NS 6920 (SD60E) Veterans Unit on her first revenue

Thanks first to all our Veterans - and second to Norfolk Southern for this Unit!
Knowing the NS 6920 came into Enola Yard under the cover of darkness on Thursday evening, my day started a little earlier Friday, arriving at Enola just before 6:30am. NS 37Q was just starting to put the train together with a 7 unit Consist. NS 8749 (on the point) - 8385 - 9150 - 8077 - 1067 (Reading Heritage Unit) - 6920 & 6912.
After the train was together and 37Q in pulling from the Yard up to CP 111L, a small voice comes over the scanner "37Q - you need to shove back into the yard. They want that "painted unit" on the point"!
So about 3 hours later, 37Q is leaving the Yard with: NS 6920 (Veterans Unit on the point) - 6912 - 8749 - 8385 - 9150 - 8077 - 1067 (Reading Heritage Unit). Videoed at the Rt 39 overpass (where it was plenty windy), and then on the NS Lurgan Branch at MP: LG 1 on the Ex-Reading RR Bridge, LG 15.5 (Leidigh Dr), LG 36 (Lees Cross Roads) and just west of Shippensburg at HW 43.

Congrats on a great catch! Superb vid! Win Moorman, CEO of NS, was voted "RAILROAD MAN OF THE YEAR" for 2011. Last year he has purchased AC power from GE and EMD and here in the Boston -North area several rail fans have caught shiny new ACes with coal drags to Bow, N.H. and with mixed manifests. NS has also purchased the 3,600 h.p. CAT PR43c units. Haven't seen one up here yet but hope to. Hey Mr. Moorman, thanks for remembering our veterans!

What a catch! Not only did you get the new NS Veterans unit, but you also got the Reading Lines Heritage unit (NS 1067) at the rear of the locomotive consist! I love trains, and getting two special units in one single consist would definitely make a railfan's day!

I second that motion! EMD had a great poker hand, especially when a saw earlier this year at nighttime an all EMD "MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" consist with an ACe "hat trick" leading and a quad SD-40-s and GP-40-2 trailer, with a monstrous mixed manifest and combined coal drag headed up tp Bow, N.H. and beyond. YIKES!

The locomotive was painted at NS's Juniata Shops, according to NS's video re: painting 6920 into this scheme.

Operating on ex-Reading and Western Maryland trackage that day by the looks of it. Just about anything looks good on the Susqehanna River bridge!

Actually UP had two veteran's units at one point, but they retired them a long time ago. Their road numbers were UP #3300 and UP #3593, both of them were SD40-2's. UP 3300 was known as the "United Way" unit, while UP 3593 was known as the "Desert Storm" unit. So UP did have a couple, although I don't recall BNSF ever having any.

They should have put the Reading Heritage unit behind their Veterans unit. Would have made for better move for the NS. Great video, though. Thank you for sharing it. Now if only the UP and the BNSF would do the same.

Thanks for posting as I live in Cali and will never see this beauty in person Does anyone kno why NS opted to do this scheme on the SD60E rebuild and not a new SD70ACe? I really like it as is, but an ACe in that scheme ????? Talk about a kick ass locomotive. Anyone out there agree? Thanks.

I wish they treated the reservist as good as they make it look. We have reservist starving because they're having to mark off for drill and losing there claims because of it. We have reservist not qualifying for bonus's because of the time they give to their country. We're not asking for a lot just for our service to not count against us.
