He was actually saying hello. The Conductor has a horn button on his side of the cab in certain locomotives, which allows the engineer to wave or point. We've had it happen here in Duluth Ga with the exact same unit leading NS 237. Conductor hit the horn to allow the engineer, our friend, to point at us with both hands as they flew by.

Norfolk Southern Fan 9806 /Truck Spotting Fan if it were stuck open you would’ve seen the conductor walk back to the engine compartment and shut off the air valve to the horn before it would have stopped, then he would have to go to the second engine back and use it’s horn for the rest of the trip

On the very vast majority of engines for NS, the conductor does not have a horn button. Early 8000's are the only ones. SD70M's did too.

Railfan1981 I think it's a solenoid valve and some times it gets stuck open. That's my guess anyway.

the horn didn't get stuck. PTC will blow the horn for crossings unless the engineer takes over. thats what happened here
