50+ years. The hair is still there, you just have to look a bit harder to see it. I'm 75 in May, very few lines on my face, which my friends think is a bit freaky since I don't botox or even moisturize. I think it's from making an effort every day to be a kind and decent person. Listening to great music also helps us maintain a youthful vibe. 😅 🎶💙🎶

Yes, I always think that when you see a musician singing a song with as much strength and passion as when it was originally recorded decades ago. I was just watching Fleetwood Mac performing "the chain" and wondered how many thousands of times they've performed it, yet it still sounded fresh. That's the sign of good songwriting and talented people performing the song.

He knew his illness would eventually affect is playing. He was not going to go out and tour once he no longer met his own playing standard. He also laid down a lot of music tracks while he still played well. He said in an interview once that he could do the studio work of finishing those in later years even if he could no longer play.

Harry you are a lucky guy to have a dad who exposed you to a great musician like PF. I was the same age as you are now when FCA was released. At that time 75-76 I was a fan of the Beatles, the Stones, Eric Clapton, the Grateful dead and Led Zeppelin. My folks listened to Sinatra, Tony Bennett and big band stuff and Broadway LPs . Tragically, there were " music wars" in our apartment in the Bronx all the time. I'm sure there were often times when I was the instigator of the conflict. When I became a middle-aged hobbyist-guitarist and my palette broadened I began to also appreciate a lot of the stuff mY folks did. Plus I added miles Davis, john Coltrane Charlie parker and the great western classical composers to my list of faves. So the moral of the story young man is try to be as broadminded and tolerant in all areas of your life as you can. You risk missing out on so much in life if you don't P.S. it's never to late to start learning how to play a musical instrument And isn't KZfaq a great invention for those of us who LOVE music?!

I saw Frampton in the early 90s and again about 8 or 9 years ago. He still sounds like he did on Frampton Comes Alive. Same voice, same amazing playing. The guy is incredible. And he plays with so much enthusiasm and joy, it really makes him a pleasure to watch.

Tiny Desk is one of the coolest things in music. It brings the artist AND the fans closer than they could ever expect to be, in a loose comfortable setting that both can enjoy. Artists from every genre have seemed to get the same vibe from Tiny Desk.

I remember how significant Frampton Comes Alive played in my childhood; I was a 13 year old boy, working long days at my father's grocery store, with only a transistor radio with my earphone as my only entertainment. They would play tracks from the album every hour on the hour, non stop Frampton, sometimes twice an hour. When the store closed each night and my parents closed up and counted the day's accounts, I would listen to the radio, strolling down the dark aisles of canned foods and dream of happier days. Who would have guessed how much I missed those carefree days and that great music? Thank you Peter for bringing some glimmer of happiness in a young boy's life. You still sound as FANTASTIC as you did in 1976.

1977 ... high school years and the 23 yr. old cool girl who lived at my condos, had just bought a brand new T-Top Trans Am ... full Smoky & The Bandit model, and she had "Frampton Comes Alive!" in the 8-Track player. I had just rec'd my license ... 16 ... nice night and she throws me the keys and says ... "Do you know Peter Frampton's music?" .... "Sure I do!" trying to appear cool ... though it wasn't true. "Take it for a drive down River Road ... and listen to the whole album!" she said, ... that drive, changed my life! Sure burned a white hot memory into my brain that's for sure! And Frampton's music 44 years later ... is just as moving ... Timeless ...
